Schuld is the first Gatorade Arizona Softball Player of the Year to be chosen from Pinnacle High School. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Schuld as Arizona’s best high school softball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year award announced in June, Schuld joins an elite alumni association of past state softball award-winners, including Catherine Osterman (2000-01, Cy Spring High School, Texas), Kelsey Stewart (2009-10, Arkansas City High School, Kan.), Carley Hoover (2012-13 D.W. Daniel High School, S.C.), Jenna Lilley (2012-13, Hoover High School, Ohio), Morgan Zerkle (2012-13 Cabell Midland High School, W. Va.), and Rachel Garcia (2014-15, Highland High School, Calif.). The state’s returning Gatorade Player of the Year, the 5-foot-4 senior right-handed pitcher led the Pioneers to a 30-6 record and the Conference 6A state championship this past season. Schuld compiled an 11-1 record in the circle with a 0.74 earned run average and 151 strikeouts against just six walks in 76 innings pitched.

    WOMEN’S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES *Records Through 2019 Championship Tournament HISTORY WCWS SITE HISTORY The championship was held in Omaha, Nebraska, from 1982 through 1987; in Sunnyvale, California, from 1988-1989; and in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, from 1990 through 1995. Columbus, Georgia, played host to the WCWS in 1996. The championship has been in Oklahoma City since 1997.” BRACKET HISTORY 1981 NCAA Executive Committee approved a 16-team bracket. 1982 First Division I Women’s Softball Championship; sponsorship of Division I women’s softball totals 143 teams. 1988 Tournament expanded to 20 teams. 1994 Tournament expanded to 32 teams; sponsorship of Division I women’s softball reaches 192 teams. 1997 Top eight teams seeded at beginning of tournament. No. 1 through No. 8 seeds selected to different regional sites. 1999 Championship bracket expanded to 48 teams. 2003 Championship bracket expanded to 64 teams. Regional sites selected two weeks prior to bracket announcement for first time. 2004 Increase in seeds from 8 to 16. 2005 Championship expanded from two weekends to three weekends. Regionals were played at 16 campus sites, and eight super regionals were played Memorial Day weekend, featuring two teams at each site in a best-of-three series. WCWS Championship Finals consisted of best-of-three series. 2014 The number of automatic qualifications increased from 31 to 32 with the addition of the American Athletic Conference. The West Coast Conference also earned a bid and replaced the Pacific Coast Softball Conference. 2017 Super Regionals moved to a three-day format. Previously, the Super Regional games were conducted over a two-day period, with the third if necessary game played as a part of a doubleheader on the second day.

Four years prior to the start of the NCAA, UCLA softball brought home its fi rst national championship in 1978 under the umbrella of the Association of May 4 beat Nevada, 1-0 (9 inn.) Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). After recording just 44 victories in their fi rst three years of existence, the Bruins went 31-3 in 1978, starting and fi n ishing the season strong with victories in 14 of their fi rst 15 and 17 of their last 18. During the regular season, UCLA posted a 22-2 record, outscoring its May 4 beat Sacramento State, 1-0 (12 inn.) opponents 101-17. May 5 beat Chico State, 1-0 In her last season in her #6 UCLA uniform, future Hall of Fame coach Sue Enquist led the Bruins in hitting with a .391 batting average. The All-American also May 6 lost to Cal Poly Pomona, 6-5 fi n ished fi rst on the squad with seven doubles and tied for the team lead with two home runs.
