(Please see page 3 for your invitation) To give you a taster the improvements which have been achieved, on the left hand side you can see the changes that have been made to the former function room, which has been transformed a state-of-the-art training room and three brand new one-to-one therapy rooms! Coffee Morning On Friday 5th July Washington Mind opened its doors for the first time to launch the completion of Phase 1 to the general public by holding a coffee morning! Staff, volunteers, service users and the local community were welcomed into the building to take a look at the work so far, have a look at what’s to come and have a coffee and a chat. There was lots of interest from people regarding hiring 1 rooms for activities so watch this space for further information! Change For Life Events 12th – 16th August 2013 Washington Mind attended the Change 4 Life free family fun events from the 12th to 16th of August. The events, which were held across Sunderland, Washington and the Coalfields, were very well attended by all generations. There was a great atmosphere and everyone who attended seemed to be having fun with their families. We were there giving out messages about sun safety, good mood food and men’s health. Our selection of freebies included free sun cream and free good mood food including bananas, brazil nuts and dark chocolate. The free sun cream was a hit with the younger generation who were keen to look after their skin in the scorching weather and were encouraging their parent’s to take on board our positive messages! ‘Ha’way man’ and ‘Alreet man’ came along with us and everyone who made a pledge to support men’s health was entered into our prize draw to win a £50 shopping voucher. I hope the winner has taken on board our messages and has good mood food on their shopping list! Men’s Health Project Update We have been out and about across July and August continuing to raise awareness of men’s health. It has been a mixture of speaking at meetings, group work and community events. During Change4Life week we collected pledges from people across the city about what they were going to do to become, or help a man become, ‘Alreet Man’. Some of the pledges included “Take some cancer info for my husband to read”, “Walk everyday and visit my doctor for a health check”, “longer walks with the dog” and “encourage him to be more active e.g. going for walks with the pram”. 2 What would your pledge be? Over the past couple of weeks Kathy has been very busy out and about to promote the A LIFE Worth Living Suicide Prevention Programme, visiting organisations such as ASDA, Berghaus and Cineworld! A number of employers across Sunderland and South Tyneside are interested in raising their workforces level of mental health awareness. My visit to Berghaus was a taster session for staff and managers that briefly touched upon mental health awareness but with a focus upon identifying their possible training needs and increasing awareness of the ALWL suicide prevention training and campaign. Presentation at Berghaus Cineworld are showing their support for the ALWL campaign in a number of ways. Their managers, supervisors and team members signed pledges that highlight how they will aim to prevent suicides. For some this is to attend the ALWL training for others it was a simple message of listening to their friends when they are feeling low. I spoke to at least 50 young people whilst I was there. Cineworld are helping me to identify possible funding/donations to help the campaign and the training continue. Cineworld staff pledge their support! ASDA kindly offered us the space in the Galleries to continue with the ALWL pledge campaign. Yet again our aim was to reach the public and let them know that talking about suicide and suicidal thoughts is a coping strategy…..life does give us a lot of difficult and painful issues to deal with….things can and do change. The community focused 4 approach of A LIFE Worth Living will help Can you spot the LIFE cards? tackle a very taboo subject whilst saving lives. Race For Life Pretty Muddy 2013 On Sunday 8th September some of Washington Mind’s staff joined the thousands of women at the Herrington Country Park to participate in the Race For Life 5K Pretty Muddy event! The staff got themselves very muddy and all to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Staff also tested the stress levels of the attendees by using bio-dots - thankfully, most results indicated low levels of stress at that moment! Throughout the day staff also promoted Washington Mind services and introduced 5 people to Ha’Way Man and Areet Man, both of which generated lots of interest and discussion amongst the general public. Sunderland Wellbeing & Men’s Health Network Party in the Park This year the Sunderland Wellbeing and Men’s Health Networks teamed up for their summer event which took place in Mowbray Park and was themed around ‘Connect’ – one of our 5-a-day for Health and Happiness. Over 200 people came to the Washington Mind gazebo and took information home with them, focused on men’s Health, 5-a-day for Health and Happiness, sun awareness and the brand new Sunderland Wellbeing Network info leaflet. Freebies were also given to attendees at the event – A BIG THANK YOU to Easington Lane Community Access Point who kindly donated some sun cream and to Sainsburys Silksworth for a supply of water and boxes of raisins which were enjoyed by younger visitors to the gazebo! Around 20 people took advantage of the guided walk of the park with one gentleman telling us “I’ve seen parts of the park today that I didn’t know existed!” Reel Therapy – it’s back!
