Strictly Public & Non-Confidential - Album Review #1 ‘In the Aeroplane Over the Sea’ by Neutral Milk Hotel It’s Christmas 1945 and I’m in Amsterdam booking a room for the night in the Neutral Milk Hotel. I meet a man at reception by the name of Jeff Magnum who gives me a complimentary copy of the hotel’s signature album ‘In the Aeroplane Over the Sea’. Inscribed on my hotel key card are the words ‘and this is the room, one afternoon I knew I could love you’. Jeff tells me that’s from the second verse of King of Carrot Flowers pt.1, to make hotel guests feel welcome. A list of recommended songs on the back of the card include ‘O Comely’, ‘Holland, 1945’, ‘In the Aeroplane Over the Sea’ and ‘Ghost’. I ascend the spiral staircase to my room and a multitude of framed pictures paint colorful descriptions of the album on the walls. Distortion.com Perfectly arranged chaos 90s Lo-Fi…psychedelia…. Looking around everything slowly starts to seem vaguely familiar and it dawns on me that I am not actually in Amsterdam but at home in Notting Hill. Going to the window my eyes squint looking up at the glaring sun and I see a wooden aeroplane gliding overhead with the Wright Brothers throwing something down at me shouting ‘ashes and confetti are not mutually exclusive’.

The Squirrel Bait and Rodan genealogies continued to dominate Kentucky's and Chicago's post-rock scene during the 1990s. Half of Rodan, i.e. Tara Jane O'Neil (now on vocals and guitar) and Kevin Coultas, formed Sonora Pine with keyboardist and guitarist Sean Meadows, violinist Samara Lubelski and pianist Rachel Grimes. Their debut album, Sonora Pine (1996), basically applied Rodan's aesthetics to the format of the folk lullaby. Another member of Rodan, guitarist Jeff Mueller, formed June Of 44 (11), a sort of supergroup comprising Sonora Pine's guitarist Sean Meadows, Codeine's drummer and keyboardist Doug Scharin, and bassist and trumpet player Fred Erskine. Engine Takes To The Water (1995) signaled the evolution of "slo-core" towards a coldly neurotic form, which achieved a hypnotic and catatonic tone, besides a classic austerity, on the mini-album Tropics And Meridians (1996). Sustained by abrasive and inconclusive guitar doodling, mutant rhythm and off-key counterpoint of violin and trumpet, Four Great Points (1998) metabolized dub, raga, jazz, pop in a theater of calculated gestures.

Zerbröckelnde Utopien | norient.com 10 Oct 2021 07:07:28 Zerbröckelnde Utopien by Benedikt Sartorius Zehn Jahre war Jeff Mangum untergetaucht. In dieser Zeit mutierten seine Lieder mit der Band Neutral Milk Hotel zu Hymnen für Trostsuchende und Widerständige. Nun spielen Neutral Milk Hotel wieder Konzerte.

Are you done yet?” I’m thankful for friends, such as: Adam Suarez, Phillip Sitter, Brandon Roney, Robert Gayden and Zach Folken, who would periodically ask me “What’s your thesis about again?” That was a question that would unintentionally put me back on track. In terms of staying on task my thesis committee (mentioned elsewhere) was nothing short of a godsend. Maybe more like The Mountain Goats or Neutral Milk Hotel. It’s an album from a singer who is confident enough to let her writing speak for itself. There’s usually just an acoustic guitar, sometimes a drum machine, and Laura’s voice: powerful, passionate, and vulnerable.
