  • But, Oppositeness and Formal Similarity in Parallel Contexts
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Sussex Research Online Signals of contrastiveness: but, oppositeness and formal similarity in parallel contexts M. Lynne Murphy, Steven Jones and Anu M. Koskela accepted for Journal of English Linguistics, January 2015 Abstract By examining contexts in which ‘emergent’ oppositions appear, we consider the relative contribution of formal parallelism, connective type and semantic relation (considered as an indicator of relative semantic parallelism) in generating contrast. The data set is composed of cases of ancillary antonymy – the use of an established antonym pair to help support and/or accentuate contrast between a less established pair. Having devised measures for formal and semantic parallelism, we find that but is less likely to appear in contexts with high levels of formal parallelism than non-contrastive connectives like and or punctuation. With respect to semantic parallelism, we find that contrastive connectives are less likely to occur with pairs that are in traditional paradigmatic relations (‘NYM relations’: antonymy, co-hyponymy, synonymy). The paper’s main hypothesis – that non- paradigmatic relations need more contextual sustenance for their opposition – was therefore supported. Indeed, pairs in NYM relations were found to be more than twice as likely to be joined by a non-contrastive connective as by a contrastive one. INTRODUCTION Linguistic means for realizing contrast are many and they overlap, as illustrated in (1): (1) drug-related offending was relatively [high in relation to alcohol], but [low in relation to cannabis]. (COCA ACAD 2009; Mark Davies 2008–) In (1) we are led to understand alcohol and cannabis as standing in contrastive focus, despite the fact that, on their own, they are not opposite in meaning.

UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA Edmond, Oklahoma Jackson College of Graduate Studies Ernest Hemingway and the Reality of the American Dream A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE FACULTY in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS IN ENGLISH By Nathan Billings Edmond, Oklahoma 2011 ABSTRACT University of Central Oklahoma Edmond, Oklahoma NAME: Nathan Billings TITLE OF THESIS: Ernest Hemingway and the Reality of the American Dream DIRECTOR OF THESIS: Dr. Gladys S. Lewis PAGES: 76 Ernest Hemingway’s fiction criticizes the American Dream and its myth of success in the early twentieth century. In The Sun Also Rises, “The Snows of Kilimanjaro,” and “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber,” Hemingway exposes the corrupting influence of monetary wealth. During the economic collapse of the Great Depression, many Americans created for themselves a fantasy world to avoid the reality of the failure of the American Dream. In “Fathers and Sons,” The Garden of Eden, and For Whom the Bell Tolls, Hemingway’s characters escape into their own illusions. “Wine of Wyoming” and To Have and Have Not show the disillusionment of individuals who are denied access to the Dream. Hemingway uses the example of Santiago from The Old Man and the Sea to show a new and more realistic American Dream in which material wealth is not the goal. Hemingway is not bound by the geographical setting of his characters in his assessment of the Dream, illustrated by using Americans away from the United States, outsiders in America, and an expanded understanding of America to make his evaluation.

SWIMMING SLOWLY, IN THE SEA, AT SAN SEBASTIAN: CONVALESCENCE, MEMORY, AND THE BODY IN ERNEST HEMINGWAY’S THE SUN ALSO RISES by JEREMY COLLINS (Under the direction of Dr. Carolyn Medine) ABSTRACT “Emotion,” Spinoza writes, “which is suffering, ceases to be suffering once we form a clear picture of it.” The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway is the story of Jake Barnes struggle to form a clear picture of his suffering amongst the Lost Generation of post-World War One Europe. In this thesis, we will take a thorough look at Hemingway’s use of the images of football, youth, and war in relation to the characters of Robert Cohn and Jake Barnes. We will find through looking at the relationship of these characters and these images, where to locate meaning in the novel. The thesis will also use the larger body of Hemingway’s work, fiction and non-fiction, biography, and letters. Through looking closely at the novel and its greater context, we can see how Hemingway offers a protagonist who overcomes both his personal disaster and the crisis of the age: nihilism. INDEX WORDS: Hemingway, Nihilism, The Sun Also Rises, Memory, Sports, Existentialism.
