Poleo3 ABSTRACT For the Canary Islands, the sea is a path of obligatory use and on whose depend- ence the economic development of the inhabitants of the Archipelago, has been based. The problems of inter-insular maritime transport has been, and continues to be, a constant and growing worry up to the present moment, given the almost zero cargo capacity of the aeroplanes that render their services in the islands. The boats that connect the islands have changed throughout the years, and these changes have been conditioned, in great part, by the special circumstances surrounding navigation in our waters: islands situated in open sea, exposed to all types of weather; particular meteorological conditions; swell; port infrastruc- tures, etc. These circumstances have made the islands be a true bank of trials for the main types of HSC: hydrofoils, air cushion vehicles, high-speed mono-hull crafts, SES, jet-foils and catamarans, all which have navigated and run different luck. Today, there are three companies operating high speed crafts in the islands: Fred Olsen with five big catamarans, Trasmediterránea with two jet-foils and Garajonay Express with two smaller catamarans. RIBES ** ABSTRACT: The present paper is a first addition to tbe preliminary cataloguo Jf the Heteropteru-fauna of the Canary Islands (HEISS & BAEZ.1990) and includes corrections, new taxonomic assignmcnts and further citations from literature and several new records. 29 species are reported as new to the Canarian fauna, but one species is a synonym (Geocoris pvbescens Jak. = G.timidus Put.) and 8 spccies are regarded as doubtíidspccies inquirenda which should be deleted from the list. This brings the total number of species known to date from Canary Islands to 333. 1.1 N TRO D UC TI ON The publication of “A preliminary catalogue of the Heíeropíera of the Canary Islands” by HEISS & BAEZ (1990) as a compilation of the then available data from literature was an attempt to provide a kind of practica1 “check-list” without pretension of completeness.

  • Study and Conservation of Sperm Whales in the Canary Islands
STUDY AND CONSERVATION OF SPERM WHALES IN THE CANARY ISLANDS PARTICIPATE IN THE SECAC CITIZEN SCIENCE PROGRAM ON THE ISLAND OF LANZAROTE Research campaign plans for June 2020 INFORMATION DOCUMENT Society for the Study of Cetaceans in the Canary Islands (SECAC). CODE:G-38343497. Casa de los Arroyos, Avenida Coll 3, 35500 Arrecife (Las Palmas) Lanzarote, Islas Canarias. www.cetaceos.org. [email protected] Phone number:+34 928607101 THE CANARY ISLANDS SPERM WHALE PROJECT The Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is listed as vulnerable in the National Catalog of Threatened Species (RD139 / 2011), in the Regional Catalog of the Canary Islands (L.7L / PPL-001 of 2009) and is listed as "vulnerable" by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In the Canary Islands, the main threat to sperm whales is collision with fast ferries. The Canary Islands has one of the highest maritime traffic densities on the planet. Every year several cetacean strandings occur that show evidence of injuries caused by fast ferry collisions. Between 2000 and 2018, 81 sperm whales were stranded in the Canary Islands. In 44 of these cases, the cause of death was attributable to collisions with vessels. These deaths have a significant impact on the populations of the species in the archipelago because the collision mortality rate exceeds the natural reproduction rate. Furthermore, this is not only a conservation problem in the Canary archipelago but a threat to species across the Macaronesian subregion. Due to the absence of studies there is not much information on the biology and ecology of the sperm whales in this area.
