Bill Turner Trophy 07 Girls Bill Turner Trophy 08 Girls 18/3/08 8:52 AM Page 1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Welcome to the eighteenth Bill Turner Trophy series. The competition continues to grow in this the ninth year under the banner of Northern NSW Schools Soccer Association. This year we again have entries from Cairns down the eastern seaboard to Bendigo and out as far as Dubbo. The pilot competition in Western Australia remains in recess. Last year’s final saw Hunter Sports High successfully defend their title, for the third year in a row. The final against arch rivals The Hills Sports was a nailbiter and received good coverage on the NBN 3 news. It was also very pleasing to see Narooma and Bendigo’s Flora Hill have good runs in the competition. Our ‘Code of Behaviour’ appears again in this year’s handbook. We encourage readers to photocopy the document for distribution. Also there have been a number of very important administrative and rule changes. Carefully read and check all the rules in the handbook. In addition there have been changes in areas to allow for expansion in Queensland. Please check which area your school is now in and the path you need to follow from the last 32 of the competition. Personally I would like to commend the efforts of our dedicated Executive. They have worked tirelessly over the recent years to keep the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy going strongly, despite having no major sponsor. Enjoy the season. We again seek your continued moral and financial support this season and would like to invite you to attend, if possible, the final series on September 9th and 10th. Lindsay Hewison President EVERY SOCCER BODY AND EVERY PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS LISTED IN OUR HANDBOOK CONTRIBUTES GREATLY TO THE RUNNING OF OUR COMPETITIONS. Football’s massive junior base has long been intertwined with school football and the first serious football outlet for many young players is undoubtedly as a representative of the school team. Both the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy have long been an integral part of Australian football’s junior development structure, and, like all members and contributors to the Australian football family, have undeniably played a major role in the success of recent years. Indeed the two tournaments have seen the participation of a number of current Qantas Socceroos and Qantas Matildas who competed in the tournament during their formative years. It is a credit to the Executive Members, led by Patron Bill Turner and President Lindsay Hewison that the competition continues to thrive and strengthen. Thanks to the untiring efforts of both Bill and Lindsay, as well as countless other volunteers, the competition has grown from a humble Hunter region competition to the current structure featuring over 450 schools across a number of states. Undoubtedly the tournament has outstripped all expectations since it’s beginning over a quarter of a century ago. It would also be remiss not to acknowledge the efforts of the State Managers, Area Managers, coaches, principals plus referees, parents and the numerous volunteers. The longevity and success of the cup is a testament to the countless hours donated by all concerned as they uphold the rules and code of behaviour. Finally and perhaps most importantly of all, best wishes to those school students who will be competing in 2008. Enjoy every moment of your participation and remember that you are not only ambassadors for your school and the competition, but also for our great code in Australia. BEN BUCKLEY CHIEF EXECUTIVE FOOTBALL FEDERATION AUSTRALIA Northern NSW Football is proud to continue its association with the Bill Turner Cup – an association that has been in place since the competition’s inception in 1979.

  • To View the Private Academy Review
2 | Review in to Private Academies and External Providers “In sunny Sydney, parents of football daft kids are spoiled for choice when it comes to academies. Much like the unseemly scramble for coveted spots at overpriced private schools, football academies in Sydney vie for the affluent and deluded dollar, fluttering their eyelashes and promising all kinds of untold riches, virtually mapping out the yellow brick road to soccer related success. All of which of course is complete and utter bollocks. Unlike elsewhere in the world the word ‘Academy’ means nothing here: it's a marketing label, with connotations that suggest elitism (true in the dollar sense, but nothing else), conjuring up images of well drilled kids starting off on the road to professional footballing careers. However unlike in the UK and elsewhere there are no scouts, no trials, no obstacles for entry into these elite training schools on silly things like actual footballing talent … no obstacles at all …… except (kerching!) the entry fee!” Craig Allan, “That’s not an Academy…. This is an Academy!” www.sunburntsoccer.com 3 | Review in to Private Academies and External Providers 4 | Review in to Private Academies and External Providers Acknowledgments The author would like to thank the following who contributed to this Review: The Board and Staff of Football NSW Staff of Football Federation Australia and its Member Federations Member Associations and their General Managers Professional Footballers Australia, Chief Executive Officer, John Didulica Football Coaches Australia
