Appendix to Chapter 7: DNSs Listed in Réflexions sur la puissance motrice du feu In square parentheses we added explanations regarding the statement A correspond- ing to statement ¬¬A so that it is easier to notice the difference in the meanings of the two sentences. Due to epistemological investigation on ¬¬A, we decided to use the original French version (Carnot 1978). Moreover, in brackets we attribute to each sentence (excluding the first two which do not have scientific relevance) its theoretical role played within scientific theory: PR, GP, TP, MP, *,OPaspresented in Chapter 7. Language Planning and Textbooks in French Primary Education During the Third Republic
Rewriting the Nation: Language Planning and Textbooks in French Primary Education During the Third Republic By Celine L Maillard A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2019 Reading Committee: Douglas P Collins, Chair Maya A Smith Susan Gaylard Ana Fernandez Dobao Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of French and Italian Studies College of Arts and Sciences ©Copyright 2019 Céline L Maillard University of Washington Abstract Rewriting the Nation: Language Planning and Textbooks in French Primary Education During the Third Republic Celine L Maillard Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Douglas P Collins Department of French and Italian Studies This research investigates the rewriting of the nation in France during the Third Republic and the role played by primary schools in the process of identity formation. Le Tour de la France par deux enfants, a textbook written in 1877 by Augustine Fouillée, is our entry point to illustrate the strategies used in manufacturing French identity. We also analyze other texts: political speeches from the revolutionary era and from the Third Republic, as well as testimonies from both students and teachers written during the twentieth century. Bringing together close readings and research from various fields – history, linguistics, sociology, and philosophy – we use an interdisciplinary approach to shed light on language and national identity formation. Our findings underscore the connections between French primary education and national identity. Our analysis also contends that national identity in France during the Third Republic was an artificial construction and demonstrates how otherness was put in the service of populism. -

An examination of the early Saint-Simonian journal, Le Producteur, however, reveals the articulation of an appeal to contemporary men of letters. A survey of the life and career of Hippolyte Carnot, a prominent Saint-Simonian man of letters, confirms and illustrates the nature of this appeal as it developed alongside Saint-Simonian ideology. Central to this appeal was the Saint-Simonians‘ attributing to the ―artist‖ the role of moral educator. -

La Lorraine Artiste: Nature, Industry, and the Nation in the Work of Émile Gallé and the École De Nancy
La Lorraine Artiste: Nature, Industry, and the Nation in the Work of Émile Gallé and the École de Nancy By Jessica Marie Dandona A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History of Art in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby, Chair Professor Anne Wagner Professor Andrew Shanken Spring 2010 Copyright © 2010 by Jessica Marie Dandona All rights reserved Abstract La Lorraine Artiste: Nature, Industry, and the Nation in the Work of Émile Gallé and the École de Nancy by Jessica Marie Dandona Doctor of Philosophy in History of Art University of California, Berkeley Professor Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby, Chair My dissertation explores the intersection of art and politics in the career of 19th-century French designer Émile Gallé. It is commonly recognized that in fin-de-siècle France, works such as commemorative statues and large-scale history paintings played a central role in the creation of a national mythology. What has been overlooked, however, is the vital role that 19th-century arts reformers attributed to material culture in the process of forming national subjects. By educating the public’s taste and promoting Republican values, many believed that the decorative arts could serve as a powerful tool with which to forge the bonds of nationhood. Gallé’s works in glass and wood are the product of the artist’s lifelong struggle to conceptualize just such a public role for his art. By studying decorative art objects and contemporary art criticism, then, I examine the ways in which Gallé’s works actively participated in contemporary efforts to define a unified national identity and a modern artistic style for France. -

H-France Review Volume 7 (2007) Page 220 H-France Review Vol. 7 (May 2007), No. 55 Nicolas Mariot, Bains de foule: Les voyages présidentiels en province, 1888-2002. Paris: Éditions Belin, 2006. 352 pp. Figures, notes and index. €24.00 (pb). ISSN 1270-914-X, ISBN 2-7011-4452-3. Review by Paul Smith, University of Nottingham. Presidential visits to provinces seem so much part of French political practice that one almost forgets that they had a beginning. It was Sadi Carnot, who became the fourth president of the Third Republic in 1888, who instituted the practice when he replaced the discredited Jules Grévy and the regime was suffering from attacks from Radicals, monarchists, and Boulangists. Only a cynic would suggest that Carnot, victim of an assassin’s knife during an official visit to Lyon in 1894, might have been better advised to stay at home: bad things happen, despite the best risk assessment. And despite Carnot’s demise, his successors under three different republics have carried on the tradition. For his study, Mariot has opted not to analyse presidential visits by means of a chronological narrative, choosing instead to tackle a range of themes that recur (or not) across a detailed study of tours within the prescribed timeframe. This means, of course, that he is not always comparing like with like and the reader might be permitted to ask if a tour by Carnot in 1890, Doumergue in 1927 or Coty in 1954, can really be compared to de Gaulle in 1965, or Mitterrand in 1982? Mariot insists they can, or rather does not confront the argument very much, because his interest is in laying bare the organisation, execution, and the reporting of the visit from anthropological, ethnographic, and sociological perspectives. -
