The site was close to where they had fallen in 1916 during one of the bloodiest battles of World War I. In 2010, on the ninety-fourth anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles, the last of these soldiers was finally given a proper burial at a new military cemetery in France. It's all pomp and circumstance as President Wilson signs the Selective Service Act into law. And need the debate about an all volunteer army. Instead, it's going to be a combination of volunteer and conscripted army. All men between the ages of 21 and 30 will have to register for the draft by June 5th. There's still a big question about who's going to head this huge new army. Wilson also answers that question today. And it's a big fat no to Teddy Roosevelt's plan to raise a division of volunteer troops which he, of course, would lead to Europe. Some thinK he probably misses the glory days of the Rough Riders pounding it out in Cuba. It's also a big no to General Leonard Wood, the former U.S.

Seitz, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 This dissertation uncovers the processes of negotiation between private citizens, President Woodrow Wilson’s administration, the War Department, and the Commission of Fine Arts that led to the establishment and final visual presentation of the United States permanent World War I cemeteries in Europe (sites that are still frequented by tens of thousands of international visitors each year). It employs archival research and the analysis of newspapers and photographs to recover the voices of the many stakeholders involved in the cemeteries’ foundation. Whereas previous studies have attempted to understand American World War I commemoration practices by focusing on postwar rituals of remembrance alone, my study contextualizes and explains postwar commemoration by analyzing the political ideologies, public rhetoric, and material realities of the war years (1914-1918)—ideologies, rhetoric, and material realities that shaped official and vernacular projects of memory after the Armistice.

    ED: This is BackStory. I'm Ed Ayers. NEWSREEL: The United States entered World War I on April 6, 1917-- ED: In 1917, Americans were late arrivals to the Great War. Fighting had raged in Europe for three lo ngyears. American doughboys, as it turned out, would only be involved in the war for 18 more m onths. Butwhen the smoke cleared, and a new world emerged, America was a nation transformed. Today on the show, World War I's long reach through American history. We'll look at the way th e conflictshaped civil liberties-- GEOFFREY STONE: It was not until World War I that the Supreme Court actually got involved ininterpreting the First Amendment. ED: And we'll also consider what happened when military service by African Americans failed to wi nthem the respect they deserved.   • Of Australia's First Woman Sculptor and Her War Memorials
    In Memoriam: World War I memorials by the Australian sculptor Margaret Baskerville (1861-1930). Margaret A. Rose, FAHA, FRHistS Margaret Francis Ellen (“Nell”) Baskerville was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1861 and was one of the first Australian-born women artists to become a professional sculptor. This brief illustrated account of her war memorials is based on my study of her work and that of her husband and fellow sculptor C. Douglas Richardson, which was published for the Brighton (now Bayside) City Council collection of their paintings and sculpture under the title Victorian Artists. Margaret Baskerville (1861-1930) and C. Douglas Richardson (1853-1932) in 1988. Several memorials to the fallen were commissioned and completed by sculptors as well as by stonemasons in Australia in the aftermath of the “Great War”. Many are recorded, and some are illustrated, in the numerous editions of Sacred Places: War Memorials in the Australian Landscape by K.S. Inglis, assisted by Jan Brazier, of 1998, as well as – more recently – on websites such as those for the “Monument Australia” and “Victorian Heritage” databases. As Inglis has noted, the majority of the war memorials unveiled in the public spaces of Australian towns following World War I had been for – and had illustrated – the male soldiers who had fought and fallen in battle. Amongst the memorials built and unveiled following World War I were, however, also two by the Australian sculptor Margaret Baskerville (1861-1930) for the British nurse Edith Louisa Cavell. Cavell (born in Norfolk, England in 1865) had trained as a nurse in London under a friend of Florence Nightingale (Matron Eva Luckes), had taken up work in Belgium and been executed there at dawn on 12 October 1915 by order of the German Military Governor of Brussels for having assisted in the escape of allied soldiers, and despite the fact that she had tended the wounded of both sides.
