The “sphecid’ fauna of Saudi Arabia (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) is listed. A total of 207 species in 42 genera are recorded including previous and new species records. Most Saudi Arabian species recorded up to now are more or less common and widespread mainly in the Afrotropical and Palaearctic zoogeographical zones, the exception being Bembix buettikeri Guichard, Bembix hofufensis Guichard, Bembix saudi Guichard, Cerceris constricta Guichard, Oxybelus lanceolatus Gerstaecker, Palarus arabicus Pulawski in Pulawski & Prentice, Tachytes arabicus Guichard and Tachytes fidelis Pulawski, which are presumed endemic to Saudi Arabia (3.9% of the total number of species). General distribution and ecozones, and Saudi Arabian localities are given for each species. In this study two genera (Diodontus Curtis and Dryudella Spinola) and 11 species are newly recorded from Saudi Arabia. EVOLUTIONARY ASPECTS OF GEOGRAPHICAL VARIATION IN COLOR AND OF PREY IN THE BEEWOLF SPECIES PHILANTHUS ALBOPILOSUS CRESSON Gerald J. Hilchie Department of Entomology University of Alberta Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Quaestiones Entomologicae T6G2E3 18:91-126 1982 ABSTRACT Prey selection and aspects of life history were studied in a population of Philanthus albopilosus Cresson, near Empress Alberta, and compared with published data reported about other populations. A disproportionately large number of sphecid wasps was used as prey in comparison with prey used by more southern populations. Females did not hunt at flowers, but appeared to hunt suitable apocritans found around the Empress dune, or captured male apocritans which pursued them as potential mates. False burrows appeared to function as visual aid in orientation to the nest. Relative absence of other species of Philanthus implies specialization of wasps of P. albopilosus for life on sand dunes. Differences in prey selected, nest structure and colour of adults suggest geographic isolation and differentiation during Pleistocene glaciations. The Nebraska Sand Hill region is proposed as a northern refugium where differentiation of the dark race, P. albopilosus, occurred during the Wisconsinian glacial stage. A southern refugium in the American Southwest is proposed for the ancestral stock of the pale race, P. albopilosus manuelito a newly described subspecies (type locality Monahans, Ward County, Texas). -

St::ttns of 15 Antioch Insects Listed in Notice of 75 Review by the U.S. Fish "l.nd Wildlife Service INTRODUCTION The sand dune formation east of Antioch, Contra Costa County, California, comprised the largest riverine dune system in California. Biogeographically, this formation was unique because it supported a northern extension of plants and animals of desert, rather than coastal, affinities. Geologists believe that the dunes were relicts of the most recent glaciation of the Sierra Nevada, probably originating 10,000 to 25,000 years ago, with the sand derived from the supratidal floodplain of the combined Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. The ice age climate in the area is thought to have been cold but arid. Presumably summertime winds sweeping through the Carquinez Strait across the glacial-age floodplains would have picked up the fine-grained sand and redeposited it to the east and southeast, thus creating the dune fields of eastern Contra Costa County. -
Checklist of the Spheciform Wasps (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae & Sphecidae) of British Columbia
Checklist of the Spheciform Wasps (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae & Sphecidae) of British Columbia Chris Ratzlaff Spencer Entomological Collection, Beaty Biodiversity Museum, UBC, Vancouver, BC This checklist is a modified version of: Ratzlaff, C.R. 2015. Checklist of the spheciform wasps (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae & Sphecidae) of British Columbia. Journal of the Entomological Society of British Columbia 112:19-46 (available at http://journal.entsocbc.ca/index.php/journal/article/view/894/951). Photographs for almost all species are online in the Spencer Entomological Collection gallery (http://www.biodiversity.ubc.ca/entomology/). There are nine subfamilies of spheciform wasps in recorded from British Columbia, represented by 64 genera and 280 species. The majority of these are Crabronidae, with 241 species in 55 genera and five subfamilies. Sphecidae is represented by four subfamilies, with 39 species in nine genera. The following descriptions are general summaries for each of the subfamilies and include nesting habits and provisioning information. The Subfamilies of Crabronidae Astatinae !Three genera and 16 species of astatine wasps are found in British Columbia. All species of Astata, Diploplectron, and Dryudella are groundnesting and provision their nests with heteropterans (Bohart and Menke 1976). Males of Astata and Dryudella possess holoptic eyes and are often seen perching on sticks or rocks. Bembicinae Nineteen genera and 47 species of bembicine wasps are found in British Columbia. All species are groundnesting and most prefer habitats with sand or sandy soil, hence the common name of “sand wasps”. Four genera, Bembix, Microbembex, Steniolia and Stictiella, have been recorded nesting in aggregations (Bohart and Horning, Jr. 1971; Bohart and Gillaspy 1985). -

SCHMID-EGGER Abstract: Two large samples from Sicily and Malta are revised. They include 126 species from Sicily, 19 species of them are new for the fauna of Sicily: Astata gallica, Belomicrus italicus, Crabro peltarius bilbaoensis, Crossocerus podagricus, Gorytes procrustes, Lindenius albilabris, Lindenius laevis, Passaloecus pictus, Pemphredon austrica, Pemphredon lugubris, Rhopalum clavipes, Spilomena troglodytes, Stigmus solskyi, Synnevrus decemmaculatus, Tachysphex julliani, Trypoxylon kolazyi, Trypoxylon medium. Miscophus mavromoustakisi, found in Sicily, is also new for the fauna of Italy. A species of the genus Synnevrus is probably unknown to science. The total number of species in Sicily is 217 now. Zoogeographical aspects are discussed. Most of the recorded species are by origin from central or southern Europe. A few species have an eastern, resp. western Mediterranean distribution pattern. Introduction The fauna of Sphecidae from Sicily was never treated in a special publication. PAGLIANO (1990), in his catalogue of the Sphecidae from Italy, was the first who listed all published records of Sphecidae from Sicily. NEGRISOLO (1995) completed the listing in the ‘Checklist della specie della fauna Italiana’. He listed 186 species names, and some subspecies names from Sicily. Nevertheless, the fauna of Sicily is far from being completely known. I had the opportunity to examine two large collections from Sicily. Bernhard Merz collected in June 1999 Diptera at Sicily and Malta and took also many Aculeate with him. -

VEENENDAAL Pharmacological Laboratory, University of Amsterdam ABSTRACT. — Observations are reported on the behaviour of Philanthus triangulum (Fabricius) in the laboratory, digging its burrow and breeding cells, and provisioning the cells with honeybees. Comparisons with field data are given. INTRODUCTION The form of the burrows of the bee wolf, Philanthus triangulum (Fabricius), as well as the contents of the breeding cells have been studied by several investigators (Beekhuis van Till, 1935; Simon Thomas & Simon Thomas, 1972; Tinbergen, 1933; Vergne, 1935). However, only an incomplete picture could be formed because all these data were obtained by excavation of the burrows. A method developed in our laboratory now enables us to obtain more information about the construction of the burrow and the behaviour underground of this digger wasp (Simon Thomas & Veenendaal, 1974). MATERIAL AND METHODS Females of Philanthus triangulum were collected at Tienraÿ (Limburg, the Netherlands) in 1973 during the month of July. The insects were captured near their burrows. The underground behaviour of P. triangulum was observed in an observation cage (Michener Fig. 1. Observation cage. Two of the walls of the upper part (A) and its top are provided with brass wire gauze; two sides are of perpex (one with a cylindrical tricot sleeve). The lower part (C) consists of parallel glass sheets about 1 cm apart. This part is filled with sand. The upper and the lower part are connected by sloping glass sheets (B). -

The list includes 383 identified valid species in 54 genera and seven subfamilies: Astatinae (3 genera, 16 species), Bembicinae (10 genera, 86 species), Crabroninae (27 genera, 199 species), Dinetinae (1 genus, 3 species), Eremiaspheciinae (2 genera, 7 species), Pemphredoninae (7 genera, 14 species) and Philanthinae (4 genera, 58 species). Distributions, both on the Peninsula and extra-limital, are provided for each species and subspecies; 77 species (20%) are endemic to the Arabian Peninsula, as is one subspecies. Key words: Astatinae, Bembicinae, Crabroninae, Dinetinae, Eremiaspheciinae, Pemphredoninae, Philanthinae, distribution Crabronidae Latreille, 1802 The paraphyletic (or perhaps even polyphyletic) Crabronidae (Ohl & Bleidorn 2006; Lohrmann et al. 2008; Ohl & Spahn 2010; Peters et al. 2017) are a large family of primarily solitary wasps that are worldwide in distribution, especially in arid and semi-arid areas (Bohart & Menke 1976; Schmid-Egger 2011). It currently includes 9009 species in 248 genera and eight subfamilies (Pulawski 2019). Crabronidae were formerly treated as several sub- families within the family Sphecidae (s.l.) (superfamily “Sphecoidea”), which is now divided into four families, Ampulicidae, Crabronidae, Heterogynaidae and Sphecidae (s.s.), together with the bees forming the superfamily Apoidea (Hanson & Menke 2006; Pulawski 2019).
