Who inspired your interest in history? Here’s a chance to pay it forward: Ohio History Day is an academic program for students in grades 4–12 that promotes critical thinking and analysis. With 10 regional contests and a statewide finale, we depend on lots of volunteer judges. The 2018 competitions are in Chillicothe, Bowling Green, Fremont, Cleveland, Delaware, Piqua, Cincinnati, Zanesville and Youngstown. If you’d be willing to share a Saturday in March or April to judge students’ projects or just help things run smoothly, we’d love to hear from you. You don’t have to be a teacher or historian. We’ll give you all the tools you need. Willing to give it a try? Register or learn more at ohiohistoryday.org or contact Ice for Everybody Shoshanna Gross at sgross@ ohiohistory.org or 614.297.2526.

“Dont Give Up the Ship” The Ohio History Connection and local partner Ottawa County Historical Society have completed another Ohio History Barn, this one commemorating the victory of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry over the British in the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie. Artist Scott Hagen worked on a scaffold high above the ground to paint the likeness of Perry, which is accompanied by an image of Perry’s famous battle flag, reading “Dont Give Up the Ship” (Perry’s actual flag reads “Dont,” not “Don’t). The barn is located in Ottawa County, which is where the Battle of Lake Erie took place. You’ll find it on State Route 105, about a mile west of Oak Harbor.
