ITDG has since grown into an international development agency with its head office in UK and regional offices in East Africa, South Asia, South America and Southern Africa. It also has country offices in Bangladesh, Nepal and Sudan. ITDG’s work is driven by its vision of “a world free of poverty and injustice in which technology is used for the benefit of all”. ITDG’s mission is “to help eradicate poverty in developing countries through the development and use of technology by demonstrating results, sharing knowledge and influencing others”. ITDG’s development is guided by the following core principles; putting people first; working in partnership, respect for diversity and a concern for future generations. Intermediate Technology Development Group-Eastern Africa (ITDG- EA) is a regional office of ITDG. The organization works towards fulfilling its mission in Eastern Africa by reducing vulnerability, increasing services to the people, making markets work for poor producers and introducing new technologies. Conflict resolution and cross-border harmonization is an integral component of the group’s aim of reducing vulnerability among poor people especially the pastoral communities in the Greater Horn of Africa. Through the Conflict Management Project, the agency is implementing peace programmes in Northern Kenya (Turkana, Marsabit, and Samburu) and works through partners in West Pokot, Marakwet, Moyale, Mandera and Wajir Districts. In conjunction with partners, ITDG-EA is implementing cross-border activities in Southern Ethiopia (Omo region), Southern Sudan, Eastern Uganda (Karamoja cluster) and Western Somalia. i Acknowledgements This publication is a result of a significant and painstaking commitment by a number of individuals and organizations. It can be a disagreement over the use of natural resources such as water, pasture and grazing land or disputes over ownership of livestock, land or even domestic quarrels . This study focuses on the destructive conflicts within and without the four pastoralists’ communities under question. Cattle rustling is a thematic type of conflict that features promptly in this study. It represents the struggle among the pastoralists over the possession of cattle,

    PROFILES OF ATTRACTION SITES-ELGEYO MARAKWET. Tourist attractions in Elgeyo Marakwet County include Sports Tourism, Rivers, A national reserve, waterfalls and the hills and escarpments. Rimoi National Reserve The National Reserve is a protected area in the kerio valley along the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. The 66 square kilometers (25sq mi) reserve was created in 1983 and is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service. The isolated Kerio Valley lies between the Cherangani Hills and the Tugen Hills with the Elgeyo Escarpment rising more than 1,830 meters (6,000ft) above the valley in places. The valley is 4,000 feet (1,200m) deep. It has semi-tropical vegetation on the slopes, while the floor of the valley is covered by dry thorn bush. The most comfortable time of the year is in July and August when the rains have ended and the temperatures are not excessive. The reserve is on the west side of the Kerio River, while the Lake Kamnarok National Reserve is on the east side. The reserve has beautiful scenery, prolific birdlife and camping site in the bush beside Lake Kamnarok. Gazzement of the conservation area was done to protect wildlife from rampant poaching which was going on at the time. A fence was also put up to address human wildlife conflicts. It provides unique geological scenery & biodiversity and is one of the few protected areas within the spectacular Kerio Valley. The main attraction is the groups of elephants, Culture and scenery of the Kerio valley. The Reserve has earth and gravel road network which make for an adventurous outing.

The study area is located in Marakwet district in western Kenya and the district has one of the largest remaining natural forests in the country. At the same time, the area is experiencing ongoing illegal deforestation. The aim of the study was to investigate and map the deforestation in the study area during the 23 years period from 1986 to 2009 by using satellite data.

Can you provide information on conflicts between the Sebei tribe and the Kenyan Pokot and the Karamonjong tribe? The Sebei, Karamojong and Pokot all inhabit the border region in northeast Uganda and northwest Kenya. The Sebei (also known as the Sabei, Sapei, Sabyni and Sabiny) are a very small ethnic group and live in and around Kapchorwa district in northeast Uganda. They live on both sides of the Uganda-Kenya border. The Karamojong (also called Karamonjong and Karimojong) live to the north of the Sebei in the North Eastern part of Uganda and the Pokot (also called the Upe) live to the east and north of the Sebei in Kenya’s West Pokot district as well as northeast Uganda, especially in Nakapiripirit district which neighbours Kapchorwa district.
