Maple Sugar Bowl Date: August 6, 2011 8 The Bektash News I would also like to thank Noble Ron Perry for his hard work on the calen- dar raffle. Look in next month's issue for a list of the winners.

At the spring NSA meeting Bektash drew the second position for the pa- rade in Hyannis, MA on August 27th. The parade route is about 1.3 miles and completely level. Illustrious Past Potentate Don March and Recorder Joel Weinstein will organize some enjoyable trip packages for the field days. Watch for the details.

Also, we held our bingo appreciation din- ner on the 20th. We can't thank our bingo Yours in Nobility, workers enough for their hard work and Richard D Perry, devotion in raising money for Bektash. A Potentate special note of thanks to Chief Rabban, Bob St Jacques, he was chosen as the bingo worker of the year. We also pre- sented Lady Barbara Brown with a certifi- cate of appreciate for all her hard work on behalf of Bektash bingo.

April 2011 9 Membership Drive

Nobles of Bektash Shrine as part of our membership drive all of the elected and appointed Divan members will be visiting all of the Blue Lodges throughout in the next three months.

I have listed the names of the divan members along with a list of the blue lodges that they are assigned to visit (see page 34). It would be very supportive of this drive if you would find the name of the divan member who will be visiting your lodge. It would then be up to you to call him and find out what day he intends to visit your lodge so that you can show your support by attending the meeting as well. It would be of great help if two members of each lodge gave their support to the visiting divan member.

Keeping the Blue Lodges informed of our Shrine activities should help us in gaining new members.

Let’s all work together and watch Bekatsh Shrine grow!

Fraternally Yours,

Richard D Perry, Potentate

We have decided to cancel the Bektash Pictorial Directory that was announced in last month's Bektash News due to logistical problems. No one should have been contacted as of yet where this was a new program. If you have we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. If you are called please explain to the caller that the program has been cancelled by Ill. Richard Perry, Potentate. Thanks for your understanding.

We still have a few Units and Clubs that have not sent in their required financial statements to the Recorder's Office. They were due the end of February. The reports that are still due are from the Cycle Patrol, Legion of Honor, Patrol C, Provost Guard, Shrine (Temple) Guard, Simadi Shrine Club and the White Mountain Shrine Club. They were due in February. No parade or fundraising permits will be issued by the Potentate until we have received the reports. These reports are required by Imperial and must be attached to the submitted Bektash Financial Statement. Thanks for your cooperation.

Spring is just around the corner. We are looking for volunteers to help around the Shrine Center with many small projects, inside and out. Please give me a call at 603-566-9972 or Email me for a project list.

We thank those that have donated to the Bektash News Boosters. Your donations help lower our preparation and printing expenses. If you have not donated we would like you to consider doing it soon. Only with your help can we continue distributing this helpful and timely guide on what is happening in our New Hampshire Shrine World.

Please don't forget to get those aluminum tabs into the Bektash Office. They have been slow coming in during the winter months. Now that spring is here and you are all out and about please drop them off at your earliest convenience. Thanks for your help and cooperation.

Please take notice that we will have a special election for an Oriental Guide at the Spring Ceremonial. The election is a result of changes in the Divan Line due to filling the High Priest and Prophet position on the Stated Meeting on March 21st.

I recently attended the Recorder's Seminar in Tamps, FL. I will summarize the two key issues that I took away. One is membership; the other is the operation of our hospitals. Simply said is that we have a good Membership Development Pro- gram in place. It is up to all Shriners to make it happen. With regard to the hos- pitals as stated by Ill. Sir Doug Maxwell, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Helping more Children will continue to be our utmost goal and as Shrin- ers…"We will Accomplish our Mission".

(Left to right): Richard Melvin, Bektash Treasurer, Miss Strafford, Anthony Bravo, IHOP manager, Ill. Richard Perry.

Tuesday, March 1 was National Pancake Day. To celebrate, participating IHOP restaurants are offering free small stacks of pancakes to customers. In return, customers are asked if they would like to make a donation to the restaurant's charity. Shriners Hospitals for Children has been designated as the charity of choice for select IHOP locations.

I had the opportunity to go the Bedford IHOP along with my wife and Richard Melvin the treasurer of Bektash. They treated us very well and were receiving a lot of donations while we were there. I had the chance to speak with some of the customers who had been asking questions about Shriners.

I thanked them for their support and have sent an email to the IHOP headquarters thanking them as well.

FORM TO ORDER SHRINE MAPLE SUGAR BOWL PAGES IN ADVERTISING/PROGRAM BOOKLET April 2011 _ __ _ 21 THANK YOU NOBLES

Each year the dues bills provide an opportunity for the Nobles to add an extra payment directed to the Shriners Hospitals. Noble Wilfred Ives took a ride on the Black Camel on February 19, 2011. He was a 38 year member of the Drum Corps. He joined our ranks in 1973 and served as a loyal member until health reasons took him off the street. He will be sincerely missed. A donation to the 100 million dollar club will be made in his honor.

The first meeting of the year was held at practice on Monday, March 7. Our Leader Ron Perry stated that we have contracted for the Henniker, Plais- tow, Andover and Loudon parades. We will not be doing the Londonderry parade as it falls on the same day as Loudon and Loudon called first.

Further discussion is to take place regarding the Portsmouth Parade and an appearance on the same day at a Fisher Cats Game. Logistics and travel time being the question. The date is June 26th.

We will not be marching in Gilford this year as it is the same weekend as the Northeast in Hyannis , Mass on August 27th. Details of this trip will be dis- closed to us at our next practice on March 28th.

Remember we practice on the 1st and 4th Mondays. March 28, April 4th and 25th. See you there !

Fraternally, Ron Parsons, Secretary

Nobles - MARK THIS DATE -

On Tuesday, May 24th Bektash Shrine and the White Mountain Shrine Club will hold an informational forum at the Mount Cabot Motel, Route 2, Lancaster, NH. The social hour will begin at 5:30 PM with a buffet dinner at 6:30 PM. The cost will be $15.00 per person (subject to change).

This forum is open to all Shriners, potential Shriners and their ladies. We will make a concretive effort to reach all Shriners north of the notches to attend this forum, but all Shriners are welcome to attend.

The purpose of this forum will be your opportunity to ask questions about what the divan is doing to promote Shrinedom. The blue lodge visitations should be completed by then and hopefully we will have some good feed- back on promoting shrine activities up north.

We already have some new ideas for a new shrine unit and any other sug- gestions would be appreciated. We will also update everyone on the new membership drive and shrine functions.

This article will be updated in the May issue of the Bektash News, but please save the date MAY 24th.

Hope this finds everyone enjoying the end to the winter months and the sight of robins should be arriving which must mean black flies can't be too far behind. The Bektash clowns are busy preparing for another busy year of parading and putting smiles on the faces of both young and old.

In January several of us clowns attended the annual clown college in Plymouth MA. It was an enjoyable time of classes and networking with the various units from as far away as Tampa FL. and PA. Most likely the enjoyable part was the 9:30 trek across the parking lot to Peaceful Meadows for our ice cream fix. At the closing ceremonies the unit was able to present a check for $2000.00 to the sneaker fund. A special thanks to everyone who made this donation possible

The clowns have already started clowning with us arriving at the NH Camping show in Milford Ma on March 5&6 to make balloons and stickers for all the children in attendance, On March 27 we paraded down the Elm Street of Manchester for the annual St Patties parade. There was even a sighting that our Ill. Pote was there.

On Saturday April 30 will be our 2nd annual Hobo dinner at the Temple. The fes- tivities will begin around 5:00 with a masterful dinner prepared and served by the clowns. There will be games for both adults and the children. We will have a 50/50 raffle along with some skits. I can also imagine that there will be balloons flying thru the air. Please try to make an attempt to attend and tickets can be pur- chased thru any of the clowns or by calling the temple.

It is nice to read in the Bektash News that the Divan is going out and speaking to all the Blue lodges in the state. Ill Rick spoke at Franklin Lodge #6 on the 14th in Lebanon and delivered a message that would want everyone to be a Shriner.

In closing the Bektash clowns want to thank everyone who made 2010 a great year for us in helping the hospitals and hope 2011 will be as good. If any of you new nobles are interested in joining the clown unit we meet the first Tuesday of the month with dinner at Xtra cheese at 6:00 and meeting to follow at 7:00 at the tem- ple. Hope to see you along the parade routes or at the 2nd annual Hobo dinner.

Time to dust off those parade duds and polish up the musical instruments and practice real hard so that you will sound good when the parades start. The O-B does not have a complete parade list yet but hopefully will have one soon. I am sure they will have a busy season when it starts.

As I write this a lot the band members are not back for the summer but there will be plenty for them to do when they arrive. Activity in the Masonic Blue Lodges is picking up although some of the Lodges are busy all year. Noble Dave Hackler and I will be visiting all of the Lodges in the 3rd. Masonic District this spring pro- moting the Shrine and meeting new Masons and hopefully future Shriners. It is always a pleasure to visit other Lodges.

I have the pleasure of showing a picture of two great Masons and who are also great Shriners.

On the left is Noble Phil Beaton and on the right is Noble ILL. Victor A. Elder PP of Bektash Shrine in the year 1986. They are both life members of The Bektash Oriental Band. Although they are not active they still support the Band and Bek- tash Shrine. We wish both the best.

It seems good to see the ice and snow melt away. Think Spring. Thats all for now.

NORTHEAST SHRINE ASSOCIATION FIELD DAYS

MARK YOUR CALENDAR’S August 25-27, 2011 Hyannis Mass. on Sunny Olde Cape Cod

Dear Nobles & Ladies:

It's not too soon to start thinking about going to beautiful Cape Cod to celebrate the Northeast Shrine Field Days. Our host, Aleppo Shriners have a wonderful weekend planned with something for everybody to enjoy.

Cape Cod is a beautiful tourist area. The cape is probably best known as "The Sum- mer home of President John F. Kennedy". In Hyannis they have the Kennedy Me- morial and their own Kennedy Museum. It is recommended that you see both. They are very impressive sites.

They also have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world throughout the Cape.

If you love to camp, there are several campgrounds available throughout the Cape.

Cape Cod is a 65-mile-long peninsula linked to the mainland by two bridges, the Sagamore Bridge and the Bourne Bridge, which span the Cape Cod Canal.

Surrounded by water of all four sides, Cape Cod has 559.6 miles of magnificent coastal scenery and pristine beaches, along with more than 365 freshwater lakes and kettle ponds.

Take a Ferry from Hyannis to tour Nantucket Sound or to visit the islands of Nan- tucket or Martha's Vineyard.

For more information go to the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce web site: www.capecodchamber.org

There are programs, tours, shopping, wonderful eating places and of course good old Shrine comraderie. In the forthcoming Bektash News we will have a complete schedule of events including information on housing, transportation and camping.

The Headquarters Hotel, Cape Codder Resort, will be the center of the activities for this weekend with most hotels within a short drive. You will find excellent food and enter- tainment on Cape Cod along with various tours, beautiful beaches and gorgeous land- scapes. Hyannis is a very friendly city where you can feel safe walking the streets and water-front at any time. There is a full schedule of events planned for all. We hope eve- ryone that attends enjoys their trip to Cape Cod. You do not want to miss this one!

Seven Reasons Why You Should Want To Become A Shriner 1. You have an opportunity to share in the worlds greatest philanthropy. Nineteen Shriners Hospitals for Children with orthopedic needs and three Hospitals for Burned Children stand as a monument to the love and devotion we have for our fellow man who is less fortunate. You will be automatically sharing with this work of God. 2. You will be joining with the highest caliber of successful individuals in North Amer- ica. You will make fine contacts and new friends in the world’s greatest fraternity. 3. You will have an extra opportunity to assist with all the prerequisite degrees. 4. It gives you a greater incentive to higher thoughts and nobler deeds. 5. You will be able to share hours of pleasure with men of the craft. 6. Over 300,000 materially helped orthopediacally impaired and burned children, plus millions of others will admire you for your deeds and generosity. 7. A Mason is a man who believes in God and practices that belief. A Mason is a man who believes in brotherly love and practices his belief. A Mason is a man who uses the symbols of the builder to set for himself and his Brethren a code of life which refines his thoughts. A Shriner is a Mason employing all the virtues and characteristics just mentioned. The Shrine stands for all of Masonry and for wholesomeness in life. It stands for letting in the sunshine on discouragement, grief and woe and it would substitute hope for despair. The Shrine is made up of the finest type of man in every community, men who are glad to know, men who travel by preference along the sunny side of the street and who play a fair game all the time. They sow in kindness to reap in friendship. Mem- bership in the Shrine gives us the right to wear its emblem and to participate in its good works as well as its pleasures. The general public identifies Shriners by their red Fez, gorgeous costumes and parades. However, behind their fun and frolic is a burning desire to be of help to ortho- pediacally impaired and burned children, regardless of race, creed or color. Every Mason should have a desire to become a member of the Shrine, and a member of the worlds greatest Philanthropy: “Shriners Hospitals for Children”.

A New Shriners Hospital Policy

What this is a new era for Shriners Hospitals for Children, we have not changed our mission or the care we provide to kids. What has changed is the way we talk about how care is provided at Shriners Hospitals for Chil- dren.

♦ Name change to “Shriners International” ♦ We can no longer use the terms “free”, “no charge” or “no cost” when referring to care provided in our hospitals. We have replaced those terms with this phrase: We provide care “regardless of the patients’ ability to pay.”

All old brochures related to these two areas should be returned Bektash Shrine Center. We are presently beginning to use those brochures which have already been updated. Eventually all of the brochures will be redone. With the change in our name and the advent of third party pay activities, we must clean up our language and verbiage. Please return those to the Shrine Center and the brochures will be recycled. In this fashion no danger exists where the old forms may be used by accident. April 2011 47 BEKTASH MEMORY WALK
