FREE CHILDREN’S The list of our legends makes for a very impressive honour roll and it gives the Club great pride to name today’s races after them in recognition of the ENTERTAINMENT wonderful successes they have achieved in their lifetimes. TODAY Dave and Lance O’Sullivan are recognised in two races as having been the most successful father and son / trainer and jockey combination New Zealand has ever seen. Between them, the O’Sullivans left no stone unturned during their time in the business – winning virtually every major event in the country and were 1pm – 4pm regular visitors to the winners’ circle at Ellerslie. Norm Holland was a great jockey during his time in the saddle and is one of Newmarket Lawn racing’s true gentlemen. Norm was awarded the prestigious Contribution to Racing Award at the 2010 New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Awards and has always been a wonderful role model for our young jockeys – always available to help and advise the riders on racedays. Another one of New Zealand’s top jockeys in David Peake is recognised today. David was a high-class jockey, winning virtually every major race in New Zealand – and his share of Australian features too. David was apprenticed to George Cameron in Takanini and rode in excess of 2000 winners; he also formed a great partnership with Ray Verner. David won five jockey premierships and was associated with some high class horses including Blue Blood, My Good Lord, Turfcutter and Prince Majestic. Today’s Grant Cooksley Tankard recognises one of our great jockeys in recent times. Grant has achieved what many have not – winning the Great Northern Steeplechase as well as enjoying a stellar career on the flat. Master trainer Colin Jillings needs no introduction. Even after his retirement, his passion and enthusiasm has never wavered – Colin is always oncourse (with wife Alison) and is a huge supporter of the Club and its activities. Colin, who trained in Takanini, was a great talent at setting a horses for a race and won some of the most well-known races in Australasia. Now based in Australia, RJ (Bob) Skelton is known as being one of the best jockeys in the 1960s – 1980s. Bob had an uncanny knack at winning the major 3200m races and rode some of our very best horses including Great Sensation, Grey Way, Showgate, Star Belle, Rose Mellay and Royal Cadenza. The last race today, the T J McKee Trophy, recognises one of the hardest workers in the business (and one of our most successful trainers) – Trevor McKee. For a long time, Trevor was one of the country’s leading trainers, winning the majority of New Zealand’s best races. One of the great horses he was associated with (as an owner and trainer) was the outstanding mare Sunline, who now rests in peace outside the entrance to our stables. While son Stephen now trains from their Ardmore base, Trevor continues to play an integral role in the McKee Stable with his wealth of knowledge and he’s a well- known face at our racedays. Enjoy your day today and I hope to see you back on course again on Saturday where we celebrate the 138th running of the Group I $200,000 Easter Handicap – a race that is shaping up to be an exciting feature with horses such as reigning New Zealand Horse of the Year, Jimmy Choux, being set for it. • Gloaming by Kathleen Jones
Gloaming by Kathleen Jones Throughout the history of Thoroughbred racing there are many exceptional horses who have been held as examples of heroes whose names would live forever. We call them legends. But somehow, over time, the details of their successes have grown foggy until eventually the memory of these once-legendary animals lives only in the rarely-touched paper leaves of libraries. One horse in particular who deserves a better fate than anonymity is an Australian-bred gelding named Gloaming. At a time when Americans were celebrating the exploits of Man o'War and Exterminator, Australian and New Zealand race fans were going crazy for Gloaming. He won from 4 furlongs to a mile and half, setting time records at any distance. At one point his streak of victories had reached nineteen in a row. From ages 3 to 9 he began in 67 races, and won 57 of those. He was 2nd on nine other occasions. The one race in which he failed to run either first or second was a race at age 3 in which he fell. Gloaming was entirely of British descent, and was inbred 4x4 to Two Thousand Guineas runner-up, Sterling. He also carried duplications of Bend Or, Galopin, and Rosebery in his pedigree. The racing season of 1918/1919 in Australia and New Zealand got off to a slow start owing to an outbreak of influenza which necessitated the closing of several race meetings. So Gloaming's first start was a 9f prep stakes for the AJC Derby. He won his debut by 8 lengths then followed up with a new time record in the Australian Derby.

16TH EDITION / DECEMBER 2014 GAI’S GAZETTE Ooh La La... Darley Flying Start trainee, Dane Robinson, with outstanding sire Teofilo at Kildangan Stud, Ireland “Strange to think it has only been four months since departing the team at Tulloch Lodge. I can assure you it feels like a lifetime ago. Some wise words from Darley Flying Start graduates and current Gai Waterhouse Racing employees Adrian Bott and Emma Pearce before starting the course, continually bounce around my head. “It’s the equivalent of ten years of indus- try experience, crammed into two.” The pace at which the course moves leaves you dizzy at times, but there is no other way you’d prefer it. Since arriving on August 18 we have managed to complete the first Irish phase of the course which included equine anatomy and physiology modules at the University College of Dublin, Irish industry assignments and a trainee led conference to leaders of the Irish thoroughbred industry, including Horse Racing Ireland’s Chief Executive, Brian Kavanagh. Not to mention the mornings spent assisting with the breaking in of yearlings, working with stallions, vets, farriers and dentists at Darley’s picturesque Kildangan Stud, and sitting in on lectures from industry leaders throughout the afternoons. workload of the course as equivalent to his experience working full time for WinStar All of this whilst attending some of the major Farm in the US and completing his Masters of Business Administration at the same bloodstock sales and the world’s best race meet- time. ings including the Irish and British Champion’s You certainly need to bring a mature and committed approach if you are looking Weekends.
