If you have a passion for fashion then you will love this issue because it’s truly a fashionable ride. Even if you aren’t a trendsetter when it comes to style, I’m sure you will find inspiration as you flip through our special fashion section. And maybe it will ignite a passion for fashion and before you know it you will be rocking the runway – even if the runway is your barn aisle! Speaking of having a fashion for passion, the photo of me is during my 10-year-old equestrian fashionista phase. Well, maybe not. But I did love wearing my riding clothes and while I may not be smiling in the photo, I promise you I was thrilled to be dressed for the barn. My “supermodel” pout probably had something to do with the fact that stopping to take a photo meant we were wasting precious seconds that could have been spent with the horses. As horse people, we know that spending time with the horses is what it’s all about. As you read the stories in this issue, you will notice a common theme among the artists and designers – they are not only passionate about horses, but they find inspiration in them as well. I love the “My Story” feature each month – written by a person in the horse world about their life. Robyn Noble penned this month’s story and she has both a passion for fashion and for horses. Her parent’s own a jockey apparel company and thanks to their inspiration, Robyn’s own line of equestrian clothing is a success. I think you will enjoy reading her story and discovering how she thought she wanted to be a jockey when she was young – but the call of the fashion world won out. Jan Westmark-Allan – an equestrian fashionista from an early While the equestrian fashion world is full of delightful surprises, age! as you will see in this issue, I know many of you love watching the high-end fashion world, too. If you are a fan of watching celebrities on the red carpet, then you have probably seen stars wearing dresses designed by Badgley Mischka. What you may not know is that Mark Badgley, half of the famous design team, is a horseman. Learn more about his life as a fashion designer and an adult Dana’s Doodles amateur hunter in our story in this issue, including the fact that he has been known to make his own show jackets for the hunter ring. In addition to fashion articles, this issue brings all kinds of summertime fun. From young riders in Colorado to a young girl who rescued a racehorse, this issue is a great ride. PeterWest Side Lombardo: Story Destined to Ride By Holly Hugo-Vidal

Growing up in Wilton, Connecticut, Peter Lombardo didn’t start riding until he was 10 years old. It was a little bit of a late start, but it obviously didn’t get in the way of his success. Today, Peter is a professional with an impressive track record, including achievements such as winning the 2012 Emmett Kelly Challenge Trophy for high performance hunters with Ante Up and riding Mandarin to the Championship at The Pennsylvania National Horse Show and to the Reserve Championship at the Devon Horse Show in 2008. Peter, an “R” USEF hunter and hunter seat equitation judge as well as a clinician, is celebrating his four-year anniversary of his own business – Frontier Farms in Moorpark, California. Despite all these achievements, Peter came from a non-horsey family. But, after a visit to see his aunt in Nashville, Tennessee and a couple of rides on ponies he was hooked. He went home and had to literally beg for lessons. Lessons escalated and soon his family built a seven-stall barn on the property, which Peter presided over. For the first couple of years of his riding career, Peter rode with the late, great Ronnie Mutch, shipping over to Nimrod Farm for lessons and meeting up with Ronnie at shows. Peter showed hunters and equitation, finishing in the top ten of the 1982 ASPCA Maclay Finals. Peter also rode with George Morris at Hunterdon in Peter and Ante Up, owned by Janie Andrew. New Jersey and attended every local clinic with George. Photo by John Zambrano When asked about mentors, he immediately named Ronnie house in Moorpark. Mutch and George Morris. Although today Peter is a top rider and competitor, he continues to do most of the riding himself. As far as his own ring preparation, Peter says he does it all himself – both when prepping horses for his junior and amateur riders and when he is working the horses he shows himself. Very often he rides them in low jumper divisions just to work on patterns, giving the horses a good learning experience. Peter’s hard work has paid off, and since opening Frontier Farms his horses and riders have held their own on the West Coast as well as the East Coast. Peter may not have been born in the saddle, but it is pretty obvious he was destined to ride.

JohnColorado McConnell – Home For Good By Dani Moritz

Colorado native and grand prix show jumper John McConnell has returned home to the rocky mountain state after five-and- a-half years of riding and training at Rancho Corazon in New Mexico. John said that a great opportunity took him to New Mexico. “It was a single-family business that allowed me to train the family as well as show all over the United States and internationally,” he said. While in New Mexico, John was successful in his endeavors. In 2010, John and Rancho Corazon’s grand prix mount Katie Riddle, were invited to ride on the United States Nation’s Cup team in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Rancho Corazon team and the McConnell family made the trip down to watch the United States team win gold – a victory for everyone involved. But recently, John has headed back to his home state of Colorado. John was born and raised in Colorado and learned to ride at his mother’s riding school, Hillcroft Acres in Golden, Colorado. In 1979, John started his own business, Hillcroft II, riding and teaching. During the mid 80s, his mother, Louise, purchased a seven-year-old black Thoroughbred, named So Dark, who John rode and trained. To further his education, John packed up the trailer and took his horse to Virginia to train under the great Rodney Jenkins. Over the course of a year-and-a-half, John successfully received ribbons in almost every grand prix he competed in. He also qualified to

go to the World Cup in 1987 in Paris, France where he had an impressive seventh place finish. In his return to Colorado, he has continued riding and training throughout the Midwest and in California, adding even more grand prix wins to the more than 30 he has already achieved. Included in a long list of accomplishments is getting the best of 49 riders to win the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix in Thermal, California back in 2009 with the only clean round aboard a mare named Carolina. Another one of John’s most successful mounts was Spanish Eyes, a mare purchased from Germany in 2000. The mare remains a huge part of the family along with her four offspring that have been foaled and started by John’s wife, Shala. Spanish Eyes has now retired from the show ring and enjoys her days out on the pasture. John and Shala also have two children who enjoy traveling to the shows as a family. Their daughter Lexie is just starting to compete and hopes to someday ride just like her idol, Karen Cudmore, in the big grand prix. While their son Tyler, on the other hand, is great moral support for his dad, but would rather jump on dirt bikes than on horses. Now that John is back home, he looks forward to doing more of what he does best in his training program – which is bringing horses and riders through the ranks. “I work young horses all the way up to grand prix horses,” he said. “And it’s kind of the same with riders. I’ve helped riders from all levels from starting to jump to showing at the FEI grand prix level.” He has now resumed his training business, Hillcroft II, and is currently operating at John and Katie Riddle, owned by Rancho Corazon, on their way Castle Cliff Farm, located in Sedalia, Colorado and is accepting to United States team gold at the Nation’s Cup in Buenos Aires, new clients. This move is good news for John’s fans in Colorado Argentina. because John says this means he’s back home for good. 22 SIDELINES AUGUST 2013 FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE SIDELINES AUGUST 2013 23 24 SIDELINES AUGUST 2013 FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE SIDELINES AUGUST 2013 25 26 SIDELINES AUGUST 2013 FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE SIDELINES AUGUST 2013 27 28 SIDELINES AUGUST 2013 FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE SIDELINES AUGUST 2013 29 e RoadMy to the Grand Best Prix Friend By Brianne Goutal

Every equestrienne has a favorite horse. We pretend to love them all the same, but there is always a specific horse who captures our hearts or who we feel most connected to. Onira is that horse for me. I had just begun training at Beacon Hill with Max Amaya and Frank and Stacia Madden, and we were looking for a Junior Jumper. Onira was the first horse I tried and the last horse I needed to try. He was seven at the time and jumping local grand prixs in Virginia with Sulu Rose. Krista Freundlich, Beacon Hill’s assistant trainer had ridden his mother as a junior and so our partnership seemed meant to be. I jumped him over what I remember to be a 1.3m course, which finished with a plank that was over a 1.45m – Frank and I still reminisce about that “blue plank towards the ingate” – and I immediately fell in love. We bought him the next day. Onira can be extremely stubborn and he has his own way, which now seems very regular to me. In the beginning I really had to learn how to jive with him. I showed him for the first time roughly three weeks after we bought him, competing in the low juniors for approximately a month before moving up to the high juniors. The first class we did in the highs was at HITS, when it was still in Elenville, New York. Things did not go exactly as planned – I fell off. In fact, everything started off perfectly when we went clear in the first round. However, in the jump-off Onira, with his incredible agility, literally turned me right off before jumping out of the ring! Brianne Goutal One of the many things I love about Onira is that he has such Photo by Parker/Russell – The Book LLC 2013 a strong personality. His quirks are sweet and endearing. For instance, he has never met a treat he did not like. However, given time we competed in the grand prix at The Hampton Classic. That the choice between fresh grass and dry tree branches or bushes, morning, I thought it was going to be a disaster. I decided to ride the choice is always the branches. He will literally rip down him in the FEI before the class and if he felt good and ready, we branches from palm trees and drag them behind him to snack on would try the grand prix. When I went to get on him in FEI, he was as he goes. If you’ve never seen a horse dragging a tree behind asleep in his stall. My groom, Fernando, and I didn’t want to wake him, I can assure you it is quite amusing. him because he looked so comfortable. I told Fernando to call me Also, he has a habit of sleeping right before a big class. He when Onira got up, but by the time he woke up we only had the has always been a “big sleeper”. I really noticed this habit the first chance to ride for 10 minutes, which was unsettling. I was unsure if we should compete, but Fernando was adamant that we should go for it. He pointed out that Onira normally sleeps for one hour before a class, but that day he slept for three. Fernando was sure it was a sign that Onira knew this was the biggest grand prix of his life thus far. So I went for it, and per usual Onira jumped incredibly. We were second and to this day he somehow knows when we have a big class and he sleeps for hours before. Onira is unlike any other horse I’ve ever known. It is almost as if he’s a completely different animal. He looks at you differently; he acts differently. He’s always watching you, like a barracuda. When I call his name and he’s in the barn he gets this misbehaving look in his eye and if he is sleeping, he literally leaps off the ground to greet me. His love is unending and our connection is tangible. I knew the first time I rode him that he was special, and he has proved that every day. I love all my horses, but Onira is unique; he’s my best friend. I hope every horse person out there finds a special horse to share their life with – whether it’s a show horse, a trail horse or a rescue horse, the love of a good horse can make life so much better. It has for me.

Sidelines caught up with the busy rider, fashionista and entrepreneur and asked her ten questions before she headed to Joey Wolffer the Hampton Classic. 3. What do you consider your biggest riding accomplishment? 1. When did you start riding horses? In terms of showing, [my greatest achievement is] finishing well I began riding when I was six-years-old. My dad built a small in all the Big Eq finals. But, now I am really proud of my riding and barn and my sister and I rode around in the paddocks! how it has improved. How often do you ride and who are your trainers? considering how little he has been in the show ring. Mary Manfredi and Peter Lutz are my trainers and I try to ride at least twice a week. I have just one horse, Anotonov. He is an 4. When did you start riding at the Hampton Classic and what eight-year-old from Holland and is an absolute sweetheart. It is such a beautiful and refined show. The footing is great, the rings are beautiful and the competition is at a world-class level. I also love that there is something for everyone to do there without it looking like a fair. The team really has great taste and the grounds are designed impeccably.

5. Do you have a favorite horse show memory? Yes. I was riding one of my dad’s horses, Claletto, in the adult jumpers. We were clear the first round. I went to go to the jump-off and he wouldn’t move away from the gate at the jumper ring, so instead he reared and I fell off. Well, I still had 15 seconds until the buzzer, so my trainer threw me back on. I raced to the first jump and we ended up winning the class. Certainly my favorite Hampton Classic memory!

We, along with my husband, Max, make a really a great team and share the goal of surviving our father’s legacy.

7. Tell us how and why you founded The Styleliner and how it’s going? I founded The Styleliner in June of 2010. I was working in corporate fashion and desperately wanted to do my own thing. I felt there was a growing sense of global style and goods and wanted to bring that to the United States. Food trucks were also becoming a trend in New York in 2010, so combining that with the growing frenzy of social media The Styleliner was born. Like any start-up, it has had its ups and downs, but things are great at the moment. We are working on a franchise in DC as well as a pop-up location in Venice in the area. It has been an organic growth, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

8. Why did you decide to have The Styleliner and Wolffer Estate sponsor The Hampton Classic? We love the Hampton Classic. We have been sponsors for years and plan to be for years to come. We are truly involved in the local community and believe that the Hampton Classic is a world-class event that brings only great things to our community. For the Styleliner, it is also a great way to close out the summer in the Hamptons!

9. How do these partnerships help? Any partnerships through the Styleliner or Wolffer have to be organic and have longevity. The Classic is an event that I have loved my whole life and continue to look forward to each year. The Wolffer patron and Styleliner customer are also those that attend and participate in the Hampton Classic.

10. Who are your biggest influences and why? In terms of riding, I am always in awe and constantly inspired by McLain Ward’s style and ease at navigating both his horse and the course. In terms of life and business, I am inspired by strong women like Diane Von Furstenberg. She built her business from the ground up and has been able to maintain her success throughout the years. I also admire my father’s tenacity and resilience when it came to business. He never let anyone or anything get in his way.

By Mary Adelaide Brakenridge

Italy’s Silvia Rizzo, an accomplished grand prix dressage rider, made her inaugural trip to the United States this past winter, showing and soaking up the sun in South Florida. She piloted her powerful Oldenburg stallion, Donnerbube 2, to an ever-improving series of performances on the dressage circuit, smashing several personal records along the way. Silvia’s bubbly personality, fun fashion sense and compelling dressage rides earned her dedicated fans during her United States competitive venture. Although she rides for her native Italy, she is based at her farm in Germany, Hof Marabunta. She visited Florida to give herself a chance to train and compete with Donnerbube 2, as well as get a glimpse of the equestrian life in Wellington and a taste of American culture. Silvia is devoted to Donnerbube 2, whom she calls “Bubi,” and the two share a close relationship. Their connection and hard work resulted in impressive results in Florida, including fifth place in the Grand Prix Special at the prestigious World Dressage Masters CDI5* Palm Beach and third place in the Grand Prix Freestyle at Wellington Classic Dressage’s Spring Challenge CDI3* (Feb. 8-10). “Bubi brought me to this level,” Silvia explained. “We arrived there together. So we know each other really well, and we really love each other. As in long marriages, there are days in which we really love each other and days in which we do not love each other so much,” she added, laughing. “We sometimes have a little discussion, like a husband and wife. It’s a really funny relationship, I have to say.” Silvia rewards Bubi’s good behavior with his favorite treat: bananas. “Every time we finish work, or we finish a competition, he is expecting his bananas,” she said. “He is like an orangutan. Every time I go to the supermarket, I have my arms full of bananas – they must be thinking that I have monkeys at home!” While in Florida, Silvia attracted attention with her fashionable ensembles. All photos by Rui Pedro Godinho But while Bubi is playful around the barn, he is a serious competitor in the show ring. “He really knows when he is in a competition,” said Silvia. “He knows that he has to behave a little bit more than when he is at home.” Bubi also enjoys the prize giving ceremonies and takes advantage of the opportunity to show off. “He wants to have fun with the people and the other horses, and to be watched by everybody,” she noted. “So he’s really full of himself.” Bubi has a large fan club following his travels on Hof Marabunta’s Facebook page. Silvia credits his good looks and playful personality with earning him the attention of spectators, who often ask for photos with him. “He’s a big beautiful black stallion, so he attracts people,” she said. “And what’s really fun is that usually a big, black stallion like him might seem a little dangerous, but he’s more like a movie cartoon. His attitude is so funny and playful. He’s kind of a Mickey Mouse in horse form!” Silvia, like her horse, enjoys her down time but takes Silvia schooling Donnerbube 2. competitions seriously. “When I am in competition, I love riding 46 SIDELINES AUGUST 2013 FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE how the stables are,” Silvia said. “In Germany, you have many stables, but not on such a high level and so close together. Her stylish wardrobe – featuring plenty of bling – acts as the perfect complement to her effervescent nature. When she had to start wearing glasses, she turned that inconvenience into an opportunity to display her style, selecting the blue sunglasses that have become her trademark accessory. Accademia Italiana Style, an Italian line of equestrian apparel, provides complete outfitting for Silvia, ranging from casual schooling attire to competition apparel. “I always want something unique,” she said. “My general idea is to create a fashion, not get used to a certain fashion. Outside of the show ring, Silvia used her trip to Florida to explore the area’s tourist attractions and equestrian scene. Many Thoroughbreds that come off the track are given a second chance, finding careers in the show world as hunters or jumpers. For one horse in particular, the world of racing was not where he was meant to be. Bonus Point, an eight-year-old off-the-track- Thoroughbred raced 18 times, only winning one race before being given his second chance in December of 2010. Only a few weeks after arriving at New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program in Lexington, Kentucky, Bonus Point, more commonly known as “BP,” had many admirers hoping to adopt him and make him part of their family. One girl in Tennessee had her heart set on him as soon as she found him on the Internet. “I was sitting in class one day and had been following online on New Vocations’ website every day looking at horses and came across his picture. Something was like, ‘You need to get this horse,’” said Victoria Bennett. “I called my mom and begged her to get him.” Unfortunately, Victoria thought that she had lost out on the horse of her dreams. Without her knowledge, Victoria’s mother, Heidi Rockhold, had decided to adopt BP as a surprise present for Victoria. “New Vocations told me he had been adopted, and then he showed up in my driveway on Christmas morning. He was my Christmas present two years ago,” exclaimed Victoria “It was the best present ever. I wasn’t expecting it at all.” It only took a few weeks for the shy Thoroughbred to come around and get used to his new home and owner. And now after two years, the pair has formed an unbreakable bond. Bonus Point, who couldn’t quite make it on the track, has found Victoria and BP his true calling in the world of show jumping. Victoria has been where they recently earned a championship ribbon. In addition to showing the gelding in the 3-foot jumper division at local shows, jumping, the pair enjoys taking it slow on the trails. “I’m hoping we’ll be able to move up by the end of this year, he’s doing so well. He loves it and he’s such a good boy. I couldn’t ask for a better horse,” Victoria said. “He’s not really a fast one, he likes to go slow. So I think he found the right career.” The gelding, whom Victoria says has a great personality, never seems to act like a racehorse and is quite the attention grabber. When in the crossties, he will grab her jacket, take the zipper and zip it up and down various times, keeping himself amused. “He has the greatest personality, always has the cutest expressions on his face and he loves to give kisses. He will lick your hair if you’re not careful and he loves to be groomed,” Victoria said. Before adopting BP, Victoria, who already owned another off- the-track- Thoroughbred, had spoken with a few friends who had previously adopted and knew from the start that this was the path she was going to take to find her new horse. The adoption process is fairly extensive, and involves a lengthy approval process, however, once an owner is approved, they must act fast when they find the horse they want. Since adopting BP, Victoria has adopted two more off-the-track- Thoroughbreds from New Vocations. “And I would do it again in a heartbeat. Adopting a horse from New Vocations has been one of the best experiences of my life.”

One Hand at a Time By Lindsay McCall

Susan Treabess of Winters, California, was born without a left hand, but that hasn’t stopped the talented rider as she represented the USA at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington as a Grade IV para-equestrian dressage rider. “Having one hand always gets you double looks. And I wear a ‘hook’ prosthesis so if I’m in anything short sleeve it’s a beacon. That’s nothing new, I’ve experienced that my entire life,” Susan said. Susan is a new mother, and runs a dressage training facility called Winterhaven based out of her hometown. She is also in full competition mode and is looking forward to a hopeful position on the United States Para-Equestrian Dressage Team at the 2014 World Equestrian Games. Sidelines caught up with this amazing woman to find out more about her life and how she hasn’t let her disability slow her down.

How do people react to the fact that you have a hook prosthesis? The different responses from people are really interesting. Some are curious, some ignore it like it doesn’t exist, some people feel pity but most people look at me for me once they see through the “one-armed-girl” glamour. It’s to be expected, it bothered me when I was a teenager and first in college, but now I understand Susan and Fugitivo XII at the 2012 Dressage Affaire its human nature and frankly I respond the same when I see CPEDI3* in Del Mar, California. So in training I personally gravitate toward people The subject of someone’s disability, especially outward disability, who basically say “great, you have one hand, now here’s what you need to improve.” I like no-nonsense coaching, people who will push me past having one hand, but also modify certain things if need be. My main riding instructor and mentor, Ellen Eckstein, never let me play the one hand card growing up. When I first started towards international competition I used double bridle bit converters for a while which allowed me to have one rein instead of two. Until I went to Steffen Peters for a week and he told me point blank “you need to learn to ride without bit-converters, they aren’t doing you or your horse any favors.” Or Dennis Callin who pushed me to leave my professional job in the California State Senate, which I was very successful at, to ride and train full time because: “That’s the only way you’ll achieve the goals you set out for. You’re a good enough rider but this can’t be a hobby.”

What is it like to compete with only one hand? When I first started, I think some judges would feel sorry for me and give me pity points. I was really worried about that for my first few years. Then I started searching out more conservative judges, or judges that my dressage friends call “tough.” I didn’t want high scores, I wanted fair scores that would help me improve. I stopped giving show management my dispensation card, wore long sleeves past my hook so judges wouldn’t notice and I wouldn’t Susan and Moneypenny at the 2010 Alltech FEI World show the para-dressage tests in open shows. I am hoping to compete in the FEI Developing Horse division next year in addition to trying for the US Para-Dressage Team headed to the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy. This year is about getting back in the ring and forming a competitive partnership.

How do you balance riding, training and family? I work on it every single day. This business is hard because you have to be passionate about it if you want to succeed and you have to be devoted. We have 10 horses in full training and about 65 on the property boarded by our clients, many who are also in training. We have everything from weanlings to 30 year-old horses. We are a full-circle operation, which we love, but it is tricky to find personal time sometimes. I have three different personas: the mom; the trainer/coach; and the competitor. So I compartmentalize quite a bit. When I’m training and coaching I’m 100% focused on that. When I’m competing I’m in my bubble. When it is family time, I’m starting to be protective and stick to my guns about that being my personal time with Scott (Susan’s husband) and Logan. Sure, but I All photos by Lindsay McCall, unless noted don’t let it be the focus of my attention.

Has anything unusual ever happened because of your prosthesis? One time we were at a horseshow and my hook broke. I was either going to have to scratch or tie the reins to the end of my arm. I tied the reins to my arm. I got one of the highest scores I’ve ever received from an “I” level judge, and it was a darn good test.

How did it feel to represent the USA at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games? That is a hard feeling to describe. When you work so hard, fall down so many times on your journey to achieving it, and then actually succeed it is surreal. For me it was an out-of-body experience. I think if I represent the United States again, it will be different and I will feel more present and in the moment because I know what is coming and what it takes to get there.

Where are you now with training and horses? How did you become involved with horses and dressage? My first involvement with horses was as a 16-year-old in Kansas City where I lived with my family. I would ride my bike many blocks to the riding stables. I made friends with one of the stable men and he would let me ride the horse to my house, even over train bridges and waterways. It was thrilling to me. I didn’t own my own horse until I was 58 years old. By Robyn Noble

I have been involved with horses my whole life, since I was old enough to climb on my first Shetland Pony. My parents were both horsemen on the track – my mother, Betsy, trained racehorses and my father, Jerry, was a leading jockey. So for me, there was no choice but to grow up in the barn, but I never minded it and in fact embraced it. Mornings for me would be waking up at 4 a.m. and hiding under a horse blanket to sneak onto the backside of the racetrack as children were not allowed on the grounds at that time. When I turned 16, I was old enough to start galloping horses and with my small frame and my father’s race riding experience, I thought about becoming a jockey. As I got older, however, I realized that so many riders were injured, careers were very short and it was a difficult life for a young woman, so I applied myself in other areas. Luckily, I had always ridden and trained my own Thoroughbreds on the side and would sell them as hunters, jumpers and event prospects. This kept me busy and fulfilled as the horses were, and still are, a true passion of mine. While training Thoroughbreds and managing our small 12-stall layup farm in Hollywood, Florida, Robyn, wearing a shirt she designed, and her off-the-track- my mother was also operating a jockey apparel manufacturing Thoroughbred, Cape Haze, sired by Two Punch. I taught myself how to become an embroidery digitizer, which for many years was a lucrative business until the internet and offshore production hurt that business as a whole. Looking for a new direction, I began experimenting with the idea of dye-sublimation and decided to invest and build a new business called Noble Haus, Inc. (www.noblehausinc.com). Using this new technology has allowed me to take my graphic arts background and expand in new directions including a casual line of performance clothing inspired by the equestrian world. Today I produce clothing lines for many well-know names such as WEF, Grand Prix, Guy Harvey, Caspian Casuals and many others. Some of the most exciting new items we have introduced are fully dye-sublimated jockey silks. I kept watching the sewers laboriously cutting and sewing all the little pieces and patterns (oh, have I mentioned the fact that I can’t sew a stitch?) on the jockey silks which could take days to complete...and thought why can’t we print these? With dye-sublimation you can print anything digitally in unlimited colors. So we tried the first set of silks which was met with resistance by the old-timers on the track who disliked change and wanted to keep the traditional type which were all appliqué nylon. We found that with dye-sublimation we cut the time down from three days to three hours from start to finish! The results were amazing, vibrant, clean and light. The jockeys raved about them so much that now we can hardly keep up with the demand. In addition to the jockey silks we have introduced fully sublimated horse blankets. These make great awards blankets, and we have Robyn, left, with her parents, Jerry and Betsy, at Noble’s Jockey done them now for several years for racetracks such as Arlington, Apparel. A life-long equestrian and fashionista, Arianna Vastino saw the connection between horses and fashion in high fashion clothing lines, but noticed the exact opposite with equestrian apparel. Although companies like Ralph Lauren and Gucci have been selling equestrian-inspired clothing for years, she felt equestrian apparel companies just weren’t catching on. “What I wanted to do with Le Fash is create riding clothes that were a little more high end that had a fashion appeal to them,” said Arianna. In 2011, she launched Le Fash – an equestrian fashion collection suitable for showing, schooling and walking through the streets of New York. The line is a favorite among top riders like Jennifer Alfano and Maggie Jayne. Arianna combined her experience in the hunter/jumper ring and years of working in the fashion industry to produce a clothing line that would appeal to equestrians and non-equestrians alike – even women looking for professional apparel. “I wanted to create high fashion for riders that would also create clothes that would really appeal to non-riders who like the Arianna Vastino with her Dutch Warmblood, Zeus, who doubles equestrian style,” Arianna said. “All of our clothes are designed as her show horse and a model for Le Fash. to cross over into your everyday life, so it doesn’t look like riding Photos by Dorian Wolf Photography attire when you are out in the city, at work or with your friends and, of course, it does look like traditional riding attire when you’re in and feel equestrians’ desire, without forfeiting style. “I think it’s the show ring.” important to be a rider still on the circuit and tell people that I wear Le Fash products are made with high quality fabrics, like my clothes and test all the products,” Arianna said. “I actively wear bamboo, to provide attire perfect for performance and the fashion my clothes all the time.” scene. Maricela and Jan Alexandersson with fashions from their Gersemi collection. Photo by Jørgen Bak Rasmussen By Dani Moritz

Created in the image of the fashion brand Kyra K, an equestrian apparel brand developed with the inspiration of six-time Olympian Kyra Kyrklund, Gersemi has taken its place among top equestrian brands. Jan Alexandersson, president and founder of Gersemi, established the brand in 2008 after he had an amicable parting of ways with the Kyra K brand, which he also helped develop. Gersemi, which follows a similar vision as Kyra K, launched its first collection in the spring of 2009. Jan comes from an equestrian family, so he knows what riders want. His parents were breeders from the time he was born until their retirement, his sister was the Chef d’Equipe for the Swedish dressage team for more than 10 years and he worked as a groom and instructor before entering the world of equestrian retail in 1975. Based in Sweden, his new high fashion women’s equestrian label is named after the Norse goddess Gersemi, whose name is synonymous with beauty. The goddess is also known to embrace the strength and serenity that radiates from within horses, so it makes sense that the brand is named after her. Jan says the name was chosen because it symbolizes what Gersemi aims to inspire – beauty. “We thought that was a good name for a brand because that’s what we want to do and that’s what we want people to feel when they wear it.” Keeping in line with the innovative style of its roots with Kyra K, Gersemi blends fashion and function to create a unique brand that adds a touch of style to equestrian sports. Gersemi introduces two collections every year, in addition to standard items like show jackets and breeches. “The style of the brand is functional, but fashionable,” said Jan. “I would say we are probably the most fashionable brand in the equestrian industry. We always Gersemi outerwear makes a fashionable statement. have more functional pieces and then more fashionable Photo courtesy of Gersemi 86 SIDELINES AUGUST 2013 FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE pieces in the collections.” Jan says the brand is also unique in that it is known for its garments showcasing extensive detail that is not usually found in equestrian apparel. “Standard for Gersemi is the higher end fabrics and attention paid to what other brands may see as extras - from interior cell phone pockets, to velvet trim on inside seams, soft pocket lining and luxurious linings,” said Maricela Alexandersson. Maricela doubles as Jan’s wife and a Gersemi designer. She has been designing for the brand since 2011. Maricela works hard to create apparel that offers trendy looks without forfeiting comfort or usability by utilizing fabrics that offer flexibility, breathability and suitability for the various seasons. “We aim to change the way people look at specialty apparel when it comes to riding clothes,” said Maricela. “We want the consumer to wear our clothes not only at the barn, but make our clothes fashionable enough to be able to wear them around town.” The brand is also all-inclusive and draws in a wide variety of customers. “I would say Gersemi goes for all English riders,” said Jan. “We even have western riders that use our brand.” Gersemi may be a relatively new name to the equestrian industry, but its foundation offers a promising future for this fashion forward company. Karina Brez wasn’t born in the saddle. In fact, horses entered her life only three years ago when she became involved with her friend’s nonprofit organization, Horses Healing Hearts (HHH), as an ambassador and honorary chair. She became involved with the organization after her friend was murdered by her alcoholic husband, leaving her friend’s orphaned child behind. Little did she know how much the organization would impact her life. For Karina, her involvement with HHH meant an opportunity to make a difference and gave her a chance to interact with horses. “I always loved horses, I just never had the opportunity to ride them,” she said. “That’s the reason I moved to Wellington.” And soon, helping with fundraising and working at the barn on the weekends became much more than a way to volunteer. It became her inspiration. Karina combined her newfound love of horses and her passion for gemology to create an equine collection as part of her Karina Brez jewelry line, which debuted in 2010. In return, Karina gives a percentage of the proceeds from her equestrian pieces back to HHH. “I’m always trying to raise money for HHH,” she said. “It’s a great charity and I don’t know where these kids would be without it.” Karina and Argento at Horses Healing Hearts sponsor barn While Karina may be relatively new to horses, she has a long Double J. The equestrian world is well known for its special interest in fashion, but for adult amateur hunter rider Mark Badgley, it is far more than a hobby. Mark is the co-founder of Badgley Mischka and they have been hailed by Vogue as one of the “Top 10 American Designers” and as the darlings of the Hollywood set. Competing at top horse shows throughout the country and juggling a successful career comes easily to Mark, because he has passion for both parts of his life. “The horse world is a subculture that is impossible to explain,” he noted. “Until you’re really exposed to it, it’s such a funny sport to try to explain how it really works. A natural athlete, Kim Farlinger of Cedar Valley, Ontario, participated in several sports during her youth, but her love of horses eventually won out. She quickly advanced up the levels and, in 2003, captured the junior gold medal at the North American Junior and Young Riders’ Championship. Two years later, she finished fourth individually in the young riders’ division at the same event and was short listed to the Canadian Show Jumping Team for the first time. Since then, Kim has enjoyed impressive results in grand prix rings across North America. She is now focusing on developing a group of talented young horses, including Caprice van de Brouwershoeve, a 10-year-old Westphalian mare that will start contesting the larger grand prix events this season. Giannini

Jeff Shuler had been riding and eventing for three years when fate dealt a life-changing hand in terms of his passion for horses. In August 2010 he attended a polo match in Aiken where, to his surprise, one of his friends was playing. Of course, one thing led to another. Jeff took one polo lesson from Lito Salatino and got totally hooked. Jeff’s game has come a long way in a very short of amount of time. He is currently rated 1 in arena polo, 0 on grass, which is a step up from the -1 rating for new players. “I was thrilled to be chosen by USPA for the Developing Players program.” Jeff said. “The odds were not with me – 180 kids applied for the team – and I am ecstatic that I did make it.” The polo bug that bit Jeff infected him with the long- term goal to play professionally and, like many of his chukker-minded contemporaries, he’s smart about the importance of a safety net. His immediate plans include earning a degree in business at USC Aiken, starting this fall. “I’m lucky that my parents have been very supportive. They have become horse enthusiasts,” said Jeff, whose older brother Brad also abandoned eventing for his new passion, breeding racehorses. “Our parents have been 100% for both of us, and they Jeff Shuler in action love polo and attend every game possible from practices to actual during Team USPA matches.” practice chukkers Jeff credits Lito for getting him into polo and helping him to buy at Everglades Polo his first pony. Craig Fraser coached Jeff while he was on the interscholastic team in Aiken. Billy Rabb helped him to get his other four horses. They both helped him to refine his skills. “I’ve worked with Billy the longest,” Jeff said. “He taught me a great deal about looking professional and acting professional on and off the field, and especially about the importance of taking good care of the horses. He brought me up from being a young rider and took me to where I was selected for Team USPA.” Other major mentors include several of Aiken’s high goal Jeff Shuler players: Owen Rinehart (6 grass, 9 arena), Adam Snow (6 grass, 9 arena) and Julio Arellano (9 grass, 8 arena). “Owen’s changing Jeff said. “From that match the team went to the finals the next the way I’m playing,” Jeff said. “He’s known for telling players to day, but the sponsor was able to play in that game. American Arlene (Tuny) Page had a good go of it at her first national show in Germany this summer, taking 2nd and 3rd with her lovely mare, Alena, in the Grand Prix and the grand Prix Special. Meanwhile, young Caroline Roffman (pictured) is taking Europe by storm with her two mounts. She and Her Highness finished 2nd out of 39 in their first European competition ever. And a week later Caroline and Al Guden’s Sagacious earned a 70% in their first grand prix in France. You go girls! Photo by www.mariaguimon.com

His newest mount is Quanto, and he also www.century21cornerstone.com leases an equitation horse named Hometown Hero. “Most of my riding life I’ve just been a weekend warrior, but recently my partner and I moved out to Locust Valley and it’s literally two minutes from the barn, so in the summers I can try to sneak in some rides before I go into the office,” he smiled. “I ride with Pamela Polk, who I absolutely adore. Hunter’s Moon Farm is a beautiful facility and it backs up to a 600-acre horse preserve, which is extremely unique for the New York area. We can go out on the trails and it is so much fun. I’ve never been at a facility that had that to offer, so it’s a really nice way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.” With his home on Long Island near the tranquility of the barn and his office in New York, one of the world’s fashion capitals, Mark has found a unique way to combine two different worlds and make both of them his own. The Middle Tennessee Pony Club hosted a USPA Polo Clinic in June at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tennessee. Instructor Brandon Alcott, who teaches clinics for the USPA National Club Development team, reviewed the basics of polo and the talented group of riders took to the sport immediately. Brandon had the participants working on polo equitation, the four basic swings and rules. After a few drills, Brandon concluded the day with a scrimmage. Some of the players were even able to carry the ball the length of the arena at a canter! Photo by Steve Bishir

While I am a horse person through and through, I also have a huge soft spot for canines. I’m not alone in my love for both equines and canines – visit a barn or head to a horse show and the canine world is in full force, making it evident that horse people love dogs. My love for four-legged creatures began before I could walk, and when I was still a youngster I discovered the Disney movie The Ugly Dachshund. The movie, about a Great Dane who believes he is a dachshund, spoke straight to my horse-obsessed little kid heart. My family already had two yappy Dachshunds, but I didn’t have a pony (which is what I truly wanted) so getting a Great Dane seemed like the perfect thing – a dog that I could also ride. In the end my parents decided a pony was a better choice, and I gladly welcomed an equine into my yappy canine world. Years and years went by but I did finally get a Great Dane. I rescued a two-year-old female Great Dane, who was a horse- size dog that hogged the couch and left me very little room in my king size bed. Although she was a canine, she was just like adding another horse to our farm – in fact she was larger than our Miniature Horse. One of my former riding students, Mandy Su, has a Great Dane named Ben – a handsome young Dane who I had the pleasure of meeting when I went to the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event in Lexington, Kentucky this summer.

Sidelines Editor Jan Westmark-Allan enjoys a photo op with Ben while at Rolex.

Ben joined us each day at the Kentucky Horse Park and he was a continuous source of entertainment – not only for us, but also for the countless people we encountered. Since the majority of the spectators at Rolex were horse people, there was no shortage of comments that ranged from, “He’s the size of a horse!” to “If you put a saddle on that dog, you could jump him cross-country.” While we didn’t saddle up Ben and start riding, we did take him over to the little kid jumps to check out his form over fences. (He has great scope and his distances to the fences were perfect.) Horse people love to jump their dogs so we weren’t the only ones asking our dog to jump. We were, however, the only ones with a dog the size of a Shetland Pony. While I tend to think that small dogs like Jack Russells and Corgis are the dogs of choice for the horsey set, I was surprised at how many horse people stopped us to tell us they also had a Great Dane. And several children told us they loved their Great Dane because they could ride them just like a horse, even without a saddle. It’s definitely a doggone funny horse world.

The Bottom Line: At the end of the weekend, I left with fond memories of what it’s like to have a Great Dane in your life, as well as a lot of laughs at all the comments from spectators at the Horse Park. If I could have had a nickel for every time someone saw Ben and said, “If you had a saddle you could ride that dog!” I probably would have made enough money to feed another Great Dane – and buy a saddle too! Horse people love to jump their dogs and Ben shows off his form over fences. Photos by Mandy Su – amsphotography.com 128 SIDELINES AUGUST 2013 FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE
