Morning, evening and night they prayed the “divine services” of the Byzantine Church, and this study is the first to examine how these rituals shaped the way they wrote and compiled the Povest’ vremennykh let (Primary Chronicle, ca. 12th century), the earliest surviving East Slavic historical record. My principal argument is that several foundational accounts of East Slavic history—including the tales of the baptism of Princess Ol’ga and her burial, Prince Vladimir’s conversion, the mass baptism of Rus’, and the martyrdom of Princes Boris and Gleb—have their source in the feasts of the liturgical year. The liturgy of the Eastern Church proclaimed a distinctively Byzantine myth of Christian origins: a sacred narrative about the conversion of the Roman Empire, the glorification of the emperor Constantine and empress Helen, and the victory of Christianity over paganism. In the decades following the conversion of Rus’, the chroniclers in Kiev learned these narratives from the church services and patterned their own tales of Christianization after them. The ii result was a myth of Christian origins for Rus’—a myth promulgated even today by the Russian Orthodox Church—that reproduced the myth of Christian origins for the Eastern Roman Empire articulated in the Byzantine rite. -

They look to their God and then to their Mexican Folk Saints, such as La Santa Muerte and Jesus Malverde, for protection and strength. This case study focuses on how religion— in particular Folk Saints such as La Santa Muerte and Jesus Malverde— can give solace and hope to Mexican migrants, mostly Catholics, when they cross the border into the U.S, and also after they settle in the U.S. -

12 Popular Religion and Festivals The introduction of Roman Catholicism to the New World was part of the colonizing policy of both the Spanish and the Portuguese, but on Latin American soil Christian beliefs and practices came into contact with those of the native Amerindian peoples, and later with those brought by enslaved Africans and their descendants. Latin American Catholicism has consequently absorbed elements of pre-Columbian reli- gious beliefs and practices, giving rise to what is known as “popular” or “folk” Catholicism. Popular Catholicism has blended elements of differ- ent religions, yet it is still a recognizable mutation of traditional Roman Catholicism. In Mexico, for example, Catholic saints are matched up with pre-Columbian deities, as are Christian festivals with indigenous ones. Similarly, popular religion in the Andean countries must be under- stood in its historical and cultural context, since it is heavily influenced by the experience of conquest and the persistence of indigenous beliefs under a Christian guise. In recent years, Catholicism in Latin America has also become synony- mous with Liberation Theology, with its commitment to social change and improvement of the lot of marginal sectors. This radical theology was announced at Medellín, Colombia, in 1968 with a formal declaration of the Church’s identification with the poor. The doctrine’s complexity and diversity make it difficult to define, but the influence of Marxism is apparent, along with that of pioneering social reformers and educators such as the Brazilian Paulo Freire. Liberation Theology’s most famous advocate is the Peruvian priest Gustavo Gutiérrez, whose humble origins sharpened his awareness of social problems. -

Honors work challenges students to be more analytical and creative through expanded assignments, real-world applications and enrichment opportunities. Yet, the word “cathedral” evokes spirituality, and thus provides an image that enables a discussion of how to approach writing on spiritual issues. In his analysis of the contemporary evangelical publishing industry, scholar Abram Van Engen explores how a writer should, or can, approach and produce literature from a Christian perspective. He proposes that, in the current market niche occupied by the evangelical publishing industry, audience and market demands have created a narrowly delineated “blueprint” model shaping a specific style and content of acceptable religious/spiritual literature, a model to which others less “mainstream” within the evangelical sub-culture react. -

For a few centuries the emblem of Christ was a headless T-shaped Tau cross rather than a Latin cross. It portrays a naked bearded man whose arms are tied at the wrists by short strips to the transom of a T-shaped cross. An inscription in Greek on the obverse contains an invocation of the redeeming crucified Christ. -

Martina BUCKOVÁ Institute of Oriental Studies, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Klemensova 19, Bratislava, Slovakia [email protected] This contribution is dealing with the question of faith in a supreme being of Polynesia. Believes in this God, called Io, Ihoiho or Kiho, appear in the written records from the end of the 19th century. The problem consists of the fact they appeared after the first contacts with Christianity and no doubt the informants were already influenced by the new faith. Nowadays the specialists incline more to the concept that the existence of a supreme deity cult is the result of the impact of Christian teaching. Keywords:monotheism, Io, supreme being, Polynesian religion The Polynesian religion has its roots in the cult of ancestors and its nature is polytheistic. This is generally valid for the whole of Polynesia despite the differentiation that has obviously taken place throughout the centuries between its Western and Eastern parts. The pantheon of the Eastern Polynesia is dominated by a tetrad of first class deities including and Tangaroa. In the Western Polynesia, however, we meet only with (or rather with a family of Tangaloas )whose etymology remains questionable and there are attempts to derive it from Melanesia. The origin of Polynesian gods still requires explanation. According to one theory the Polynesian gods may be characterized as deified ancestors while other authors suggest that we are concerned with personified forces of nature. And we cannot exclude that both views are partly true. Perhaps the local minor deities are derived from remarkable and important ancestors - or these deities are present in the relevant natural phenomena. -

Hooded, scythe-carrying skeleton bares its teeth at street market stalls, on magazine covers and t-shirts. The new informal saint gains popularity not only in Mexico but also in Salvador, Guatemala and the United States. At the turn of the 21st century, the cult of Santa Muerte was associated almost exclusively with the world of crime: drug dealers, kidnappers and prosti- tutes. Responsibility for this distorted image of the cult laid mostly with biased articles in everyday newspapers such as La Crónica and Reforma. -

Copyright by Laura Ann Hess 2010 ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien created mythology that is fundamentally Christian but in vastly different ways. This task will be accomplished by examining the childhood and early adult life of both Lewis and Tolkien, as well as the effect their close friendship had on their writing, and by performing a detailed literary analysis of some of their mythological works. After an introduction, the second and third chapters will scrutinize the elements of their childhood and adolescence that shaped their later mythology. The next chapter will look at the importance of their Christian faith in their writing process, with special attention to Tolkien’s writing philosophy as explained in “On Fairy-Stories.” The fifth chapter analyzes the effect that Lewis and Tolkien’s friendship had on their writing, in conjunction with the effect of their literary club, the Inklings. -

religions Article Memory, Desire, and “Magic”: Smará in the Atharvaveda Signe Cohen Department of Religious Studies, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO 65211, USA; [email protected] Received: 13 July 2020; Accepted: 16 August 2020; Published: 24 August 2020 Abstract: This essay analyzes the interconnection between memory, desire, and verbal performance in the three so called “women’s love spells” in Atharvaveda 6.130–132. This study unpacks the many interconnected meanings of the term smará, which is used repeatedly in these poems, “memory”, “desire”, or “efficacious ritual speech”. I challenge the traditional definition of these texts as “magical” and argue that applying “magic” as an analytical category to ancient Hindu texts is deeply problematic. Instead, I propose that these poems are better understood in their historical and religious context as examples of ritual speech. Keywords: magic; religion; Hinduism; memory; Vedas; Atharvaveda The Sanskrit noun smará has two distinct meanings, which at first glance appear quite unconnected to one another: “memory” and “desire”. The intriguing part, however, is that smará does not mean either memory or desire in Sanskrit, depending on the context in which the word is used; rather, it appears to carry both meanings simultaneously. To love, in Sanskrit literature, is to remember; without recollection there can be no desire. The complex intertwining between desire and memory is most strikingly illustrated in Kalid¯ asa’s¯ classic play Abhijñana´sakuntal¯ a¯ (“The Recollection of Sakuntal´ a”,¯ ca. 5th cent. CE). This intricate relationship between desire and recollection in classical Sanskrit literature has been examined in some detail by Charles Malamoud (Malamoud 1996) and Amanda Hunt (Hunt 2000).
