Part Four 1946 - 1964 Colin Wilton-Smith “I remember the honesty and trust displayed by the occupiers - good old days!” In January 1963 I started work as an articled pupil with Hall, Pain & Foster, Chartered Surveyors and Estate Agents, at 48 West Street, Fareham (now Beals Estate Agents). I was one of three articled pupils and we were required to collect rents on a Monday of each week. One week covered the Gosport area; the alternate week was Titchfield and the Western wards of Fareham. The Titchfield rent round involved, amongst others, the collection of rents in Catisfield Lane, the centre of Titchfield village and areas close by - some 50 or 60 properties with weekly rents of anything between 10 shillings (50p) and 15 shillings (75p). I rode a BSA 250cc scooter, a lethal machine - lots of power and little stability. On one occasion, before the village was by-passed and when Catisfield Lane led to the village, I skidded into a ditch scattering the rent money amongst the leaves and with the scooter ending up somewhere down the road. Rents in the village were collected mainly from East Street, the cottages in Church Path and West Street. In those days if the tenants were not in, the door was left unlocked and the rent and rent book would be on the table inside. Most of the tenants were employed in the market gardening/ strawberry industries and during the strawberry season, bags or punnets of strawberries would be left for me, testing my aptitude of riding the scooter fully laden.

  • River Meon at Funtley House Farm
River Meon at Funtley House Farm An advisory visit carried out by the Wild Trout Trust – July 2012 1 1. Introduction This report is the output of a Wild Trout Trust advisory visit undertaken on a 0.5km stretch of the River Meon at Funtley House Farm, Titchfield. The river is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Wight and is only very occasionally fished by friends of the owner. The request for the visit was made by Simon Wight who is keen to understand the best way of managing the river. Comments in this report are based on observations on the day of the site visit and discussions with the owners. Throughout the report, normal convention is followed with respect to bank identification i.e. banks are designated Left Bank (LB) or Right Bank (RB) whilst looking downstream. Downstream boundary Upstream boundary SU 547 079 SU 550 081 River Meon, Funtley House Farm 2. Catchment overview The River Meon rises from the Hampshire chalk aquifer near the village of East Meon and flows south for approximately 37km before entering the sea at Hill Head. The river enjoys a steep gradient for a chalk river, falling approximately 120m from source to sea. The middle and upper reaches of the river flow over deposits of Lower Chalk, which is less permeable than the Upper Chalk geology predominantly found in the rest of East Hampshire. 2 Near Soberton there is a significant change in geology to deposited material, principally London Clay and Reading Sand. These deposits dominate the Meon catchment south of Soberton Heath until the river enters the sea at Titchfield Haven.

  • The Hampshire Epidemic of Foot-And-Mouth Disease, 1967
    J. Hyg., Camb. (1973), 71, 15 15 Printed in Great Britain The Hampshire epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease, 1967 BY R. F. SELLERS AND A. J. FORMAN Animal Virus Research Institute, Pirbright, Woking, Surrey (Received 15 May 1972) SUMMARY An analysis was made of the spread of foot-and-mouth disease during the epidemic in Hampshire in January and February 1967. To explain the pattern of spread, it had to be postulated that virus was present seven days before the first outbreak was reported. It is suggested that the disease occurred initially in pigs fed on infected meat and that the virus was subsequently disseminated from the local abattoir, where the pigs were killed, to four farms by movement of animals, slaughterhouse waste, people or vehicles, and to fifteen by the airborne route. Subsequent spread from these farms was by movement in two instances and by the airborne route in five. The source and route of infection of the last farm in the outbreak were not determined. The risk of spread through movement was associated more with carriage of infected slaughterhouse waste, movement of animals, people or vehicles carrying animals than through collection of milk, artificial insemination or movement of other types of vehicles. Outbreaks of disease among pigs gave rise to more secon- dary spread than outbreaks in cattle. Secondary outbreaks attributed to airborne spread occurred only in ruminants. Most airborne spread was into areas of high livestock density and cattle in the larger herds became infected. Airborne spread could be correlated with wind direction and speed but not with rain.

LAND TO THE SOUTH OF FUNTLEY ROAD FUNTLEY FAREHAM Report By Richard Wright - 01329 824758 Introduction The Council's position on 5-year housing land supply was challenged by way of planning appeal at a site in Cranleigh Road Portchester (Ref: APP/A1720/W/16/3156344) in April last year with the appeal decision issued in August. In deciding that planning appeal the Inspector concluded that the Council's housing requirements should be based upon Objectively Assessed Housing Need, not the housing requirements set out in Local Plan Parts 1 and 2. On this basis the Inspector concluded that the Council's housing land supply position was little more than 2 years. Finding that Fareham Borough Council does not have a 5YHLS represents a significant material change in planning circumstances. The most significant implication of the Council's current position on 5YHLS is that the approach that the Council must take in determining applications for residential development will have to be altered until the Council can robustly demonstrate that it has a 5YHLS. The approach which will need to be undertaken was set out in detail in the report titled 'How proposals for residential development should be considered in the context of this Council's 5 year housing land supply position' presented to the Planning Committee on the 15th November 2017.
