Ferguson Can't Complain with 6-0 Win 08:28, January 14, 2008 Ferguson can't complain with 6-0 win 08:28, January 14, 2008 Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson praised his side for its 6-0 demolition of Newcastle United on Saturday but said he was disappointed with the way it played in the first half, when it failed to score. "We had too many individuals in the first half trying to walk the ball into the net," said Ferguson. "But the second-half display was marvelous, absolutely fantastic and could not be faulted," he told Setanta Sports. Ferguson, who saw the champions move back to the top of the table on goal difference from Arsenal, heaped praise on Cristiano Ronaldo, whose second-half hat-trick took his tally for the season to 22 goals. "He has gone close to scoring one several times before for us and he capped a fine display with his hat-trick. To score 22 goals at this stage of the season for a wide player is fantastic, incredible. But I am not surprised. He is always practicing, improving and his decision-making is getting better." Ronaldo told Setanta: "It was a very special day today. I am very proud and very happy, but it is even more important we are top of the league." Ronaldo opened the scoring with a cleverly taken free kick that he fired under the Newcastle wall as they jumped expecting a lofted shot after 50 minutes. His second, after 70 minutes, completed a good move involving Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez and his third, two minutes from time, again gave goalkeeper Shay Given no chance. Carlos Tevez added two and Rio Ferdinand the other as United recorded their biggest win of the season. Nigel Pearson, in temporary charge of the Newcastle side following the departure of manager Sam Allardyce on Wednesday, struggled to hide his feelings afterwards. "It's a very, very difficult day for us, it's very painful. They were a lot better than us and the way we folded at the end, it is difficult to take. "We as a club need to move forward quickly to get the situation resolved." Newcastle were unlucky to have a Michael Owen goal disallowed for offside in the first half when television replays showed he was onside when he collected the ball, but Ferguson was upset that referee Rob Styles had turned down a clear penalty appeal by United. "Maybe he was trying to prove a point but I thought it was unfair," he said. "Source: China Daily/Agencies" .

A defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the US Navy would expand its presence in the Mediterranean to four destroyers from three. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, en route to Asia, said Obama had asked the Pentagon for options on Syria, where an apparent chemical weapons attack that killed as many as 1,000 civilians has upped pressure on Washington to respond. “The Defense Department has responsibility to provide the president with options for all contingencies,” Hagel said. “And that requires posi- tioning our forces, positioning our assets, to be able to carry out different options - whatever options the presi- dent might choose.” He did not elaborate. The defense official, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said the USS Mahan, a destroyer armed with cruise missiles, had finished its deployment and was due to head back to its home base in Norfolk, Virginia.

The results demonstrate that, on average, a managerial sacking results in a post-announcement day market-adjusted share price rise of 0.3%, whilst a resignation leads to a drop in share price of 1% that continues for a trading month thereafter, cumulating in a negative abnormal return of over 8% from a trading day before the event.

  • English Premier League: Should Mike Ashley Sell Newcastle United This Summer?
English Premier League: Should Mike Ashley sell Newcastle United this Summer? Author : Dean Perretta Ever since being crowned SKY BET Championship 2016-2017 champions last season, Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United have weathered many twists and turns throughout their touch and go re-acquaintance in the fast lane of the English Premier League. Irrespective of a tenth place finish in the EPL in 2017-2018, Newcastle United’s most gravest challenge moving forward remains predominately on a questionable transfer policy stemmed by the universally unpopular ownership of Mike Ashley, coupled alongside the unsteady direction of the club, which has seen a perennial yo-yo effect rallying back and forth between the EPL and Sky BET Championship. During the last two consecutive transfer windows, Newcastle United owner Ashley relatively deprived Magpies fans and the club of standard bearing acquisitions which are conveniently suited to the lofty level and intensity of the EPL. 1 / 3 In the summer of 2017, Newcastle United purchased six players (Christian Atsu, Joselu, Mikel Merino, Javier Manquillo, Jacob Murphy and Florian Lejuene), whereas 13 players departed from Tyneside. Of the six Newcastle United players which arrived at St. James’ Park in the summer of 2017, Newcastle United spent almost £45 million. Conversely, of the 13 players which departed from the North East last summer, the Magpies made just £17.5 million. Furthermore, the last transfer window in January 2018, the Mapies did not permanently purchase any players and decided to loan three players until the end of the season (Islam Slimani, Kenedy and Martin Dubravka). Newcastle United did not sell any players during the January 2018 transfer window, rather loaning out 10 players (Aleksander Mitrovic, Jack Colback, Freddie Woodman, Rolando Aarons, Henri Saivet, Jamie Sterry, Daniel Barlaser, Kyle Cameron, Ivan Toney and Adam Armstrong).
