Hank and Patsy, the lives and music of country’s first superstars, starring award-winning vocalists Jake Penrod and Bridgette Huffhines comes to the Na- cogdoches High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 7th. The concert features more than 40 songs and a narrative depicting the life stories of Hank Williams and Patsy Cline. Williams died at age-29 and Patsy Cline was killed in a tragic plane crash in Tennessee at age-30. Both had major roles in transforming what was known as “hillbilly” music into a genre’ which is now rec- ognized throughout the world. Jake Penrod has earned a reputation as a master of honky-tonk music, who not only sings and writes, but can also play 14 instruments. In 2013, he released an album of original material titled Closer To Me. The album showcases Penrod’s songwriting ability as well as musicianship across an array of different styles of honky-tonk music. He wrote each song on the album and played every instrument in authentic honky-tonk fashion, earning the title of “King of Texas Twang.” A native of Brownsboro, Texas, he first became interested in country music as a child when he saw a commercial for a Hank Williams record album on television. Jake attracted national attention as a featured guest on RFDTV’s TruCountry, and was a regular cast member on RuralTV’s Texas Pickin’ Party, where he not only sang, but was also the program’s pedal steel guitarist. He has performed as country music icon Hank Williams, Sr. in the Off Broadway play Lost Highway and in his self-penned road show, Hank Williams Remembered. He hosted the 2nd longest-running show in America, WSM’s Ernest Tubb Midnite Jamboree, on Sep- tember 19, 2015 He is a country music traditionalist who believes moving forward doesn’t nec- he says. “There’s still a lot you can do with what they started. If country music is going to carry on, you have to keep the roots alive.” Jake identifies with fellow Texas Honky-Tonker, Dale Watson, and has embraced the Ameripolitan genre as his own. Jake landed “Honky Tonk Male Artist of the Year” for 2017 at the annual Ameripolitan Music Awards (ameripol- itan.com) in Austin, TX. He was named Pure Country Vocalist of the Year at the 2016 Academy of Western Artists Awards in Fort Worth. At an imperially slim 6-feet-two-inches, decked out in a suit and tie, and crowned with his signature Stetson, Jake Penrod even looks like a flashback to country music’s heyday. He gives credit to fellow Texan Ernest Tubb for inspiring his style. “He always looked like a million bucks. His band, too.” Jake Penrod and his Million Dollar Cowboys can be seen regularly in theatres, dance halls and honky-tonks throughout Texas. His hardcore honky tonk band and powerful, Ray Price-like tenor vocals pierce through the loudest of barrooms and keep dancers on their feet all night. “There’s not a lot of downtime in our shows,” he says. “These people show up to dance or to enjoy traditional country music.” Bridgett Huffhines, a Texas based singer and songwriter began singing at age- six. Her parents were musicians and her father was also a songwriter. In her ear- ly-20s, she sang in area churches with her mother. In 1989, Bridgett and brother, James Grisham, formed a country band, Southbound, and toured nationally for 4-years. The band performed concerts with Willie Nelson, Lorrie Morgan, Pam Tillis, Jerry Reed, Mark Chesnutt and others. Southbound disbanded in 1993 and she moved to Nashville. After returning to Texas four-years later, she turned her life and abilities over to the Lord. Bridgett has been singing and writing gospel and country music for the last 14-years. She sang with a women’s trio, Surrendered, for 3 years. The trio released two CDs with six songs penned by Bridgett. The Music Association of Central Texas (M.A.C.T.) nominated the trio for Christian Group of the Year three years in a row. Bridgett was also nominated M.A.C.T. Top Female Vocalist for four consecutive years and for Songwriter of the Year three times. In 2004, the trio received the award for Christian Group of the Year. They performed throughout Central Texas and shared the stage with Greater Vision, Mark Bishop, The Messenger Quartet, New Ground, Al Brumley Jr., The Dixie Echoes, Haskell Cooley and others. Bridgett taught voice and writing until 2006 and co-wrote many songs with some of her students. She is writing and serving the Lord with hopes to write, sing, and spread the gospel through her songs on a much larger scale. Bridgett completed her 6th CD of original and collaborated Christian and country songs at DRS studio in Waco, TX and her last album was released in February 2014. In 2013, she was nominated as Top Female Vocalist and Songwriter of the ’Tis the Season for Year by her peers at the M.A.C.T. and was honored to take home the Songwriter of the Year award. For the past 17-years she has toured the United States performing Patsy Cline’s music for various corporations and for many functions locally. Tamales!
