When given a microphone, he delivered a round of thankyous in such a polished manner that if he had palace minders, they would have been pleased. But after a demanding performance and at least another two hours of meetingand greeting, the South Dakotaborn star was hungry. "I need a milkshake," he said quietly. Guests at the restaurant Lincoln, where the private dinner for Mr. Hallberg was held. Will Ragozzino/BFA Mr. Hallberg became an international sensation in 2011 when he joined the Bolshoi, one of the world's bestknown ballet companies. He is now based primarily in Moscow and trains with the Bolshoi, but he remains one of the headlining dancers with New York's American Ballet Theatre, where he is a principal. "David embodies this crosscultural bridge," said Maria Baibakova, who served as hostess at the dinner, with event cochairs, for Lincoln Center Global. Ms. Baibakova's brief remarks began with a moment of silence for the lives lost in the Malaysia Airlines crash in Ukraine. Will Ragozzino/BFA Jed Bernstein, who took over as president of Lincoln Center in January, followed up on those stirring words by pointing out that some 75,000 people over the next few weeks would have access to that healing power through Lincoln Center Festival's performances. Among those who took in the Bolshoi, followed by dinner at Lincoln were the art dealer Jeffrey Deitch, curator Neville Wakefield, Teen Vogue editor Amy Astley and the fashion designers Prabal Gurung, Derek Lam and Rosie Assoulin. Ensconced in a big booth was Colleen Hallberg, Mr. Hallberg's mother. In remarks to the guests, Mr. Hallberg pointed her out and thanked his parents for letting "this AllAmerican boy" take a chance on ballet. You sleep,' " she said. Mr. Hallberg lives just a few minutes away from the theater, he said, and has found working with the Bolshoi transformative for his dancing. His watchful mother agreed: "Tonight, I watched his upper body expand," she said.
