Welcome to the Boone County Fair 50th Anniversary AUGUST 6 - 11, 2013 - Belvidere Il.

Photos by Susan Moran 2 August 2nd, 2013 The Boone County Journal 815-544-4430 In Our 18th Year www.boonecountyjournal.com President’s Welcome Welcome to the 2013 Boone County Fair Dear Fair Guest: A warm summertime welcome to the best family agricultural exposition and fair of its kind in the Midwest, The Boone County Fair. We offer you and your family six days of fun and adventure as you explore our 153 acres filled with livestock, exhibits, vendors, thrill rides, entertainment and that wonderful tasty fair food.

And you can help us celebrate our 50th Anniversary of being located here on Route 76. Back in 1963 the Grangers of Boone County who had been operating the fair since 1957 at what is now Spencer Park moved here to 84 acres of bare farmland. We started from absolute scratch and 50 years later we are not only still here but we Grangers of Boone County proudly own and operate the best fairground park and fair you’ll find anywhere.

Be sure to get and wear your souvenir 50th Anniversary button when you purchase a season ticket at one of our outlets in town or you can pick up a free button at either the Administration Building at Gate 2 or Main Ticket Office at gate 1 at the fairground. If you’re at the fair now stop in and pick up a button. Remember you could win $50 cash or other prizes by simply wearing your button while you’re at the fair.

We’re delighted to have Country Star here for Saturday night. I like his song “More Trucks Than Cars”. It’s a good one. I’m a little country but if you’re more rock ‘n roll then you should enjoy Wednesday evening with Journey and Pat Benatar Tribute Bands, Arrival and Femme Rock.

During the six days of the fair you’ll also be able to have encounters with elephants, watch monkey jockeys race on dogs, see costumed geese parade drinking Mountain Dew, and cheer on your favorite cowboy riding the meanest bull this side of Denver.

Articles and the schedule, should help explain all of that and more about this year’s Boone County Fair. But if you have any questions feel free to call 815-544-2900 or go to our website at www.boonecountyfair.com. Or if you’re on the grounds stop in the Administration Building at Gate 2 or ask someone with a white fair hat. We’ll be happy to help you any way we can. We want these six days of summer to be your best days of summer.

See you at the fair!

Sincerely, Lyle Lee - President, Boone County Fair Association Mr. Lyle Lee, President, Boone County Fair Association

Those that are familiar with the Fair know when rain falls, the grounds can get muddy and wet. The paving of this street that is a prime artery on the fairgrounds is a big improvement. More and more of the streets and walkways that interlace the fairgrounds are being paved with hot asphalt every year. These improvement make a big difference for exhibitors and those that come every year. Significant improvements were also made to evacuate water from the fairgrounds with the set-up of dry wells near the livestock exhibiting areas. Dry wells were added to the south side of the livestock barn areas and also to the south side of the horse barn. These dry wells will make it easier for water to be evacuated underground when the rains come or if water from washing the animals needs to be released. In previous years water pooled and puddled in the low areas and made moving around this area and near the barns a problem. The mud this year should be kept to a minimum with the addition of these new dry wells. Major areas of the parking lots were also improved this year with dry asphalt being applied. A number of roadways and walkways have now been improved to make it easier for the thousands of people that will come this year to the 50th Anniversary of the Boone County Fair. The roadways and walking surfaces are now much smoother because of the dry asphalt. But, beyond the livestock judging and the exhibiting, thousands of people from around the Midwest come to the Fair for the fun, the entertainment and the attractions. This year entertainment is the key word to describe the 50th Anniversary of the Fair. Mama’s Wranglers Tuesday night, as always, features the crowing of Miss Boone County Fair (aka) Kid Fiddlers and the crowning of “Little” Miss Boone County Fair in the grandstand area. BELVIDERE -Welcome one and all this summer to the 2013 Boone County Fair August 6th – 11th. This has been the goal of the Boone County Grange members who have owned and operated the Boone County Fair for the past 50 years or so… to make you feel welcome and have an enjoyable time of family fun at the fair. After all, we are the fair “Dedicated to Families”.

This summer will be the Boone County Fair’s 50th Anniversary and 50th Fair at the Route 76 location one mile north of Belvidere at 8791 Route 76. In the Spring of 1963 the Pomona Grange purchased 84 acres of prime flat land on Rt 76 where the fair is located today. By August of 1964 the Pomona Grange had built some restrooms, laid out some streets and set up many, many tents. A new era for the Boone County Fair had begun. But to get to that first fair in August of 1964 took a lot of sacrifice, a sense of hope, the willingness to take a gamble and some good timing with a little luck. We need to go back to 1955 when some Boone County Grange members while attending the annual fair at what is now Spencer Park were disenchanted with what they saw… small crowds, few exhibits, old buildings, poor entertainment and just an overall lack of participation by the local community. In the next year the Boone County Pomona Grange voted to accept an offer from the current fair association and the Pomona Grange would take over the operation of the fair starting in 1957. Try as they might, the Pomona Grange had trouble breathing new life into the fair at the old fairgrounds which was purchased in 1867. The Grange was unable to update buildings and being locked in by the Kishwaukee river restricted any expansion. The Pomona Grange voted to make the 1963 fair their last. But by the winter of 1962-63, eighty-four acres became available at the current location sparking new interest in the fair. Through perseverance and several dedicated Grange members, signing their farms as collateral, the land was purchased. With the help of campaigns by the Pomona Grange and local 4-H clubs, buildings were started. Also through the help of the Livestock

Did you know? from the North Boone Wind Farm Team How wind energy adds up

Did you know... that after a proposed wind farm received conditional approval in Australia last week, the Western Australian Farmers Federation stated that “more farmers should turn to wind power as a way to supplement their incomes” Said Federation President Dale Park, “Farmers need to take a good clear look at wind farms, like all alternative income sources, and if there’s a chance to offset some of the variability in climate then I think it’s what we should be doing. I think inherently it’s a good idea…so if we can have a system where we profit from the wind we get, for instance, we should be grabbing it with both hands.” (*)

Did you know... that in Hays, Kansas, with Fort Hays State University facing additional state budget reductions, FHSU installed two wind turbines to help offset the budget cuts while retaining academic programs at the university? The decision was also motivated by the projected annual savings of $600,000 in the university’s energy bill— which is now closer to $1 million due to rising energy costs. “This project brings us savings that will be close to the figure the Legislature has cut us. A substantial amount of the budget reduction will be offset by the savings we should get by using wind power generation,” said Edward Hammond, Ph.D., FHSU president. (**)

Did you know... that the State of Oklahoma is receiving two new wind farms that will provide clean, renewable wind energy to utilities in Arkansas and Nebraska with the added benefit of bringing savings to local customers on their monthly electric bills? Lincoln Electric Systems CEO Kevin Wailes said that the projects “will bring lower-cost power to the company’s customers” and that “We expect to begin realizing these savings in the first year, with the benefits increasing throughout the life of the contract.” (***) This is due to the concept of “demand management” in power planning and distribution, which “lowers and shifts demand for electricity as an alternative to creating additional supply through expanding the grid,” according to a recent study commissioned by the AUGUST 23, 24, 25 00 Clean Energy Finance Corporation. The entire six-days of the 50th Anniversary of the Boone County Fair is a very “Big Show.” But, every year the Boone County Fair Association brings to Belvidere and Boone County big name entertainers that draw huge crowds to the big grandstand for one night of premier entertainment. The 2013 edition of the Fair is no different this year than in past years with county/western star Craig Morgan entertaining Saturday night August 10 at 7:30 p.m. with his unique renditions of country/western music. Craig comes to Boone County from Kingston Springs, Tennessee. He served in the US Army before testing his voice and his style Come to the BCCA Fair Booth as a county/western music star in Nashville. After a few years of work there working in a wide variety of jobs, Craig landed work as a demo-singer making recordings of yet to be released music for and performers. to get Quilt Raffle Tickets That work led to him being signed by Atlantic Records and later by an independent label, Broken Bow Records. From that moment, the hits began to appear. In 2003 he released his album “I Love It,” that rose on the charts with one song, “Almost Home” reaching the top ten. That success was followed in 2004 with the release of “My Kind of Livin’” that included eight songs Craig either wrote himself or co-wrote. That album contained a song that became a number one hit, “That’s What I Love About Sunday.” Another song from the album, “Redneck Yacht Club” that also rose to the top of the country/western music charts. This album rose to earn a gold rating with more than 500,000 sales. In 2006 Craig recorded “” and that album was followed by Craig’s “Greatest Hits” recording. In 2008 he released his album, “That’s Why” that was followed by “This Ole Boy,” in 2011. His most recent hit album was released in 2013 and it titled, “The Journey (Livin’ Hits)” that contains his hit song “Wakin’ Up Lovin’ You.” Craig and his wife Karen and their four children live in Dickson, Tennessee but year around Craig spends much of his time on the road. To give an idea of the life of a country/western music star it takes a team of skilled workers to keep track of where he will be tomorrow and the day after. Leading up to his appearance in Belvidere, Craig is in Philadelphia, Mississippi on August 2, in Lincoln, Illinois on the third, in Urbana on August 5 and he’s in Louisville, Kentucky on August 9. Craig Morgan comes to Belvidere and the Boone County Fair on Saturday August 10. The Craig Morgan Show at the 50th Anniversary of the Boone County Fair is the “Big Show” of the Fair. The show runs Saturday Call 815-544-9893 August 10 and opens at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the Big Show for track seating and grandstand seating run $15. Bleacher seating costs For A Ride!! only $10. To see entertainment of this caliber and to see a true country/western music star perform, that is a very small price to pay. Craig Morgan performs at the grandstand in the “Big Show” at the 50th Anniversary of the Boone County Fair. The Fair opens Tuesday August 6 and runs through Sunday August 11 but the Craig Morgan Show opens on Saturday, August 10 at 7:30 p.m. Don’t miss the hits; don’t miss the excitement; don’t miss Craig Morgan.

It’s slow going for IL high-speed rail project By Benjamin Yount | Illinois Watchdog

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois is still inching forward with plans to place high- speed rail between Chicago and St. Louis, but it will probably take another two years to prepare the track. This week brought a wave of new announcements about work on the track but, according to some quick math, thinks don’t quite add up. SLOW GOING: IL is inching along toward high speed rail. Passengers will easily cruise at 65 mph, or maybe a bit faster, between Chicago and St. Louis later this summer. But they’ll be on a bus, not a high- speed train. Track work in Central Illinois will essentially close the Chicago to St. Louis line for eight days in mid-August. Amtrak and the Illinois Department of Transportation brag that trains from Chicago to St. Louis can hit 110 mph, but in reality the average train speed is between 53 mph and 63 mph. The bus is faster. This week also saw a slew of reports about a $1.4 billion appropriation for tracks, crossings and railroad sidings. “That’s not new money,” Paris Irvin, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Transportation, said. “That’s (still) part of the original money for high-speed rail.” In 2010, Illinois got $1.4 billion for high-speed rail. The state then picked up another $42 million later that year when Wisconsin and Ohio turned down federal grants. Illinois received another $186 million in 2011 when Florida declined high-speed rail projects. Illinois may, however, need new money in the future. It may take as much as $3 billion more to fully implement high-speed rail in the state. Need to make changes for our upcoming IDOT will tell anyone who asks — and some who do not — that ridership Boone County 2014 phone book? between Chicago and St. Louis is up 224 percent since 2006. “That increase has occurred, despite construction (between Chicago and St. Now is the time to: - Add - new phone number or delete outdated numbers Louis) and prior to the implementation of faster trains on newer equipment,” - Add - cellphone numbers and remove unused landline phone number IDOT Secretary Anne Schneider told a congressional hearing last month, - Add - VOIP phone numbers (voice over IP) even alluding to higher ridership numbers once high-speed rail begins. But the real increases in those ridership figures came well before high-speed rail was even in the planning stages. Illinois saw a 74 percent jump in riders between 2006 and 2007, when Amtrak increased traffic from two to five trains. Ridership jumped another 41 percent in 2008. “We know that when you increase the frequency of the train, more people will ride,” Randal O’Toole, a senior fellow with the Cato Institute, explained, saying the high-speed trains in Illinois won’t run any more frequently than they do now. Since 2011, ridership numbers have increased no more than 4 percent each year. Last year ridership on the Chicago to St. Louis route jumped an anemic .2 percent. Illinois’ first high-speed train hit 110 mph in October. Currently, just 25 miles of track — between Pontiac and Dwight — are cleared for speeds of 110 mph. IDOT said it hopes to have the rest of the Chicago to St. Louis route ready for high-speed rail by 2015 — what work this summer and next summer is supposed to finish. But the rest of the route does not necessarily mean the entire route. Just two-thirds of the 284-mile route from Chicago to St. Louis will be upgraded to handle faster trains. The 37 miles between Joliet and Chicago, and the 30 or so miles outside St. Louis, will never be cleared for high-speed rail. “We know the average speed tends to be about two-thirds of the top speed,” O’Toole said. “I like to think of it as moderate-speed trains.” Email Benjamin Yount at Ben@ IllinoisWatchdog.org and find him on Twitter @BenYount

Fermilab Accelerator Gets 15-Ton Magnet By Ronnie Thompson

The path from Long Island new York to Batavia was long and arduous. After slowly making its way from New York, a giant electromagnet has settled itself down just outside of Batavia. The point of origin was Brookhaven National Lab in Long Island, New York. The 15-ton electromagnet is going to be used at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, or Fermilab. The research facility that is Fermilab is dedicated to conducting experiments in particle physics; the study of the laws that govern the smallest bits of matter in the universe. The Tevatron is a huge circular ring that is just over four miles size where protons and anti-protons are pushed to speeds approaching the speed of light before being smashed together. The collisions have the possibility of exposing subatomic particles that have yet to be discovered. So far the Tevatron accelerator has performed 500 trillion collisions and shown the existence of particles with names like “Top Quark” and “’double strange “Omega Baryon.” By using the new electromagnet that was just received from New York, Fermilab hopes to capture a subatomic particle called a Muon. The experimental activity designed to capture the Muon is named, “Muon G-2.” According to Fermilab’s website, the current measurement of the Muon’s behavior is a constant baseline in particle physics. However, there was slight deviation in some of the experiments conducted at the Brookhaven facility where the electromagnet had formerly been used. With more precise tools, and collaborations available elsewhere, the research scientists at Fermilab look deeper into these deviations and they could change the way particle physics is investigated in the future. The ultimate goal from the Fermilab website regarding the search for the Muon is for “Fermilab to create a more intense beam of muons and, with the same ring, should be able to reduce that margin and provide a definite answer.”
