British Mandate By: Rabbi Jeremy Rosen
British Mandate by: Rabbi Jeremy Rosen Whether it is in drama, journalism, or academia, there are always subjective and different ways of examining historical events. A new Channel 4 series The Promise, by Peter Kosminsky, illustrates once again the deception and dishonesty of presenting only one side of a story. The series purports to objectively illustrate how so many British soldiers, seeing at first hand in Europe the result of what the Germans perpetrated against the Jews, came to Palestine to serve in the British Mandate Army, imbued with a pro-Jewish feeling, a sense that the Jews deserved a refuge–but the actions of the wicked Zionists turned them against the Jews and left them feeling completely on the Arab side. So here is another point of view. And if you doubt my objectivity I refer you to Conor Cruise O’Brien’s The Siege for a disinterested perspective. When I first went to Israel as a teenager in 1956, I remember vividly how surprised I was when I encountered so much ill feeling and resentment towards the British Mandate. I was made to feel that being British was an embarrassment. It is not as though I did not know about the history of the British Mandate. Britain had captured the Middle East from the Turks in the First World War. The Balfour Declaration had promised a homeland for the Jews in their ancestral lands, but the interests of the Arab population had to be preserved. When Britain was granted the mandate in 1922, the first High Commissioner, Sir Herbert Samuel, a Jew, succeeded in alienating everyone. -

Zylberman et al.: Unfit to Parent UNFIT TO PARENT: AMERICAN AND JEWISH LEGAL PERSPECTIVES Michoel Zylberman, Karen K. Greenberg, & Daniel Pollack* I. INTRODUCTION When do parents become unfit to parent their children? Broadly speaking, parental unfitness may be determined by considering such factors as a parent’s conduct and capacity to provide for their child’s needs. Parents who are judicially determined to be unfit may have their parental rights terminated, may lose custody, or have visitation orders drastically modified or denied. Should a court decide that both parents are unfit, a child may be placed in foster care or be available for adoption. Unfitness to parent may arise in a variety of circumstances: allegations of child maltreatment (abandonment, abuse, and neglect), custody, incarceration of the parent, or disability or incompetence of the parent. -

lkn ,rsv (Hadrat Melech) BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES RABBANIM OF THE PERIOD OF THE RISHONIM AND ACHRONIM with INDEX OF NAMES OF RABBANIM INDEX OF ACRONYMS OF RABBANIM AND OTHER APPELLATIONS and INDEX OF NAMES OF SEFORIM Compiled by Shlomo Pereira (*) vrhrp vnka *** Work in Progress *** *** This version: May 26, 2003/Iyar 25, 5763 *** Important note on the status of this project: These Biographical Notes are very much work in progress and, therefore, they are clearly and in many ways very incomplete. This is particularly true of the period of the Achronim. I would like to apologize to the reader for any omissions of any Rabbanim or any seforim or any other details about any specific Rabbanim, which might be perceived in some way as disrespectful. Such omissions are exclusively due to the currently incomplete status of this project. In particular, G-d forbid any error or omission should be perceived as a judgement value on my part on who should and should not be included. The objective is to be as comprehensive as possible in the spirit of “/vbnn kyck ihruj ic v,t tku /rundk vftknv lhkg tk” (It is not your duty to complete the task but you are not free from trying, Avot 2:16). Please note that the Index of Rabbanim, the Index of Acronyms and other Appellations of Rabbanim, and the Index of Names of Seforim are supposed to match exactly the basic information in the Biographical Notes and will be updated simultaneously with the Notes. “In These (Polish) Regions”: the Blurred Geographical Borders of Contemporary Israeli Halakhic Writing
“In These (Polish) Regions”: the blurred geographical borders of contemporary Israeli halakhic Writing Yisrael Malkiel, Ad Hena Institute// International Colloquium on Polish Jewish History as Reflected in Education in Poland and Israel Polin Museum, 26 February 2017 In the Halakhic literature there is extensive space for discussion about the question of local customs and about the way in which this goes along with the movement of individuals and ,(מנהג המקום) small groups from a place of one custom to another. As a general background, I will mention the passages in the Mishnah (Pesahim, chapter 4), drawing the following outlines: “He who goes from a place where they work to a place where they do not work, or from a place where they do not work to a place where they do work, we lay upon him the restrictions of the place that he has left and the restrictions of the place to which he has gone; and a man must not act differently [from local custom] on account of the quarrels [which would arise].” Here we see the aspiration to keep the balance between the fixed customs of a certain community and the fact that there is a natural movement of people from place to place. The local custom always have superiority over the individuals, who are expected to accept the customs of their new habitat. However, while still being immigrants (or maybe: expatriates), they are obliged to keep the restrictions of their previous place, as long as they are still teid to another cultural space. Nevertheless, the classical sources dealt mainly with movement of individuals into existing, stable, communities, and not with big groups of people moving to a new homeland. -
