Relocation of Applicants for International Protection Relocation of applicants for international protection Information leaflet for Greece EN Photo: Andrea Bonetti SUPPORT IS OUR MISSION If you are in need of international protection and eligible to participate in the European Union Relocation Programme: • Notify an EASO or UNHCR representative or the Greek authorities of your intention to apply for international protection and join the relocation programme. • Go to a Regional Asylum Office of the Asylum Service, or • Call through Skype, user ID: asylum.service.relocation. For the schedule, check www.asylo.gov.gr, appointment for registration. ‘What is relocation?’ Relocation is the transfer of asylum seekers who are in clear need of international protection from Greece to another participating European country. The application for international protection will only be examined in the country of relocation. Relocation is a safe and legal way for asylum seekers to be transfered from Greece to other European countries. There is no fee or payment to participate in the programme. Accommodation during the procedure and transfer to the country of relocation is free of charge. Photo: Andrea Bonetti Andrea Photo: To where can I be relocated? You can be relocated to a European country that participates in the Relocation programme. Am I eligible for the Relocation Programme? You will be registered in the relocation programme if you are an asylum seeker in clear need of international protection, if you entered Greece after 24 March 2015, and you are a national of Syria, Eritrea, Iraq or a stateless person previously residing in one of these countries and all other countries included in the list of eligible countries, which is updated every quarter*. Please ask EASO for more information. * Countries which have had an international protection recognition rate of over or equal to 75% in EU countries for the last quarter IMPORTANT Relocation step by step: 1) You must submit an application for international protection in Greece. 2) You must present all documents you have that verify your identity as well as all documents provided to you by the Hellenic Police. 3) The truthfulness of your statements and the authenticity of the documents you present will be checked by the Asylum Service and the European country of relocation. 4) As soon as Greece is informed by that European country that you and your family members (husband/wife and children) are accepted, Greece ensures that you will be transferred there safely, legally and free of charge as swiftly as possible. 5) You will be notified of the relocation decision in writing. 6) You will be provided with information about the transfer to the country of relocation. 7) When you arrive in the country of relocation, your application for international protection will be examined and your basic needs will be covered Can I choose the country to which I will be relocated? You cannot choose the country of relocation. For the decision, certain aspects will be taken as much as possible into consideration: special needs, state of your health, family links, language skills and any cultural or social ties that you may have with the country of relocation. Other factors are also taken into consideration, such as the number of places available in the participating countries. • After being granted international protection by a European country, in principle you will have to remain in that country for at least five years. • You are not allowed to leave from that European country unless you are given permission by the authorities. • If you leave without permission, you will be returned to the country to which you had been relocated. The review also includes suggestions for further areas that should be designated within the scope of these two Directives. Although the two Directives have different objectives, the areas designated as sensitive or vulnerable are reviewed simultaneously because of the similarities in the designation process. The investigations will focus upon: • Checking that those waters that should be identified according to either Directive have been; • in the case of the Nitrates Directive, assessing whether vulnerable zones have been designated correctly and comprehensively. The identification of vulnerable zones and sensitive areas in relation to the Nitrates Directive and Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive is carried out according to both common and specific criteria, as these are specified in the two Directives. 1.1 THE URBAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT DIRECTIVE (91/271/EEC) The Directive concerns the collection, treatment and discharge of urban wastewater as well as biodegradable wastewater from certain industrial sectors. The designation of sensitive areas is required by the Directive since, depending on the sensitivity of the receptor, treatment of a different level is necessary prior to discharge.

A significant percentage of MSW originates from household activities. In this study we calculate the costs of setting up and running a zero-waste mortar-producing (ZWMP) process utilizing MSW in Northern Greece. The process is based on a thermal co-processing of properly dried and processed MSW with raw materials (limestone, clay materials, silicates and iron oxides) needed for the production of clinker and consequently of mortar in accordance with the Greek Patent 1003333, which has been proven to be an environmentally friendly process. According to our estimations, the amount of MSW generated in Central Macedonia, Western Macedonia and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace regions, which is conservatively estimated at 1,270,000 t/y for the year 2020 if recycling schemes in Greece are not greatly ameliorated, may sustain six ZWMP plants while offering considerable environmental benefits. This work can be applied to many cities and areas, especially when their population generates MSW at the level of 200,000 t/y, hence requiring one ZWMP plant for processing.

    North Macedonia: Possible acquisition of 10 % stake in Alexandroupoli LNG terminal North Macedonia intends to acquire 10 % stake in a project for the construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Alexandroupoli in northern Greece, by investing between 6.5 and 7.5 million euros, said North Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev. PM Zaev also said that North Macedonia will acquire 25 % stake in the project for the construction of a gas-fired power plant in the vicinity of the terminal. He added that it is expected that the construction of gas interconnection with Greece will start in 2021, for which a 14 million euros grant through the Western Balkans Investment Framework is already secured. The cost of the project is estimated to 54 million euros. In October, the Government of North Macedonia said that it is considering Greece’s offer of co-ownership, through the state-owned power utility ESM, of an 800 MW gas-fired power plant to be built in northern Greece near the town of Alexandroupoli, which would produce two and a half times more energy than the amount of the energy deficit that North Macedonia currently has. It also said that North Macedonia is suspending planned participation in the project for the construction of Bulgaria’s second nuclear power plant Belene. The Alexandroupoli LNG project, for which Gastrade has obtained a license in 2011, envisages the construction of LNG storage facility with the capacity of 170,000 cubic meters, which could supply 17 million cubic meters of gas per day to Greek gas network. With the construction of gas interconnection between Greece and Bulgaria, the investors are considering options to supply natural gas to the entire Balkan region.
