Isaac Newton and Socinianism Isaac Newton was not a Socinian.1 That is to say, he was not a commu- nicant member of the Polish Brethren, nor did he explicitly embrace the Socinian Christology. What is more, Newton never expressly ac- knowledged any debt to Socinianism—characterised in his day as a heresy more dangerous than Arianism—and his only overt comment 1 The first version of this paper was written in 1997 as an MPhil assignment in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge. The Experience of Early Friends By Andrew Wright 2005 Historical Context The world of the early Friends was in the midst of radical change. The Renaissance in Europe had strengthened the role of science and reason in the Western world. The individual’s power to understand and make sense of reality on their own was challenging the authority of the Catholic Church. Until recently there had been only one church in Western Europe. Martin Luther’s “95 Theses” that critiqued the Catholic Church is generally seen as the beginning of the Reformation when western Christianity splintered into a plethora of various “protestant” churches. In order to fully understand the significance of the Reformation we must realize that political authority and religious authority were very closely aligned at this time in history. Political authority was used to enforce religious orthodoxy as well as to punish those who expressed unconventional views. Meditating on the intensity of feeling that many have today about issues like abortion or gay/ lesbian rights or end of life issues might begin to help us to understand the intensity of feeling that people experienced around religious issues during the Reformation. Many people felt like only the triumph of their religious group could secure their right to religious expression or save them from persecution. The notion of separation of church and state only began to become a possibility much later. The English Reformation and Civil War In England, the reformation developed a little later than in Germany and in a slightly different way. In 1534, King Henry VIII declared the Church of England independent of the Roman Catholic papacy and hierarchy. -

Quaker Attitudes towards Signs and Wonders I T is quite clear that not all early Quakers expressed their belief through signs, although a surprisingly large Inumber of Friends (many of whom remain unknown) did do so. One reason why so many were involved in the various types of signs and wonders may, perhaps, lie in the general support for this type of expression given by Fox, Nayler, Burrough, Farnworth, Howgill, Hubberthorne, Parnell, and other outstanding leaders of early Quakerism. If the practice of appearing as signs had not met with the approval of these powerful moulders of the new movement, it would never have become so widespread, lasted so long, or won such broad acceptance among early Friends.1 George Fox was himself drawn towards this type of behaviour, although he never went naked, dressed in sackcloth and ashes, blacked his face, or broke bottles or pitchers. A reading of Fox's Journal shows that he recorded a number of such cases (Robert Huntington, Thomas Ibbott, Richard Sale, William Simpson, and others), without making any condemnation of their various forms of signs. A close examination of his language shows, moreover, that Fox apparently approved these acts sometimes saying that these people were "moved of the Lord" to perform their signs,2 while at other times saying simply that they "were moved".3 A very interesting passage, following his description of Ibbott's sign of the Great Fire, shows that Fox believed that "the Lord has exercised his prophets and people and servants by his power, and showed them signs of his judgements".4 Elizabeth Harris (who was wont to appear in sackcloth 1 Cf. -

:Faustus Socinus's A Tract Concerning God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit Introduction, Translation, and Contemporary Relevance Alan W. Gomes Introduction As I pointed out in a recently published book chapter,1 one of the values of studying historical theology is that it allows us to "pump intellectual iron" with some of the great thinkers of yesteryear. We can learn a tremendous amount from the theological debates of the past because they were often waged by intellectual giants, the likes of whom we typically do not see today. Nor should we think that the orthodox had a monopoly on all of the brains in these disputes. As I noted in that chapter, I commonly tell my students that they simply do not make heretics like they used to! As an example, I often cite Faustus Socinus (1539-1604), well known for his denial of many of the cardinal teachings of orthodoxy, such as the doctrine of the Trinity, the deity of Christ, pe nal substitution, and God's foreknowledge of future contingent events. In Socinus "we encounter a mind well versed in the biblical languages, classical literature, logic, philosophy, exegesis, and theology, all pressed into the service of overturning the historic doctrines of the faith!" 2 Now, there are at least two reasons for engaging the arguments of a "dead and buried" opponent like Socinus, particularly for someone Journal of the International Society of Christian Apologetics, Volume 1, Number 1, 2008 38 ISCA JOURNAL called to an apologetics ministry. First, "in this way we may be able to spar vicariously with adversaries tougher than the ones we face in our day-to-day ministries."3 This builds up our "theological muscles," mak ing it easier to deal with less formidable opponents. -

QUAKER STUDIES 12/2 (2008) [230-252] ISSN 1363-013X REDEFINING QUAKER SIMPLICITY: THE FRIENDS COMMITTEE ON NATIONAL LEGISLATION BUILDING, 2005 Margery Post Abbott and Carl Abbott Portland, Oregon and Portland State University, Portland, Oregon, USA ABSTRACT In 2005, the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the major Quaker peace and justice lobbying organization in the United States, completed a substantial remodeling and expansion of its office building on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. The building exemplifies a self-conscious effort to express Quaker values of simplicity and stewardship in architectural choices. Examining the changing meanings of simplicity as expressed in Quaker meeting houses, this article argues that contemporary Friends in the United States have given nontraditional meanings to the concept and now associate simplicity with environmental stewardship in personal and community life. -

Arianism in English Nonconformity, 1700-1750

During the time of English Nonconformity, Arianism was not only embraced, but openly acknowledged by most of the Presbyterian ministers. That generation of ministers, who contended so zealously for the orthodox faith, had finished their labours, and received from their Lord a dismissal into eternal rest. Those champions among the laity who, at the begin- ning of the controversy, stood up so firmly for the truth, had entered as well into the joy of their Lord. Though their children continued Dissenters, too many of them did not possess the same sentiments or spirit. Among those who succeeded these ministers were too many who embraced the Arian creed. To this unhappy change contributed the example and conversation as well of many from the younger Presbyterian ministers. In consequence Arianism spread far and wide in the Presbyterian congregations, both among the ministers and the people. This unhappy controversy proved the grave of the Presbyterian congregations, and of those of the General Baptists. The effects of Arianism, though at first scarcely visible, gradually produced desolation and death. But what the apostle taught about Christ also contained ideas that some people found difficult to understand. While the history progresses after the time of the apostles, we learn that prior to the beginning of the fourth century all creeds and summaries of faith were local in character.
