  • The Merlot Magician
modern winemaking and now, with his Aquila Sangiovese, he had done it again. The story wasn’t there in the Chronicle’s wine section that morning; instead, a front-page head- line caught his attention, announcing that a huge fire had destroyed $100 million worth of wine in a warehouse on Mare Island, California. Thackrey had nearly all his wine, some 4,000 cases, stored in a warehouse on Mare Island called Wines Central and his first thought was reflex denial: ‘Hmm, I didn’t know there was another wine stor- age warehouse on Mare Island.’ He clicked open the story. The warehouse was indeed Wines Central and it had been burning since 3.30 the previous afternoon. Despite the efforts of 120 firefighters, 21 fire engines and 12 aircraft, the fire was still sending up a 700ft plume of smoke into the sky. ‘My reaction then was a fairly basic “Oh shit”,’ Thackrey says. ‘Outside of that warehouse I had barely enough wine left to drink myself into the grave. On the other hand I knew that building and I thought some of my wine might survive a fire there. It was a vast, vast military fortress built of reinforced concrete and steel and only one part of it was wood, so I knew it wasn’t going to burn to the ground. There was also no question in my mind that it was arson.’ The first call he made was to his insurance broker. He left a message saying they would have to file a claim, possibly a very large claim.

Reservations Accepted | 10/1/2021 1 Welcome to Virginia’s First Urban Winery! What’s an Urban Winery, you ask? Well, we are. Take a look around, and you’ll see a pretty unique blend of concepts. First and foremost, you’ll see wine made here under our Mermaid label, highlighting the potential of Virginia’s grapes and wine production. Virginia has a rich history of grape growing and winemaking, and we’ve selected the best grapes we can get our hands on for our Mermaid Wines. We primarily work with fruit from our Charlottesville vineyard, with occasional sourcing from other locations if we see the opportunity to make something special. We’ve put together some really enjoyable wines for you to try – some classic, some fun, all delicious. Secondly, you’ll see wines from all around the world. Some you’ll recognize, others you might not. These selections lend to our wine bar-style atmosphere and really enrich the experience by offering a wide range of wines to be tried. They’re all available by the bottle, and most by the glass and flight as well, right alongside our Mermaid Wines. The staff can tell you all about any of them, so rest assured that you’ll never be drinking blind. These wines also rotate with the season, and there’s always something new to try. We have a full kitchen too, with a diverse menu that can carry you through lunch, brunch and dinner from the lightest snack to a full-on meal. With dishes that can be easily paired with a variety of our wines, make sure you try anything that catches your eye.

Pinot Noir makes for an elusive kind of romance PinotFile Volume 5, Issue 39 The First Wine Newsletter Devoted to Pinotaficionados June 12, 2006 Inside this issue: Kalin Cellars: Wines with the Fifth Taste Marin County Pinot 3 Microbiologists Dr. Terrence (Terry) Leighton and Dr. Frances Leighton founded Noir Celebration Kalin Cellars in Marin County in 1977. Through the ensuing years they have Wine Closure 6 labored in obscurity to produce some of the greatest California wines that only Dichotomy wine critics and wine geeks have heard of. The eccentric couple avoid publicity Rivers-Marie 7 and photos at all cost. I have been intrigued by their wines for years because of their unique character, age ability and individuality. MacMurray Ranch 8 Monterey Winemak- 9 The origin of the name Kalin is a mystery, but some pertinent background infor- ers’ Celebration mation is available. Terry Leighton was a distinguished microbiology professor at the University of California Berkeley until retiring in 2000. He was the original Gina Da Pinot 9 winemaker at Domaine Laurier in the 1970s prior to starting his own label. The wines at Kalin Cellars are all single vintage, single vineyard distinctive wines. The Leightons own no vineyards but source grapes from long standing agree- ments with top growers outside of Marin County . An exception was the use of Pinot Noir grapes from Devil’s Gulch Vineyard (farmed by Mark Pasternak) in Marin in 1987 and 1988. The Leightons produced sparkling rosés in those two vintages that are legendary among wine enthusiasts. The Leightons do farm portions of two vineyards in Burgundy, where they make a small amount of “Kalin Bourgogne” which I believe has not yet been sold commercially.
