REVIEWS, INTERVIEWS 2009 - current

REVIEWS

2016 Please Begin Again Infinite Body, by Eva Yaa Asentawaa, July 2, 2016, web “For every time I’ve grieved that a good dance–or a great dance–will be seen by relatively few, I grieve harder to think that that could be your fate. You have been wonderfully made for the many. Please do not fade away…. I’m moved–eyes tearing–by how you sweep your audience into your story, your meaning, your humanity, teaching us and revealing us to ourselves.”

Delirious Dances: To Begin The World Over Again Theater Scene, by Joel Benjamin, July 9, 2016, web “The dancers and musicians were committed to communicating complex political and social ideas with directness and skill helped by the music which alternately evoked Copland hoedowns, patriotic marches, and the complex modern harmonies of Philip Glass.”

Edisa Weeks CV 8 Edisa Weeks’ Delirious Dance Political Dance? Amsterdam News, by Charmaine Warren, July 14, 2016, print “There is beautiful movement, live music and a good deal of theater in Edisa Weeks’ “To Begin the World Over Again”. Timed perfectly, or not, to run concurrently with the election season, “To Begin the World Over Again” puts the audience in the driver’s seat.

2015 Moves at La Mama Arts Journal, by Deborah Jowitt, June 3, 2015, web “The two are very close to us, and extremely interesting to watch: Weeks a lean, strong, beautiful woman with a fuzzy halo of black hair, Kinzel rough around the edges—a fine dancer who doesn’t look like A Dancer. Improbable images nag at me—such as Odysseus, making his way homeward, encountering the enchantress Circe. At other times, I’m moved by the careful tenderness with which they sometimes touch each other… Weeks begins her solo as if conjuring forces out of the ground—arms reaching out and curling in, hips swaying; her vibrating fingers suggesting rain. Everything she does bespeaks power, but also the reining in of it.”

2014 RE-cap: What you missed at this year’s chashama gala. Annual event known for its outrageous atmosphere – and this year’s edition didn’t disappoint The Real Deal, by Ann Imperatore, June 14, 2014, web “High Point: The hair designers were amazing. Each person who asked got an original hair design, each more creative than the last.”

2013 Brooklyn-Based Choreographer Aids WPC Through Dance Collective Endeavor, Volume 17 Issue 1, Winter 2013 “Ms. Weeks made an announcement about Women’s Press Collective (WPC) Publications Benefits Program that teaches how to design and print materials to tell the story and meet life needs of low-income and working people and movements for change.”

Give Kids a Shot – National Meningitis Association Gala By Karen Salkin, May 3, 2013, web Delirious Hair Designs consisted of two ladies doing unbelievable creations in the hair of anyone who wanted them; the whole process more than added to the already-festive atmosphere. It made everyone interact, instead of the usual staid charity event atmosphere. Brilliant move!

2012 Swimming in a Dry Theater , by Claudia La Rocco, November 30, 2012, print. “At one point Carolyn Hall, Jonathan Kinzel and Edisa Weeks are clumped together like one lumpy organism, moving slowly in the murky upstairs space; they separately insinuate themselves into the balcony seating, like animals lurking in the bushes. Presumably, they are up to no good… It’s necessary to mention everyone and to stress the keen pleasures involved in watching such finely honed, smart artists navigate this ceaseless stream of movement.”

To Begin The World Over Again The Edge, by Wickham Boyle, September 28, 2012, web. “Delirious Dances, helmed by Weeks, often makes works that utilize text, spoken word and new music. Her work really is at the confluence of what I consider to be 21st Century theater. It is work that provokes and prods and asks you not to spend time on whether this is really dance, or really a play or is it a concert. Rather it asks the audience to envision a new world…I would run, skip or subway it out to the sweet Irondale Edisa Weeks CV 9 Theater and experience this work.”

Delirious Dances’ to Begin The World Over Again: Your participation is required Dance Musings, by Erin Bomboy, September 28, 2012, web. “Get inspired. Get involved. And go see To Begin The World Over Again.”

2011 Roulette, in its New Location, Hosts a Make-It-Up Dance Adventure Brooklyn Daily Eagle, by Carrie Stern, November 16, 2011, print. “Stunning Edisa Weeks provided instant focus as she lay prone, suspending her tall frame halfway out from the edge of the stage floor.”

A Performance from Soup to Nuttiness The New York Times, by Claudia La Rocco, October 16, 2011, print. “When you have dancers like Edisa Weeks and Jodi Melnick, in a situation like this you have to be quick to catch whatever riches come your way.”

Developing Dances at the ICA The Boston Phoenix, by Marcia B. Siegel, August 2, 2011, web. “Edisa Weeks attempted a bigger statement in ‘Manufacturing Consent’… The cast of 34 began in marching formations and phrases of stamping that implied either anger or conformity.”

Walter’s World: Thirty5-In-5-Day Two World, by Walter Rutledge, June 21 2011, web. “Delirious Dances presented ‘Manufacturing Consent,’ a dance with a brilliant human study… The dance was immediately engaging and subtle.”

2009 Dance Review: Choreography Renaissance in Harlem iDANZ, by Careitha Davis, April 16, 2009, web. “Theatrical skills distinguish Edisa's work as an imaginative with creativity to spare. Picture yourself lost on Mars with a crowd of aliens around you, and the only thing you can do is dance! This is what Between an Arrow and a Fall makes me think of.”

New Moves Festival Features Hip Steps from 3 Cities Post Gazette, by Jane Vranish, May 11, 2009, print. “New York's Edisa Weeks, seated at a laptop computer in the audience, controlled the movement destiny of Solomon Bafana Matea in Between an Arrow and a Fall. It was an appealingly inventive duet with live video.”

New York Social Dairy, May 8, 2009, web. “The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) held this year’s ArtSeen event at the Friedrich Petzel Gallery in Chelsea. It was the best attended benefit in the organization’s 25+ history. The real entertainment of the evening was Delirious Designs by Edisa, an onsite hair design booth in which the artist applied flowers, stuffed animals and text to people’s hair. The line for hair design was stayed full throughout the evening.”
