This was the same week- end as the Valentine's Dance so we made a very quick trip down and back. A big thanks to Noble Marshal Dan and Lady Shelly Perry for a great time. They were assisted by 2nd Ceremonial Mas- ter, Mick Pinard and Lady Susan. Heck my knees are still sore from dancing.

The Legion of Honor Annual Meeting was held on the 20th and we finished the month off with the visitation to Melha Shriners and the seminar at the Spring- field Hospital. Throw in a trip each month to the Montreal Hospital, Bingo on Thursday nights, Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl meetings and a finance meeting. POTENTATE “2011” Other than that it was a quiet month. Nobles of Bektash Shrine as part of our membership drive all of the elected and appointed Divan members will be visiting all of the Blue Lodges throughout in the next three months.

I have listed the names of the divan members along with a list of the blue lodges that they are assigned to visit (see page 34). It would be very supportive of this drive if you would find the name of the divan member who will be visiting your lodge. It would then be up to you to call him and find out what day he intends to visit your lodge so that you can show your support by attending the meeting as well. It would be of great help if two members of each lodge gave their support to the visiting divan member.

Keeping the Blue Lodges informed of our Shrine activities should help us in gaining new members.

Let’s all work together and watch Bekatsh Shrine grow!

Fraternally Yours,

Richard D Perry, Potentate

BINGO WORKERS WANTED FOR SUNDAY AND THURSDAY

By popular demand by our Bingo Players and the recent closing of another Bingo Hall in Concord, we are adding Sunday Afternoon Bingo. We will continue our Thursday Bingo in the evening as we have successfully done for many years.

Because of this change Bektash is looking for part-time and full- time volunteer Bingo Workers for most positions on Sunday after- noons and Thursday evenings. We are sure that we have a fun po- sition for you. Come and join your fellow Shriners and their La- dies to help support our biggest fundraiser.

Please contact either Mark Simard, Bingo Chairman at 603-365-9937 or the Bektash Office at 603-225-5372 for information. 10 The Bektash News BEKTASH 2011 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

In December I sent out the required financial statements to the Bektash Units and Clubs. There are only a few that have not responded. I thank those that sent the report in on time as requested. The other reports not received could be due to the proper officer not receiving the report forms. I suspect this may have occurred due to the changes of officers of our indi- vidual Units and Clubs. If you have not received the forms please let me know as soon as possible. They were due last month. No parade or fund- raising permits will be issued by the Potentate until we have received the reports. These reports are required by Imperial and must be attached to the submitted Bektash Financial Statement. Thanks for your cooperation.

Dues are coming in slowly. Thanks to those that have paid on time. Please check your card. All Shriners must have a 2011 card to participate in most Bektash and Shrine International functions. If you are not sure of your status please give me or the office a call. We can help.

We have a rich history in our Shrine Center starting in 1905 and we need to move forward making more of this history so that next 100 years reflect the same dedication and commitment for the betterment of Shrinedom.

Membership is our survival. We have a great resurgence of membership in our Blue Lodges where high tech, younger Masons are joining. When you see them let them know about all the fun and fellowship that can be had by joining Bektash. Tell them how we help our kids. You will find when you tell them about the Shrine how little they know what we do. Communica- tion is key. Let's make sure we tap into this great new resource of Master Masons.

In the future please read the Bektash News, cover to cover; support your Units, Shrine Clubs and the Shrine Center. Make sure to participate in all the events and functions! If you have not you will never know what you are missing. There are a lot of Bektash Shriners and their Ladies working hard for you. When you take part you will see a big smile on their faces knowing that all their hard work is not in vain. Thanks for joining in!

On Tuesday, May 24th Bektash Shrine and the White Moun- tain Shrine Club will hold an informational forum at the Mount Cabot Motel, Route 2, Lancaster, NH. The social hour will begin at 5:30 PM with a buffet dinner at 6:30 PM. The cost will be $15.00 per person (subject to change).

We already have some new ideas for a new shrine unit and any other suggestions would be appreciated. We will also update everyone on the new membership drive and shrine functions.

Here we are into March already. Do you realize that at the end of this month we will have used up a quarter of 2011? Scary is it not? Time sure flies when you are having fun. (shoveling snow). By the time you read this I hope the snow is mostly gone.

At least that is what Oriental Band President Ernie Linders hopes for as he is chomping at the bit to get the band into practice for the upcoming season. We thank him for taking the reins as band President this year. Ernie says we still need more new members. The Installation of Unit and Club officers went very well. It was well planned and well attended. ILL. Potentate Richard Perry did a great job of putting this event on. President Ernie Linders along with help from Nobles Mark Wallace, Willard Carpenter, and Howard Lyman put on a fine display of informational material and pictures of the band that goes back to 1948. So you can see that there is a lot of Shrine History in this unit. A big thank you for a job well done.

At our last meeting in 2010 three band members were presented with awards of appreciation for their many years of service and contributions To The Bektash Oriental Band and Shrinedome. Presenting the honors was 2010 Band President, Willard C. "Doc" Carpenter to Nobles Roy Hackler, Phil Beaton and Ernie Conides. They represent many years of marching on the streets to help the Kids at the Shrine Hospitals.

It seems like a lot of Shriners have been sick this winter and the Oriental Band wish's all a speedy recovery.

Yours in The Faith, Walt Young

We currently have members from Aleppo, Bektash and Kora Shrine Centers and would welcome newcomers. Membership dues are reasonable ($5.00 per year).

Our annual meeting and camping weekend will be held on June 3-5, 2011, at Bayley's Camping Resort in Scarborough, . We also hope to plan a camping weekend to coincide with the Northeast Shrine Days to be held in September on Cape Cod.

Join us for good fellowship, good food and good times around the campfire.

Seven Reasons Why You Should Want To Become A Shriner 1. You have an opportunity to share in the worlds greatest philanthropy. Nineteen Shriners Hospitals for Children with orthopedic needs and three Hospitals for Burned Children stand as a monument to the love and devotion we have for our fellow man who is less fortunate. You will be automatically sharing with this work of God. 2. You will be joining with the highest caliber of successful individuals in North Amer- ica. You will make fine contacts and new friends in the world’s greatest fraternity. 3. You will have an extra opportunity to assist with all the prerequisite degrees. 4. It gives you a greater incentive to higher thoughts and nobler deeds. 5. You will be able to share hours of pleasure with men of the craft. 6. Over 300,000 materially helped orthopediacally impaired and burned children, plus millions of others will admire you for your deeds and generosity. 7. Your “Red Fez” will tell the world that you are a Master Mason, dedicated to the high principles of our craft.

A Mason is a man who believes in God and practices that belief. A Mason is a man who believes in brotherly love and practices his belief. A Mason is a man who uses the symbols of the builder to set for himself and his Brethren a code of life which refines his thoughts. A Shriner is a Mason employing all the virtues and characteristics just mentioned. The Shrine stands for all of Masonry and for wholesomeness in life. It stands for letting in the sunshine on discouragement, grief and woe and it would substitute hope for despair. The Shrine is made up of the finest type of man in every community, men who are glad to know, men who travel by preference along the sunny side of the street and who play a fair game all the time. They sow in kindness to reap in friendship. Mem- bership in the Shrine gives us the right to wear its emblem and to participate in its good works as well as its pleasures. The general public identifies Shriners by their red Fez, gorgeous costumes and parades. However, behind their fun and frolic is a burning desire to be of help to ortho- pediacally impaired and burned children, regardless of race, creed or color. Every Mason should have a desire to become a member of the Shrine, and a member of the worlds greatest Philanthropy: “Shriners Hospitals for Children”.

A New Shriners Hospital Policy

What this is a new era for Shriners Hospitals for Children, we have not changed our mission or the care we provide to kids. What has changed is the way we talk about how care is provided at Shriners Hospitals for Chil- dren.

♦ Name change to “Shriners International” ♦ We can no longer use the terms “free”, “no charge” or “no cost” when referring to care provided in our hospitals. We have replaced those terms with this phrase: We provide care “regardless of the patients’ ability to pay.”

All old brochures related to these two areas should be returned Bektash Shrine Center. We are presently beginning to use those brochures which have already been updated. Eventually all of the brochures will be redone. With the change in our name and the advent of third party pay activities, we must clean up our language and verbiage. Please return those to the Shrine Center and the brochures will be recycled. In this fashion no danger exists where the old forms may be used by accident. 48 __ _ The Bektash News March 2011 49 REMEMBER!
