  • Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1
Teaching Classical Languages Volume 10, Issue 2 Kopestonsky 71 Never Out of Style: Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1 Theodora B. Kopestonsky University of Tennessee, Knoxville ABSTRACT Students often struggle to interpret Latin poetry. To combat the confusion, teachers can turn to a modern parallel (pop music) to assist their students in understanding ancient verse. Pop music is very familiar to most students, and they already trans- late its meaning unconsciously. Building upon what students already know, teach- ers can reframe their approach to poetry in a way that is more effective. This essay shows how to present the concept of meter (dactylic hexameter and elegy) and scansion using contemporary pop music, considers the notion of the constructed persona utilizing a modern musician, Taylor Swift, and then addresses the pattern of the love affair in Latin poetry and Taylor Swift’s music. To illustrate this ap- proach to connecting ancient poetry with modern music, the lyrics and music video from one song, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), are analyzed and compared to poems by Catullus. Finally, this essay offers instructions on how to create an as- signment employing pop music as a tool to teach poetry — a comparative analysis between a modern song and Latin poetry in the original or in translation. KEY WORDS Latin poetry, pedagogy, popular music, music videos, song lyrics, Taylor Swift INTRODUCTION When I assign Roman poetry to my classes at a large research university, I re- ceive a decidedly unenthusiastic response. For many students, their experience with poetry of any sort, let alone ancient Latin verse, has been fraught with frustration, apprehension, and confusion.

  • The Grey Album and Musical Composition in Configurable Culture
What Did Danger Mouse Do? The Grey Album and Musical Composition in Configurable Culture This article uses The Grey Album, Danger Mouse’s 2004 mashup of Jay-Z’s Black Album with the Beatles’“White Album,” to explore the ontological status of mashups, with a focus on determining what sort of creative work a mashup is. After situating the album in relation to other types of musical borrowing, I provide brief analyses of three of its tracks and build upon recent research in configurable-music practices to argue that the album is best conceptualized as a type of musical performance. Keywords: The Grey Album, The Black Album, the “White Album,” Danger Mouse, Jay-Z, the Beatles, mashup, configurable music. Downloaded from captions. • Alicia Keys Unleashes New Single “Love Looks Better”
ALICIA KEYS UNLEASHES NEW SINGLE “LOVE LOOKS BETTER” The 15-Time GRAMMY Winner Premiered the Song in a Live Performance during Last Night’s 2020 NFL Kickoff Broadcast The Single is the Latest Offering from Keys’ Forthcoming Album ALICIA STREAM/DOWNLOAD “LOVE LOOKS BETTER” DOWNLOAD ARTWORK PRE-ORDER/PRE-SAVE ALICIA New York, NY -- September 11, 2020 -- Last night, global music superstar Alicia Keys released her anthemic new single “Love Looks Better,” from her highly-anticipated seventh studio album ALICIA (via RCA Records). The song - loud, passionate and unapologetically vulnerable - is a high-energy offering from Keys, who was recently crowned the most RIAA-certified R&B artist of the 21st century. The track was co-written and co-produced by Keys, along with OneRepublic frontman and hitmaker Ryan Tedder. “Love Looks Better” is now available to download and stream HERE. Keys premiered the single with a show-stopping performance during last night’s 2020 NFL Kickoff broadcast, after announcing a $1 billion fund that the NFL league will be contributing to, aimed at supporting Black businesses and communities. Earlier this week, she reflected on her participation in the event with a powerful letter, shared with Billboard, about moving forward and using her platform to provoke conversation and change. “This song has such an energy! It really talks about how busy we’ve become and how fast we’ve gotten used to moving. Now we realize that my love looks better on you. It’s time to really be present for each other. This feels like something we can all understand now, and it’s the perfect energy heading into the release of my new album ALICIA,” Keys said.

  • Danger Mouse's Grey Album, Mash-Ups, and the Age of Composition
Danger Mouse's Grey Album, Mash-Ups, and the Age of Composition Philip A. Gunderson © 2004 Post-Modern Culture 15.1 Review of: Danger Mouse (Brian Burton), The Grey Album, Bootleg Recording 1. Depending on one's perspective, Danger Mouse's (Brian Burton's) Grey Album represents a highpoint or a nadir in the state of the recording arts in 2004. From the perspective of music fans and critics, Burton's creation--a daring "mash-up" of Jay-Z's The Black Album and the Beatles' eponymous 1969 work (popularly known as The White Album)--shows that, despite the continued corporatization of music, the DIY ethos of 1970s punk remains alive and well, manifesting in sampling and low-budget, "bedroom studio" production values. From the perspective of the recording industry, Danger Mouse's album represents the illegal plundering of some of the most valuable property in the history of pop music (the Beatles' sound recordings), the sacrilegious re-mixing of said recordings with a capella tracks of an African American rapper, and the electronic distribution of the entire album to hundreds of thousands of listeners who appear vexingly oblivious to current copyright law. That there would be a schism between the interests of consumers and the recording industry is hardly surprising; tension and antagonism characterize virtually all forms of exchange in capitalist economies. What is perhaps of note is that these tensions have escalated to the point of the abandonment of the exchange relationship itself. Music fans, fed up with the high prices (and outright price-fixing) of commercially available music, have opted to share music files via peer-to-peer file sharing networks, and record labels are attempting in response to coerce music fans back into the exchange relationship.

  • Designing for the Ears As Well As for the Eyes
Inspicio architecture 26 Sushi & Tapas restaurant, Surfside, Florida, 2015. Photo: WSDG Designing for the Ears as Well as for the Eyes By Howard Sherman orris J. Kaplan is a very hands-on businessman. A successful real estate developer and innovative res- M taurateur/entrepreneur, his career track is marked by imaginative ventures. Last year, Kaplan and his wife Sandra began laying the groundwork for a new Miami-area restaurant. A longtime fan of master chef Fernando Chang’s culinary tal- ents, Kaplan was confident there would be a strong demand for Chef Chang’s specialty—Kosher sushi and Peruvian dishes. Kaplan invested considerable time collaborating on the bill of fare and the interior design of his new restaurant. In addition to the menu, one of his primary concerns was acoustics. An avid “foodie,” Kaplan had long avoided dining in restaurants with noise levels so high they intruded on his guests’ ability to enjoy a simple conversation along with their meal. Kaplan made a promise to himself. Diners at his new restaurant would be able to discuss their food (and other topics) without having to shout at the top of their lungs. Coincidentally, as he formulated his plans for what was to be- come “26 Sushi & Tapas” in Surfside, Florida, Kaplan was also involved in building two new Miami area synagogues. During the course of a series of visits to those construction sites, he became aware of an unusually quiet ambience. Building sites are typically noisy environments and neither of these work sites would ever be mistaken for a library, but Kaplan discovered a sound clarity that was unusual enough to spark an investiga- tion.
