I, William Henry Archer, Clerk of the Municipality of the Village of Yorkville, in the Couuty of York, do hereby certify that parts one and three of the withiu list constitute a correct list for the year 1879, of all persons appearing by the last Assessment Roll of the said Municipality to be entitled to vote at Elections for Members of the Legislative Assembly, and that parts one and two constitute a correct list for said year of all persons appearing by the said roll to be entitled to vote at Municipal Elections in said Municipality, and I hereby call upon all Electors to examine the said List, and if any omissions or other errors are perceived therein, to take immediate il>?ooeedi:ngs to have the said errors corrected according to law.     The Use of Apprenticeship and Adoption by the Toronto Protestant Orphans’ Home, 1853–1869 CHARLOTTE NEFF* While the Toronto Protestant Orphans’ Home, like other children’s homes of mid- to late-nineteenth-century Ontario, was established to make available long-term institutional care for dependent children, it also relied heavily on home placements. It made extensive use of both apprenticeship (binding out), which was a legally recognized and protected relationship, and adoption, which was not. The decisions of the Home’s female Managers were thus not driven by a rigid vision of the merits of institutional care or of what childhood should be like for their charges; rather, they dealt with each case individually, an approach that may be partially attributed to the maternal influence but also to pragmatic concerns. Home placement was an important feature of such care well before the implementation of the foster care system in 1893. VIENNA PAOLANTONIO A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO September 2020 © M. Vienna Paolantonio, 2020 Abstract This dissertation examines the relationship between urban space and minority ethnic identity. It makes extensive use of oral testimony and a variety of archival documents including personal correspondence and photographs, parish records, and newspaper records to reveal the way postwar Italian immigrants utilized traditional religious practices to nurture and express a feeling of belonging in the Toronto neighbourhood known as Little Italy. The Processione di Cristo Morto (The Procession of the Dead Christ or PCM) on Good Friday was part of a larger approach to religious devotion which included public processions for patron saints embedded in the premigration lives of southern Italian immigrants who settled in the College Street neighbourhood. Immigrants brought with them the assumption that public space was an appropriate location for nurturing and expanding dense networks of information and support connected to leisure activity and devotional practices. Although use of neighbourhood space for leisure appears to be a gendered practice among Italian immigrants, during the PCM women occupied and directed the use of public space on a scale equal to men. I argue the PCM was unique in terms of its appeal to Italian immigrants from all regions of Italy and became an important symbolic vehicle for publicly expressing the evolution of personal and communal Italian identity from Italian “immigrant” to Italian-Canadian “ethnic” over two generations.

    STAFF REPORT ACTION REQUIRED Residential Buildings on Beverley Street and Stephanie Street – Inclusion on Heritage Inventory Date: October 28, 2008 Toronto Preservation Board To: Toronto and East York Community Council From: Director, Policy and Research, City Planning Division Wards: Trinity-Spadina – Ward 20 Reference Number: SUMMARY Following a request from a property owner, staff have researched and evaluated the properties along the east side of Beverley Street, south of Stephanie Street, and determined that many of the residential buildings have cultural heritage value that merit inclusion on the City of Toronto Inventory of Heritage Properties. The inclusion of the properties on the City’s heritage inventory would enable staff to monitor any changes to the sites and encourage the retention of their heritage values and attributes. RECOMMENDATIONS The City Planning Division recommends that 1. City Council include the property at 15 Beverley Street (Samuel Caplan House) on the City of Toronto Inventory of Heritage Properties; 2.     STAFF REPORT ACTION REQUIRED 15 – 27 Beverley Street – Official Plan and Zoning By-law Amendment, Demolition Application under Municipal Code 667 – Final Report Date: July 29, 2010 To: Toronto and East York Community Council From: Director, Community Planning, Toronto and East York District Wards: Ward 20 – Trinity-Spadina Reference 09 133546 STE 20 OZ Number: 10 200430 STE 20 OZ 10 205317 STE 00 RH SUMMARY This application was made on or after January 1, 2007 and is subject to the new provisions of the Planning Act and the City of Toronto Act, 2006. The applicant proposes an 11-storey residential building at 15-27 Beverley Street. Townhouses with separate entrances are proposed along Beverley Street at the base of a 3-storey podium with a residential building above. Access for parking and loading is located off the public lane at the south side of the site. The proposal involves the demolition of existing buildings on the site, including all of the residential rental dwelling units, with no replacement rental housing to be provided. Two buildings listed on the City’s Inventory of Heritage Properties would also be demolished. As directed by City Council at its meeting on July 6 and 7, 2010, this report reviews and recommends approval of the application to amend the Official Plan and Zoning By-law, and approval of the Staff report for action – Final Report – 15 Beverley St 1 application to demolish the existing residential buildings without requiring the replacement of the residential rental units. An application to demolish the listed heritage buildings on-site has been submitted to Heritage Preservation Services and is currently under review.

    STAFF REPORT ACTION REQUIRED 203-205 College Street – Zoning Amendment Application – Request for Direction Report Date: May 19, 2016 To: Toronto and East York Community Council From: Director, Community Planning, Toronto and East York District Wards: Ward 20 – Trinity-Spadina Reference 15 208876 STE 20 OZ Number: SUMMARY The owner of the property at 203-205 College Street has appealed their application for a Zoning By-law amendment to the Ontario Municipal Board due to Council's failure to enact the requested amendments within the time prescribed by the Planning Act. A pre- hearing has been scheduled for August 16, 2016. The purpose of this report is to seek City Council's direction with respect to the position of the City at the Ontario Municipal Board hearing. The proposal before the Ontario Municipal Board is for a new 29-storey building (99.9 metres including mechanical penthouse) comprised of a 26-storey tower atop at 3 to 5-storey base. The proposed development has an FSI of 15.16 times the lot area and a gross floor area of 21,454 square metres including 19,433 square metres of residential gross floor area and 2,021 square metres of non-residential gross floor area comprised of retail at grade and office on the second and third floors. The existing 5-storey office building with retail at grade would be demolished. Two levels of underground parking are proposed which would include 58 vehicular parking spaces.
