Morrissey: from Where He Came to Where He Went – with and Without the Smiths DVD Morrissey: From Where He Came To Where He Went – With And Without The Smiths Pride/MVD Kate Harper (CHARTattack) 03/11/2009 1:55pm 0 comments 6 love it 5 hate it This double DVD set features two documentaries about The Smiths and Morrissey. The first, Morrissey — The Jewel In The Crown , examines Mozzer's solo career from his 1989 Viva Hate debut to 2004's You Are The Quarry . Unfortunately, as the film hasn't been authorized by Morrissey or his management, it's completely free of his music. The result is a film that only contains boring, stupid jingle music and interviews. Morrissey doesn't appear in the film (save for a short television interview segment at the end), but producer Stephen Street ( Viva Hate ), Factory Records head Tony Wilson, guitarist Vinni Reilly and journalists Stuart Maconie, Paul Morley and John Robb do. The most interesting bit is the continuing argument between Street and Reilly about who really wrote the music on Viva Hate . Street claims he did, while Reilly says Street's demos were so horrible that he was forced to fix everything in the studio, but didn't get any credit on the album. The documentary descends into extremely boring territory after that. The Smiths — Under Review disc is better, since it chronicles The Smiths' career and actually includes the band's music and videos. This documentary does an excellent job of examining the Mancunian four-piece's career and their continued importance to modern pop music. All the interview subjects from the first half of the package are present in the second, and it's much more enjoyable to watch. Smiths and Mozzer fanatics will probably eat this for breakfast. Unfortunately, the package is presented so that anyone else who might be curious about Morrissey or The Smiths may be scared away by the time they actually get to the meat and potatoes of why the dour Englishman has been so important to modern music. .

When Strawberry Studios closed down the staff were busy clearing out the building. There were at least 20,000 copy masters from various bands and the artistes or their agents. They were contacted as to whether they wished to buy the tapes from the Strawberry library because they were clearing out. Mostly the artistes already had their own copies and said Strawberry should dispose of them. Some asked for the copy masters and these were handed over. The remaining copy masters were consigned to the skips. A colleague David Drennan was assigned the task of contacting as many of the clients as possible about their tapes. In the case of Factory Records, David Drennan remembers that they only asked for The Happy Mondays tapes and did not want any others. (see copy email ‘Dave Drennan’) Later I discovered that Factory Records had parted company with Joy Division/New Order. I felt that the tapes of Martin Hannett's work i.e. the ones he produced should not be destroyed. That is why I removed them from the skip and rescued them from landfill. When Warners were threatening court action I contacted Nick Turnbull (see copy email ‘Nick Turnbull’) who had been the owner of Strawberry Studios and who closed it down.

Abstract There is a dark mythology surrounding the post-punk band Joy Division that tends to foreground the personal history of lead singer Ian Curtis. However, when evaluating the construction of Joy Division’s public image, the contributions of several other important figures must be addressed. This thesis shifts focus onto the peripheral figures who played key roles in the construction and perpetuation of Joy Division’s image. The roles of graphic designer Peter Saville, of television presenter and Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, and of photographers Kevin Cummins and Anton Corbijn will stand as examples in this discussion of cultural intermediaries and collaborators in popular music.

    Hall of Fame Andy Partridge Andrew John Partridge (born 11 November 1953) is an English singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer from Swindon. He is best known for co-founding the rock band XTC, in which he served as the group's primary songwriter and vocalist. While the band was formed as an early punk rock group, Partridge's music drew heavily from British Invasion songwriters, and his style gradually shifted to more traditional pop, often with pastoral themes. The band's only British top 10 hit, "Senses Working Overtime" (1982), was written by Partridge. In addition to his work with XTC, Partridge has released one solo album on Virgin Records in 1980 called Take Away / The Lure of Salvage. He has also collaborated (as performer, writer or record producer) with recording artists, including Martin Newell, with whom he recorded and produced an album in 1993 entitled The Greatest Living Englishman released in Japan as a duo album. Partridge was producer for the English band Blur during the recording of Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993). He was replaced by Stephen Street at the insistence of their record label, Food. According to Partridge he was unpaid for the sessions and received his expenses only. Partridge also wrote four songs for Disney's version of James and the Giant Peach (1996) but was replaced by Randy Newman when he could not get Disney to offer him "an acceptable deal". In the 2000s, Partridge began releasing demos of his songs under his own name in The Official Fuzzy Warbles Collector's Album and the Fuzzy Warbles album series on his APE House record label.

    Journal of Popular Music Studies, Volume 25, Issue 1, Pages 56–76 How Joy Division Came to Sound Like Manchester: Myth and Ways of Listening in the Neoliberal City Leonard Nevarez Vassar College Manchester, England, is among the most well-known cities today for the creation and celebration of popular music, thanks in no small part to the group Joy Division. Among the first bands to be associated with a postpunk aesthetic, Joy Division eschewed punk’syouthful rage and unrelenting din for an expansive, anthemic sound distinguished by its dynamic scope, machinic pulses, and by singer Ian Curtis’ssonorous baritone and existential lyrics. As the first significant band to sustain a career in Manchester, thus bypassing the music industry headquartered in London, Joy Division is also recognized as pioneering the DIY tradition that has famously characterized Manchester’s musical economy over the last four decades. The group didn’t achieve this alone; the role of Manchester label Factory Records is well documented, as, increasingly, is the foundation laid by the city’s networks of musicians, scene participants, and cultural institutions (see Crossley; Botta).´ Yet these local facts don’t quite explain the contemporary resonance of Joy Division’s Manchester roots for music fans and city boosters today. Perhaps more than any other Mancunian band, Joy Division are claimed to sound like Manchester, at least the Manchester of a certain era. That is, the group did not just originate from the late 1970s Manchester of deindustrialization, carceral housing estates, Thatcherism, and punk’s youthful refusal; nor do they simply illustrate a recurring Mancunian ethos of creative pluck and insouciant disregard for London’s cultural hegemony (Haslam, Manchester, England).
