We depend on your feedback: [email protected] Public rights are restricted to printing, copying or distributing this document exactly as seen here, complete and without any cutting or editing. See Principles on main webpage. Village, church, easy field path, woodland, views, hills In Brief This is a rewarding scenic walk around one of West Sussex's most charming villages. You approach the hills on two sides across the open fields, then up through imposing woodland to the top of the South Downs. This walk makes an excellent appetiser for lunch at the village inn (see the text for contact info). There are no nettles to speak of on this walk. Many walkers will wear boots because of the hills and especially in a wet winter. But walking shoes or trainers will be fine if the weather is not too damp. This walk should be fine for your dog too. The walk begins South Harting , West Sussex. You can park discreetly anywhere in the village, but this guide has found a quiet road near the school where there is plenty of parking (except during the school run?). This is Tipper Lane, postcode GU31 5QT . This starting point has the advantage that it avoids a hazardous section of the main road just below the church where there is no footway .

We depend on your feedback: [email protected] Public rights are restricted to printing, copying or distributing this document exactly as seen here, complete and without any cutting or editing. See Principles on main webpage. River, villages, views, prehistoric site, Saxon churches, pubs In Brief This is a great Hampshire walk showing the best of the county in two different aspects. One is the sweeping high landscape with distant views culminating at Old Winchester Hill Fort. The other aspect is the gentle chalk stream of the River Meon as it meanders through some delightful villages with remarkable churches and memorable inns. This walk was inspired by one from the book of Adventurous Walks . There is a wealth of choice for refreshment in the villages near the end and also in Soberton not far from the start. Note that the only pub in Hambledon may be closed, as it was in July 2012. For information, call 023 9263 2419. There are few nettles to irritate legs Exton but boots are absolutely essential for this walk, preferably to a good ankle Old Win- length. This is because of one stretch chester Hill on the South Downs Way down from Meonstoke the Hill where there is always some mud.

As the evening drew in we headed east towards Petersfield seeing a Roe Deer bounding down the road in front of us, before arriving at Coulters Dean Bank. Here Greater Butterfly Orchids were flowering and their faint perfume could be smelt on the damp evening air. Common Spotted Orchids and Wild Columbine were also part of the downs riches. Overhead bats flew and a Robin sang from the bushes but all too soon darkness set in, so we headed back to the hotel and bed. Day 2 Saturday 11th June The morning dawned bright and clear and we set off for our first visit of the day. Arriving at a small wet meadow, the first plants to be seen were Southern Marsh and Narrow Leaved Marsh Orchids, but unfortunately the meadow had been cut, so many of the other flowers were not visible. We therefore set off for Odiham Common, stopping briefly to look at a native Black Poplar.

  • Cissbury Ring and Stump Bottom, West Sussex
Hi there! Adele here and this is my West Sussex Weekends walk CISSBURY RING AND STUMP It’s a great 5 mile loop around Cissbury Ring, the largest hill fort in Sussex, near to the tiny village of Findon. The BOTTOM, WEST SUSSEX effort of getting to the top of Cissbury Ring is always worthwhile and on a clear, sunny day I’m rewarded with a changing vista in every direction. To read my full story visit www.west-sussex-weekends.com so I can tell you why I think you will love this walk and what highlights to expect. The West Sussex Weekends website is a great Challenging Terrain resource where you will also find ideas for places to stay, eat and drink plus plenty more inspirational stories to tempt you to explore more corners of West Sussex. Getting there 5 miles Cissbury Ring is located close to the village of Findon, just north of Worthing in West Sussex. From the Circular roundabout where the A24 meets the A280, take the small road heading east signed for Findon village. At the crossroads go ahead into Cross Lane which then 2.5 hours becomes Nepcote Lane. The post code BN14 0SG should get you to this point. Just before the large green on the left, turn left (signed 271015 for Cissbury Ring) and follow this lane all the way along as it becomes a single track and then finally meets a gate ahead (with the hill fort mound visible on your right). There is a small parking area to your left here.
