When given a microphone, he delivered a round of thank­yous in such a polished manner that if he had palace minders, they would have been pleased. But after a demanding performance and at least another two hours of meeting­and­ greeting, the South Dakota­born star was hungry. "I need a milkshake," he said quietly. Guests at the restaurant Lincoln, where the private dinner for Mr. Hallberg was held. Will Ragozzino/BFA Mr. Hallberg became an international sensation in 2011 when he joined the Bolshoi, one of the world's best­known ballet companies. He is now based primarily in Moscow and trains with the Bolshoi, but he remains one of the headlining dancers with New York's American Ballet Theatre, where he is a principal. "David embodies this cross­cultural bridge," said Maria Baibakova, who served as hostess at the dinner, with event co­chairs, for Lincoln Center Global. Ms. Baibakova's brief remarks began with a moment of silence for the lives lost in the Malaysia Airlines crash in Ukraine. Will Ragozzino/BFA Jed Bernstein, who took over as president of Lincoln Center in January, followed up on those stirring words by pointing out that some 75,000 people over the next few weeks would have access to that healing power through Lincoln Center Festival's performances. Among those who took in the Bolshoi, followed by dinner at Lincoln were the art dealer Jeffrey Deitch, curator Neville Wakefield, Teen Vogue editor Amy Astley and the fashion designers Prabal Gurung, Derek Lam and Rosie Assoulin. Ensconced in a big booth was Colleen Hallberg, Mr. Hallberg's mother. In remarks to the guests, Mr. Hallberg pointed her out and thanked his parents for letting "this All­American boy" take a chance on ballet. You sleep,' " she said. Mr. Hallberg lives just a few minutes away from the theater, he said, and has found working with the Bolshoi transformative for his dancing. His watchful mother agreed: "Tonight, I watched his upper body expand," she said.     CHOREOGRAPHERS FOR 2019 ABT INCUBATOR SELECTED CLAIRE DAVISON, ZHONG-JING FANG, SUNG WOO HAN, GABRIELLE LAMB AND LAURA O’MALLEY TO CREATE NEW WORK FOR CHOREOGRAPHIC PROGRAM Choreographers Gabrielle Lamb and Laura O’Malley, along with American Ballet Theatre dancers Claire Davison, Zhong-Jing Fang and Sung Woo Han, have been selected to create work for the 2019 ABT Incubator, a two-week choreographic workshop providing a focused lab to inspire new choreographic voices and generate ideas for the creation of new work. Directed by ABT Principal Dancer David Hallberg, ABT Incubator will be held October 29–November 9, 2019 at ABT’s New York studios. ABT Incubator choreographers were chosen through an audition process with selections made by a panel including Hallberg, ABT Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie, Danspace Executive Director Judy Hussie-Taylor and choreographer Jessica Lang. Selected choreographers are provided studio space and a stipend to create new work on ABT dancers. Lang will serve as a program mentor, offering composition exercises and professional management advice for ABT Incubator participants. In addition, ABT Incubator provides participating dancers and choreographers access to museum and gallery tours, as well as theater experiences. Photography Branco Gaica 4 COPPÉLIA NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dame Peggy van Praagh’s fingerprints are on everything we do at The Australian Ballet. How lucky we are to have been founded by such a visionary woman, and to live with the bounty of her legacy every day. Nowhere is this legacy more evident than in her glorious production of Coppélia, which she created for the company in 1979 with two other magnificent artists: director George Ogilvie and designer Kristian Fredrikson. It was her parting gift to the company and it remains a jewel in the crown of our classical repertoire. Dame Peggy was a renowned Swanilda, and this was her second production of Coppélia. Her first was for the Borovansky Ballet in 1960; it was performed as part of The Australian Ballet’s first season in 1962, and was revived in subsequent years. When Dame Peggy returned to The Australian Ballet from retirement in 1978 she began to prepare this new production, which was to be her last. It is a timeless classic, and I am sure it will be performed well into the company’s future. Dame Peggy and Kristian are no longer with us, but in 2016 we had the great pleasure of welcoming George Ogilvie back to the company to oversee the staging of this production. George and Dame Peggy delved into the original Hoffmann story, layering this production with such depth of character and theatricality.

The superstars Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev danced it with us in 1964, in a production based on the Borovansky Ballet’s. Our founding artistic director, Peggy van Praagh, created her production in 1965; it premiered in Birmingham on the company’s first international tour, and won a Grand Prix for the best production staged in Paris that year. It went on to become one of the most frequently performed ballets in our repertoire. Peggy’s production came to a tragic end when the scenery was consumed by fire on our 1985 regional tour. The artistic director at the time, Maina Gielgud, created her own production a year later.
