During her time as a volunteer at the Access Pro Bono Society of British Columbia, Sophia uncovered her deep- rooted passion for uniform access to justice and equal opportunity for all. As a Social Media Ambassador and Orientation Leader at her school, Sophia demonstrates her involvement in her community and reinforces her stance for everyone to have access to the information and support available to them. You can also find Sophia in her local martial gym assisting classes, and training towards her black belt. Lily Hamilton is a political science student at the University of Victoria, set to graduate this spring. Lily has been active in various political clubs throughout her time at UVic, including the Model United Nations team, and Elect Her, a club that focuses on engaging women and people of marginalized genders with politics. She is currently the Minister of Student Affairs for the Model UN Club and the President of Elect Her. Outside of school, Lily has acted as a youth advocate for Plan International Canada, as part of their Because I am a Girl campaign, where she’s engaged with Canadians to educate about female health access issues around the world. In 2017 she also participated in Plan’s Girls Belong Here campaign for Day of the Girl and shadowed the then Ontario Minister of the Status of Women, Indira Naidoo Harris, for a day. Lily is very passionate about female representation in government, Climate Change, Women’s Rights, and Indigenous Rights. -

Self-representation of Arab Female Influencers on Instagram: A qualitative and quantitative analysis Sara S. Elmaghraby ∗ Abstract This paper aims at exploring the new media platform (Instagram) and its role in offering an innovative platform for women to present themselves, and, to break stereotypes. It aims at identifying the ways Arab Female Influencers present themselves to their followers on Instagram visually and verbally. In order to collect the sample of the Arab Influencers, a survey was conducted on 100 female college students. Then a quantitative and qualitative analysis was conducted on the accounts of 115 Arab female influencers that these students followed the most. Influencers were divided according to their careers, and their official accounts and were analyzed according to a 7-category coding scheme. The last post published on their account was described with its caption, hashtag, tag, and visual frame. The paper concluded that college students prefer to follow actresses, singers and fashionistas, travel bloggers and nutritionists. It also concluded that Arab female influencers mainly tend to present themselves promoting their work and publishing personal stories on this new media platform (Instagram). Mosaic is 105 years old, serves more than 3,700 people through 36 agencies in 10 states, and has annual revenue of more than $238 million. Numbers tell a story, but there is so much more. Not everything that matters can be counted . We can’t count the smiles, or the laughter, or the new experiences, or the trust or the many other intangibles that permeate our ministry. Those need to be experienced to understand the full story—a story of possibilities realized by the people we serve. In this impact report, we are sharing many numbers that highlight several aspects of our wide-ranging ministry. RAMZY A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Carolyn Ramzy (2014) Abstract The Performative Politics of (Dis)Engagment: Coptic Christian Revival and the Performative Politics of Song Carolyn M. Ramzy A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Music, University of Toronto 2014 This dissertation explores Coptic Orthodox political (dis)engagement through song, particularly as it is expressed through the colloquial Arabic genre of taratil. Through ethnographic and archival research, I assess the genre's recurring tropes of martyrdom, sacrifice, willful withdrawal, and death as emerging markers of community legitimacy and agency in Egypt's political landscape before and following the January 25th uprising in 2011. Specifically, I explore how Copts actively perform as well as sing a pious and modern citizenry through negations of death and a heavenly afterlife. How do they navigate the convergences and contradictions of belonging to a nation as minority Christian citizens among a Muslim majority while feeling that they have little real civic agency? Through a number of case studies, I trace the discursive logics of “modernizing” religion into easily tangible practices of belonging to possess a heavenly as well as an earthly nation. I begin with Sunday Schools in the predominately Christian and middle-class neighborhood of Shubra where educators made the poetry of the late Coptic Patriarch, Pope Shenouda III, into taratil and drew on their potentials of death and withdrawal to reform a Christian moral interiority and to teach a modern and pious Coptic citizenry. -
