CBC Radio One’s Doug Hempstead was there as the emcee and Yuk Yuk’s comedian Don Kelly had us laughing with his stand-up comedy. Special guest Phil Jenkins (PWC’s first coordinator!) revived a song that he composed for PWC many years ago called Alphabet Soup. Mayor Jim Watso n awarded PWC a proclamation which was read aloud that night by Kae McColl (a former PWC Executive Director and board member). Good Eats provided delicious finger food and Broadhead Brewing Company was on site to sell their specialty craft beer.     ART CANADA INSTITUTE INSTITUT DE L’ART CANADIEN APRIL 30, 2021 THE ART OF MONEY COLVILLE’S CENTENNIAL COINS Fifty-four years ago Expo 67 opened in Montreal—and the coins created by revered Canadian painter Alex Colville were a part of the world fair festivities. On the anniversary of the event ACI is launching a new online exhibition about the famed currency that marked the country’s 100-year celebration of Confederation. In 2017, the Art Canada Institute published Alex Colville: Life & Work by Ray Cronin, a work about our country’s foremost realist painter and how he imbued his meticulously painted scenes of everyday life with profound questions about the human condition. Our new online exhibition takes a closer look at a highly celebrated project by the Toronto-born, Maritime-based artist, one that produced the most widely- circulated artistic objects in Canadian history: six centennial coins that Colville (1920–2013) designed in 1965 and 1966 for the Royal Canadian Mint in celebration of Canada’s one hundredth anniversary of Confederation. Marking the anniversary of the opening of Expo 67 on April 27, 1967, The Measure of Nature: Alex Colville’s Centennial Coins, presented in partnership with the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and Billie Magazine, reveals the artist’s process of developing indelible currency inspired by Canadian wildlife.     AUDIOVISUAL INTEGRATION AND INTERACTIVE PROGRAMMING Citizens and the Canadian Economy Bank of Canada Museum Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, 2017 Canada’s Currency Museum has been completely revamped and is now called the Bank of Canada Museum. This museum, located in the Bank of Canada’s headquarters, has a mission to publicize the Bank’s policies and functions, to understand the workings of the Canadian economy and the role of citizens at the heart of the Bank. The museum also highlights an impressive numismatic collection. When the directors of the Bank of Canada decided to completely restore the head office, they entrusted GSM Project with redesigning the permanent exhibition by rethinking the visitor experience. The exhibition designers mandated XYZ’s expertise to integrate audiovisual equipment and develop interactive stations that help popularize this arid subject. Description Understanding complex economic mechanisms is central to the Bank of Canada Museum’s permanent exhibit proposal. To do this, the designers of GSM Project have imagined an attractive space, including several immersive and interactive stations. Audio and video technologies, as well as lighting, play a prominent role in the visitor experience. Each person is accompanied by a personalized avatar that they program themselves at the beginning of their journey. Navigation by station eases the subject and ludifies the experience. XYZ experts have integrated and programmed the entire audiovisual system, consisting of several video screens and touch screens including a huge interactive wall at the entrance. At the heart of the space, the team provided the programming and video mapping of a multimedia show that links the different functions of the Bank of Canada.

    Governor's foreword The year 2020 was like no other. It began with the unemployment rate in Canada near an all-time low, inflation very close to its 2 percent target and the Bank of Canada’s policy interest rate at 1¾ percent. Canada’s economy was healthy. To use Governor Stephen Poloz’s words in the foreword of last year’s Annual Report, “the macroeconomy has made it home.” A year later, we are far from home. By February 2020, COVID‑19 was spreading globally, and in March, Canada went into a lockdown. Thanks to the collective efforts of so many—health care providers, first responders, essential workers, governments, business leaders and every Canadian who took public health guidance to heart—a much worse catastrophe was averted. Nevertheless, the human and economic costs of the pandemic have been severe, and it’s not over. The COVID‑19 pandemic took the lives of more than 15,000 Canadians in 2020. And with the virus continuing to spread, more Canadians will get sick—some with devastating consequences. In the spring of 2020, the economy plunged into the deepest recession on record—putting more than three million Canadians out of work —and inflation fell to zero. Since then, the economy has climbed a long way back from the very deep hole it was in. But the recovery remains very incomplete. At the end of 2020, rising infections and new lockdowns were poised to worsen the economic situation in early 2021, before the rollout of new vaccines allows for a gradual return to more normal activities sometime later in the year.
