The Independent – Student – News http://www.independent.co.uk/student/news/bournemouth-graduates-celebrating-oscar- glory-for-their-work-on-gravity-9168893.html Bournemouth graduates celebrating Oscar glory for their work on 'Gravity' by JOE NERSSESSIAN on Tuesday 04 March 2014 Graduates from two Bournemouth Universities are celebrating this week after Gravity picked up seven Oscars at Sunday’s ceremony. 50 Animation and Film graduates from Bournemouth University (BU) and Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) worked on the visual effects part of the film for London-based company, Framestore. The work undertaken by the graduates was specifically recognised as the movie claimed a technical award for Visual Effects, and also won a BAFTA in the same category last month. Framestore, whose senior representatives collected the Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, are world leaders in visual effects and have an outpost on the AUB campus, where some of the work was completed. The outpost is “very important” to students' development, according to the lecturer in animation at BU, Adam Redford, who also spent six months working on the film. “It can be a great opportunity for graduates to get their first job, and first taste of proper industry experience by working there,” Adam told The Bournemouth Rock. ”I felt really proud to have been involved in a film that won so many awards, especially for the visual effects. It’s a good feeling to know that you have had some input, however small, into something that has been received so positively by the visual effects community and the general public,” said Adam. -

Also being celebrated is the first collaboration between The Film Foundation, founded by Martin Scorsese, and LACMA and The Annenberg Foundation, to preserve four films by the acclaimed French filmmaker Agnès Varda. Director: Martin Scorsese Classification: MA (15+) Duration: 152 minutes We rate it: Five stars. For any serious cinemagoer or lover of film as an art form, the arrival of a new film by Martin Scorsese is a reason to get very excited indeed. Scorsese has long been regarded as one of the greatest of America’s filmmakers; since the mid-1980s he has been regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers in the world, period. With landmark works like Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990) and Bringing Out the Dead (1999) to his credit, Scorsese is a director for whom any actor will go the distance, and the casts the director manages to assemble for his every project are extraordinarily impressive. As a visualist Scorsese is a force to be reckoned with, and his soundtracks regularly become known as classic creations; his regular collaborators, including editor Thelma Schoonmaker and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus are the best in their respective fields. Paraphrasing all of this, one could justifiably describe Martin Scorsese as one of the most important and interesting directors on the face of the planet. The Departed, Scorsese’s newest film, is on one level a remake of a very successful Hong Kong action thriller from 2002 called Infernal Affairs. That film, written by Felix Chong and directed by Andrew Lau, set the box office on fire in Hong Kong and became a cult hit around the world. -

The spectacle of high- velocity 3D detritus raging past terror-struck, puny-looking astronauts stranded in space turned the Earth’s orbit into not only a site of horror but also a wasteland of hyperobjects,[1] with discarded electronics and satellite parts threatening everything that lies in the path of their ballistic whirl (see Figure 1). While the film made no environmental commentary on the long-term effect of space debris on communication systems or the broader ecological problem of long-lasting waste materials, it nevertheless projected a harrowing vision of technological breakdown, which found a thrilling articulation in the projectile aesthetics of stereoscopic cinema. -

However, finding appropriate software tools in the market to verify this sort of expectation is too costly and complicated in their natures, and this causes a number of difficulties to attempt technical experimentation. A convenient and easy tool to facilitate such experimentation was developed in this study and was used successfully for performing various measurements with regard to user engagement in music and movies. Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation. -

Abstract: This article aims to analyze the representations of the Brazilian people in the animation Rio (2011), directed by Carlos Saldanha, from the discussions of this concept carried out by different theoretical lines (LUSTOSA, 2013; WITOSLAWSKI, 2005). From this analysis, we propose some possibilities of using this type of discussion as material in Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PLE) classes, especially thinking about issues such as the reproduction, propagated by national and international media, of stereotypes that refer to the imaginary about the Brazilian identity by the students of these courses, that is, those interested in knowing Brazilian culture for tourism or academic purposes, or, not uncommonly, professionals.
