Good for the casual fans, maybe a bit of a letdown for the hardcore onesBy Stefan TopuzovMachine Head is probably my favorite band ever. And I have been following them very closely for about a decade and a half now, reading all the available interviews they had given, digging old news articles from their earlier periods, building up a ridiculously extensive collection of old magazine scans, live bootlegs, TV appearances and what not...And maybe because of that, this book was a bit of a let down for me because it didn't provide anything that I didn't already know. In fact, a few times I actually felt I knew more than what was actually in the book. Then again, I gave the book to my father, who's also a fan of rock and metal. He read it, loved it, and decided to look deeper into the band and now he blasts The Blackening and Burn My Eyes every now and then. So, basically, how much you'll like this book – or if you need to purchase it – depends on how deep into the band you are. If you are relatively new to Machine Head and want to have one source of information about what they are about, well – this is it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not the most critical readBy Hague HaswellWhile it was quite interesting to get a succinct history of this band, I felt that it was written from too much of a fan's and not a critical perspective. The failings of the band and the personalities within were glossed over, whilst their achievements were explored much more fully.Because of this, there didn't really seem to be a huge amount of balance. While Machine Head are no doubt a premier band in metal, their fans know this (and that's why they're fans!) so it would have been far more interesting to go into the pitfalls they experienced and how they bounced back from it rather than simply pat them on the back for all the good things they've done.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy CustomerThank you. Over 17 years and eight albums, heavy metal band Machine Head have sold millions of units, earned a Grammy nomination and won personal awards from Metal Hammer and other magazines. The story is a classic rise, fall and rise again scenario - they exploded onto the metal scene in 1994, enjoyed a successful string of albums and then lost their way in the nu-metal era. Now they are in the middle of one of metal's most acclaimed comebacks.Author Joel McIver has interviewed all of the band members several times and has a unique insight into their rollercoaster story, which includes alcohol addiction, inter-band brawls and therapy, sackings, near-splits and two decades of the heaviest music known to man, delivered all over the world. About the AuthorJoel McIver is the author of 20 books on music. His best-known book is Justice for All: The Truth About Metallica (Omnibus Press 2004), which is available in nine languages. He contributes to several British and American music and film magazines and often appears on radio and TV.
