Studying these animals and sharing their stories with fellow Missourians is one of the most pleasurable and rewarding aspects of our work. HECNAR1,2 1Department of Biology, Lakehead University, 955 Oliver Road, Thunder Bay, Ontario, P7B 5E1, Canada 2Corresponding author, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract.—Common Five-lined Skinks (Plestiodon [formerly Eumeces] fasciatus) are difficult to study due to their small size, secretive habits, and semi-fossorial natural history. Habitat selection and dispersal have been studied at several locations across the range of the species, but few details of movements are known. Our objectives were to use radio-telemetry to gain more insight into skink movements and to test the efficacy of small, lightweight transmitters that we externally attached. We fitted 31 skinks with transmitters that provided up to 16 consecutive days of dispersal information. Movements varied greatly among individuals with some staying close to initial capture sites while most moved tens to hundreds of meters over a short period of observation. We located most of the tracked individuals under cover of woody debris but found they were much more mobile than previous mark- recapture studies suggested. Our tracking supported the idea that traditional home ranges were not occupied, but instead most individuals made regular linear movements while returning to the same locations occasionally. Individuals spent on average just over 30% of their time underground, in grass tussocks, and inside standing trees near the end of the active season. -

The conservation status of Crawfish Frogs (Lithobates areolatus) in Indiana has changed over the past several decades. Once described as being locally plentiful, declines led to the listing of Crawfish Frogs as a State Endangered Species in 1988. The status of Crawfish Frogs is difficult to assess because of their fossorial nature and abbreviated calling season. Several records for this species in Indiana are . 50 yrs old and have gone unconfirmed for several decades. The status of most populations along the northern and eastern periphery of their range is undetermined, and many are suspected to be extirpated. However, recent surveys performed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources have confirmed the continued presence of Crawfish Frogs in parts of southwest Indiana. The discovery of populations in southeast (Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge) and extreme south-central (Spencer County) Indiana over the past several years has redefined the perceived range of this species in Indiana. Monitoring the Northern Prairie Skink on Private Land
Skink Watch: Monitoring the Northern Prairie Skink on Private Land Here are step by step instructions on how to monitor prairie skinks: 1. Locate appropriate habitat on your property. Generally prairie skinks tend to be in the following habitat: ◦ open grassland, or grassland along edges of aspen forest ◦ south or west facing slopes ◦ sand blowouts surrounded by vegetation such as creeping juniper ◦ open areas with sandy soil ◦ gardens, debris or wood piles 2. Lay cover boards in habitat where prairie skinks are likely to be found. Skinks like to hide under pieces of wood or metal. Scraps of wood approximately 1 by 2 feet work well. Putting extra cover in skink habitat makes them easier to find and monitor. It is best to lay several pieces of cover in one area and to put out the cover in spring or early summer. If cover already exists (ie wood piles or debris piles) go to step 4. 3. Leave cover undisturbed for at least two weeks. 4. Check under cover boards by quickly lifting it, using a motion similar to opening a book. 5. Take note of skinks under the board, and also keep an eye for skinks running out from under it. 6. Collect information about any skinks seen (see Recording Sheet). 7. Replace cover as you found it. 8.
