Mary Louise Dunning, Jr., Kellar Harris, Mary V. Joyce, Brian Leahy, Rebecca Reyes, the Redemptorists at St. Clement Health Care Center, Drew Williams, Maryann Wiszowaty

To place or keep a name on our sick list, please call the rectory every 4 weeks to let us know that you, a loved one, or friend are still in need of prayers.

Mass Intentions The priests at St. Michael's continue to say Mass in private for the intentions designated in our Mass book. You may still have intentions designated for all our Masses during this time. Call the Parish Office at 312-642-2498 if you would like to have an intention, living or deceased, at one of our Masses.

Helping Those Who Cannot Leave Their Home

There has been a wonderful response from individuals offering to help those in our community and parish by shopping, picking up prescriptions and other necessary errands. If you know of someone requiring this type of assistance, (a neigh- bor, relative or someone you know from coming to Mass at St. Michael's!) email their address or contact information to [email protected]. Thank you!

Catholic Charities Seeking Immediate Volunteers

Catholic Charities is seeing an unprecedented increase in the need for food at our food pantries and needs assistance in sorting and bagging food at our pantries and curbside delivery of the food. There will be limited-to-no client contact involved and precautions have been implemented in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidance to ensure the health and safety of our clients, staff and volunteers remains a high priority. We have increased the fre- quency and intensity of all cleaning and disinfecting protocols, have adjusted hours of operation and schedules, imple- mented social distancing protocols and will provide gloves and access to hand washing. Anyone not in a high-risk cate- gory as defined by the CDC that would like to volunteer, please contact Andrew McKernin at 312.513.4711 or [email protected] as soon as possible for additional information – the need is immediate.

Here is a CNS translation of the prayer Francis recited by video March 11 for a special Mass and act of prayer asking Mary to protect and the world during of the coronavirus pandemic.

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus' pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Patron Saints of Hospital Workers ... Saint John of God Juan grew up working as a shepherd in the Castile region of Spain. He led a wild and misspent youth, and travelled over much of and north as a soldier in the army of Charles V, and as a mercenary. Fought through a brief peri- od of insanity. Peddled religious books and pictures in Gibraltar, though without any religious conviction himself. In his 40’s he received a vision of the Infant Jesus who called him John of God. To make up for the misery he had caused as a soldier, he left the military, rented a house in Granada, Spain, and began caring for the sick, poor, homeless and un- wanted. He gave what he had, begged for those who couldn’t, carried those who could not move on their own, and con- verted both his patients and those who saw him work with them. Friend of Saint John of Avila, on whom he tried to model his life. John founded the Order of Charity and the Order of Hospitallers of Saint John of God.

Saint Camillus of Lellis Son of a military officer who had served both for Naples and France. His mother died when Camillus was very young. He spent his youth as a soldier, fighting for the Venetians against the Turks, and then for Naples. Reported as a large individual, perhaps as tall as 6’6″ (2 metres), and powerfully built, but he suffered all his life from abscesses on his feet. A gambling addict, he lost so much he had to take a job working construction on a building belonging to the Capuchins; they converted him.

Camillus entered the Capuchin noviate three times, but a nagging leg injury, received while fighting the Turks, each time forced him to give it up. He went to , Italy for medical treatment where Saint Philip Neri became his priest and confessor. He moved into San Giacomo Hospital for the incurable, and eventually became its administrator. Lack- ing education, he began to study with children when he was 32 years old. Priest. Founded the Congregation of the Serv- ants of the Sick (the Camillians or Fathers of a Good Death) who, naturally, care for the sick both in hospital and home. The Order expanded with houses in several countries. Camillus honored the sick as living images of Christ, and hoped that the service he gave them did penance for his wayward youth. Reported to have the gifts of miraculous healing and prophecy.

Saint Jude Thaddeus Also known as • Jude of James • Judas Thaddaeus • Lebbaeus • Jude, brother of Jesus • Lebai Sleeha

Son of Cleophas, who died a martyr, and Mary who stood at the foot of the Cross, and who anointed Christ’s body after death. Brother of Saint James the Lesser. Nephew of Mary and Joseph; blood relative of Jesus Christ, and reported to look a lot like him. May have been a fisherman. Apostle.

Wrote the canonical Epistle named for him. Preached in Syria, Mesopotamia, and Persia with Saint Simon. Healer. Exor- cist. Could exorcise pagan idols, which caused the demons to flee and the statues to crumble. His patronage of lost or impossible causes traditionally derives from confusion by many early Christians between Jude and the traitor Judas Iscariot; not understanding the difference between the names, they never prayed for Jude’s help, and devotion to him became something of a lost cause.

Saint Vincent de Paul Born to a peasant family. A highly intelligent youth, Vincent spent four years with the Franciscan at Acq, France getting an education. Tutor to children of a gentlemen in Acq. He began divinity studies in 1596 at the University of Toulouse. Ordained at age 20.

Taken captive by Turkish pirates to Tunis, and sold into slavery. Freed in 1607 when he converted one of his owners to Christianity.

Returning to France, he served as parish priest near Paris where he started organizations to help the poor, nursed the sick, found jobs for the unemployed, etc. Chaplain at the court of Henry IV of France. With Louise de Marillac, founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Charity. Instituted the Congregation of Priests of the Mission (Lazarists). Worked always for the poor, the enslaved, the abandoned, the ignored, the pariahs.

Remember Jesus ...

This Sunday we celebrate Palm Sunday, but we are not together, so it will be different kind of celebration. The challenge for us will be to keep the spirit of Lent and the Easter Tridium without being at a religious cele- bration. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, he was met by crowds of people waving palms. We can’t gather now to wave palms, but we can still welcome Jesus into are hearts. We are tempted to focus on the absence of oth- ers, and the distance between us, instead we need to focus on the presence of Jesus around us wherever we may be. The person of faith sees the presence of the Lord, rather than the absence of others. We are, at times, by ourselves but we are never alone when Jesus is part of our lives.

During these troubled times, our faith is tested, and it is a time for our faith to be strengthened. The only way our faith is strengthened is when it is under stress. The challenge will be to strengthen our faith without loos- ing hope. If we try to do it without Jesus we will fail, but as long as we remember what Jesus has done for us, his own passion, death, and resurrection, we will find the strength and the hope to go on.

When we feel alone, remember Jesus in the garden at Gethsemane, when his disciples went to sleep rather than keep watch with him. When we feel afraid, remember Jesus being scourged in the temple, when he al- lowed his body to be beaten rather than fight back. And when we feel abandoned, remember Jesus dying on the cross at Calvary when even his closest disciples left him. When all hope seems lost, remember the resur- rection of Jesus and the restoration of hope to his disciples. Jesus went through these things so that we might be saved and never be lost.

“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Rom 8:38-39

Peace, stay well, until we can gather again,

Fr. Larry

Redemptorist Spirituality Workshop

The Denver Province through the Partners in Mission Working Group is offering a 2-day virtual workshop on May 2nd and 3rd. For those who want to know more about the Redemptorists and their underlying spirituality, the participants will be presented key aspects of this faith perspective and share in reflections on their own spirituality. The sessions will be from 2:00pm—6:00pm CSTon Saturday and Sunday in the Parish Center. There is no cost to attend and more information will be made available as the date approaches. Those that cannot participate at the parish event but want to attend can do so by virtual communication. However, these openings are limited, and you need to register at the Parish Office, 312-642-2498.

Those that attend the full workshop will have completed the requirements to attend the circle gatherings that take place once a month. If local circles want to invite people from this event to participate at the next level, they can do so. I allowed people who participated with our retreat to discern as they went along. Some chose not to participate with the circle gatherings while others decided it was not for them and stopped participating.

Workshop cluster gatherings might need to limit the number of participants depending on the size of the room. The location needs to have access to WIFI for Zoom Conference capabilities. Projector/TV and computer would be needed at a location to participate. For those who are doing it virtually, smart phone, pad and computer would be needed to participate.

Time needs to be calculated from central time, so we are all on the same page.

Thank you! Thank you for your contributions supporting St. Michael in Old Town! So many parishes, including St. Michael's operate on a very tight budget. We continue to have salaries, utilities, insurance and other expenses to pay. Without weekend liturgies, St. Michael's loses a significant amount of income from the Offertory. We ask that you continue to support the St. Michael's Church by giving online!

Ways to Give at St. Michael’s!

We strive to make giving convenient and current with modern technology choices and online giving. Consider setting your donation up online so even though we are apart, your donation won’t be! Below you will find options for you when you find yourself wanting to donate.

1. Giving Kiosk, or online On the east side of the church is a kiosk designed for accepting donations. On the front of the kiosk you can insert cash, checks or swipe a credit card for “Quick” gives. No login is required. OR—if you choose, our kiosk is linked directly to our website, st-mikes.org. From the St. Michael’s home page, you can view our website for information or gain access to our Online Giving System. If you would like to create a regular donation plan and are unable to use a computer, please call Pat Krier in the office for assistance. (312-642-2498).

2. We accept donations of cash or checks mailed to us (1633 N. Cleveland Ave., Chicago, IL 60614), delivered to the office. 3. Venmo! Enter this link to signup, https://venmo.com/signup. 4. Estate (planned giving) or stock donations are accepted also. To donate the value of stock, go to http://legacy.archchicago.org/departments/financial_services/stock-donations.aspx. We appreciate each donation no matter the method, frequency or amount. Each gift allows St. Michael’s to continue its mission and continue to be a place of prayerful respite when needed. If you have any questions about giving options, call Pat Krier at 312-642-2498 or email [email protected].
