PRESIDENT’S REPORT

What a whirlwind the 2014/15 season was!!

From the moment the new Committee took at the AGM in May right through until the Annual Awards night in April, it has been all systems go.

As a Committee we had very open and honest discussions about Langwarrin CC as a whole- what we do well, areas of improvement, opportunities that exist, and also threats to our club. From here we built 4 key focus areas for the season: 1) 60th Anniversary Celebration- I think everyone will agree it was one of the great weekends in the club’s history, and gave us the template for engaging past players and supporters 2) Sponsorship- An area that clearly needed to improve, both from incoming revenue and also our relationships with existing partners. While we still have a way to go, we have taken a big step forward in both facets. 3) Financial Stability- We have transparent and up to the minute records, allowing us to understand areas to improve and ways to monitor our expenditure more closely. Our goal is to make smart decisions and always think about future impact of spending, not just the here and now. 4) Senior Coaching Structure- Understand our current setup better and decide if it was the direction we wanted to take going forward.

The 2014/15 season has been full of on and off field highlights. Three senior premierships is a tremendous result, and I’d like to take this opportunity to again congratulate victorious captains Craig Morrow, Mat Stevenson and Rick Quadara.

Another highlight was the 300th First XI game of Simon McEvoy. In every sense of the word Simon truly is a legend of this club and this was extremely obvious with the amount of support he received from both current and past players.

Undoubtedly one of the jewels in Langwarrin CC’s crown over the past two seasons has been Pink Stumps Day. To not only support such a terrific cause in the McGrath Foundation, but to also raise over $15,000 is something that we should all be extremely proud of. To Danielle, Meagan, Stevee-Lee, Brooke, Kelli and all the army of helpers to make an event of this magnitude a reality, a very sincere Thank-You.

The 2014/15 committee was a terrific group of people willing to get their hands dirty when needed, take on tasks out of their comfort zone and also make level-headed decisions for the good of our club. I do not want to make individual mentions as they all equally deserve credits for their contributions. It has been an absolute delight to work with you all and I hope you got as much out of your involvement as I did teaming up with you to make our club a better place. I’d like you to take the time to seek these committee members out and say ‘Thanks’ for their efforts, as I’m sure that will mean a great deal to them.

Our sponsors are the lifeblood of our club and without them we simply would not exist. It has been terrific getting to know them all individually, and to understand their business purpose and goals. I’d like to thank them for their investment in Langwarrin CC, particularly in these tough economic times. We will work extremely hard to not only continually improve our relationship with them, but to also assist them in growing with the support of our enormous network. As a club we must continue to improve in thinking of our sponsors and at very minimum giving them the opportunity to win your business.

Langwarrin Cricket Club 2014/2015 Annual Report

The size of our Junior program is the envy of many neighbouring clubs, and this is not possible without the outstanding work of everyone involved. Our coaches all did a great job helping our next crop of stars enjoy the game and learn the valuable skills required. There is no greater sigh walking into Lloyd Park and seeing youngsters everywhere in Langwarrin CC clothing, smiling and genuinely enjoying themselves.

A club with a senior playing group of our size is an extremely difficult proposition, and the completion of the 2014/15 season also brought to an end the tenure of Mark Cooper as our Captain/Coach. After taking over a senior group in transition from previous successes, Mark was not only able to gel a new group together, but also take them to Premiership success in his first season. A finals berth back in Provincial the year later followed, and this season the First XI lost just four games and missed the finals. In many other years that record would have locked away a top four spot. Mark has done outstanding job during his tenure, and the full legacy of his work may not be fully felt for a few years as our exciting crop of young players continue to take steps forward. Mark will forever be etched in Langwarrin CC history as being a premiership Captain/Coach, something that he should be very proud of. Thank you also to his right-hand man Dwayne Doig who has been Mark’s rock of support while also being an elite player for this club.

The new Committee will get together very soon and build our goals for the upcoming season; however I want to put it on the record publically that an immediate area of focus will be our Junior program. We understand how big the Junior playing group is, and that includes families, siblings and friends. It is our intention to take it to the next level in terms of how we engage you, have you spending more time at our club and also playing a role in shaping the future. Watch this space…

While we should never drink our own bath water, we should also take a moment to reflect on how great the Langwarrin Cricket Club is. It’s a family club, a safe and inclusive environment for everyone, and also a local community group with big plans going forward. It can sometimes appear as though the small issues are much greater than what they actually are, but please be assured that we will continually work hard to improve and grow. We’ve been very clear and open in our goals and aspirations and will continue to do so. If you think you can offer a small amount of your time in any way, or have an interest in shaping the future of this club, we’d love to hear from you.

The 2014/15 season has been a truly memorable one for the Langwarrin Cricket Club, and we look forward to creating even more memories next season.

COACH’S REPORT

It was another big season with a lot going on as always at this large and proud club. 3 years has passed since being appointed and time has gone fast. I thought this would be a good time to reflect on what I was employed by the club to come in to develop and implement. I have itemised the achievements that we as a coaching group, playing group, the 3 presidents in Gary Rees, Rob Prosser and Jack Heverin and the support by the various committee members during this time: 1. We have improved and evolved training standards to where we they are now. Been able to cater for our 4 main groups of trainers. Our group of under 25's, our group of plus 35' that play in the top 4 grades, our 5ths and our lower grade players 2. On field success - moving to provincial after the 1st year, playing finals the second year and having the same win/loss record in the 3rd year but just missing out on finals. 3. Engaging our under 21 players when I was appointed. In my brief they were disengaged, just using us for a game and wanted the world without putting much in. Now the cricket club has become the hub of their social life. A lot more people back on a Thurs/Sat than when I first started 4. Transitioning from our older, experienced guys and turning over our list to our younger generation. Positions in our order from rounds 1 to 4 positions 3 to 8 were filled with batsmen 23 years or younger. This will continue to be an ongoing process 5. Incorporated some strong links with other clubs through our preseason of 2 practice games, now against Berwick and Dandenong, as well as our 20/20 season with Berwick, Casey, Cardinia, Pearcedale and our Peacock Cup 6. Moved to a match committee and a complete selection criteria to suit our playing list. Tried to get away from names and worry about the structure of the team and like for like players when making changes. Also the implementation of a project player for all grades to provide a pathway for our younger players with some huge success in fast tracking them 7. Been able to engage the community with our first ever coaching clinic for our juniors and prospective junior players 8. Playing together as a unit and playing in the right spirit. No sledging, engaging with the opposition after the game, a strong fines system to lighten the mood etc. 9. Being able to manage the entire playing group as best as possible. It is a time consuming and at times a difficult process being a large club with most being local, home grown people that have a large say with the club and what happens around the club

JUNIOR CO-ORDINATORS’ REPORT

I would like to thank all the coaches and Parents who volunteered their time to make this year a successful one both on and off the field. It makes a co-ordinators job a lot easier when you have excellent people around you.

This year the MPCA decided to play U16 on a Friday night which worked extremely well for our U16s This season we fielded 1 x U16s 2 x U14 2 xU12s and 3 x U10s .The increase in U10s sides from 1 last season to 3 this seasons was directly contributed to our Milo program which saw a flow on effect from last year Milo through to U10s this season.

Like to thank all the coaches who did great job, Jamie Jewiss, Greg Talbot and Darren Guinea coaching the under 12s, Paul Morrow u16, Peter Edwards and Ricky Ramsdale coaching the U14s and Craig Hunter. Paul Poulios and Matt Sossi who coached the U10s.

Milo cricket was a great success again this year with over 45 kids and hopefully many will come back and play in our 10s sides next season. This year we decided to again run a barbeque every Friday night in conjunction with Friday night milo cricket and U10 games.

Congratulations to all the junior award winners on their achievements especially Jai Elcock on winner the junior club Champion

TEAM REPORTS

FIRSTS

As season 2014/15 has come to an end with our 3rds, 4ths and 5ths winning the flag and our 2nds playing in the semi-final, the firsts having the same record as the previous season but narrowly missing out and the one day having a good social season, it is a good time to reflect on the season we had from the playing side of things.

Preparations for the season started in April and May with a couple of leadership meetings designed to sort out the on field and working out things to improve and to continue to challenge us coaches and the playing group. The 3 big changes that were identified from these meetings were: • Our training and in particular the structure of training, with a specific focus on specific skill development and the technical part of the game • More competitive against the top teams • A new selection criteria that catered more specifically for our playing group

Again 2014/15 round 1 saw 5 changes from the semi-final loss the year before. We have had this kind of turnover each year in the ones since I took over 3 years ago. Our first 4 games saw a 2 and 2 win loss record, the same position as last year, with our batsmen from positions 3 to 8 in these games being 24 or under. Both the losses were against the previous seasons finalists and saw us bowl both of these teams out which we were unable to do last year. 2 more wins leading into Christmas saw us positioned well to try and make finals. The round 6 win being very special as it was a great team effort against the eventual premiers.

After the Christmas break we thought 3 more wins and we might able enough to sneak in like we did last year. We again played some good cricket and blooded some future stars along the way. We saw the debuts of Joel Bateman and Andrew Smith and both showed great promise for the future.

We went into round 11 with a win/loss record of 7 and 3 but unable to make the finals. Our last up effort was really commendable and a true credit to the players that walked out to play Peninsula Old Boys. It went down to the wire and lost in the last over.

The younger players again showed more improvement in senior cricket. Andy Johnson was more consistent with the bat, Matt Prosser showed what lies ahead, especially with his individual performance against Moorooduc, Jake D’Atri was a good addition in all facets of the game, Tay Smith and his first full season of keeping really stepped up and learnt a lot and as mentioned Joel and Andrew got a taste of one’s cricket and what it takes to be successful in this standard. There are many more players to mention in all of the grades and you know who you are. Also a congratulations to Joel Bateman on the coaches award and the most improved senior cricketer going to Josh Bateman.

Special thankyous need to be made to our biggest supporters in the firsts. Firstly to Tim Harper for his commitment over the 3 years. From a team managers role, to 12th man duties, to preparing our afternoon teas, to being a part of our warm ups, and all of this as a volunteer for all of our home and away fixtures, we all thank you enormously. To Roger for his valued contribution as our scorer. He does a fantastic job and makes all of our jobs that much easier playing in the firsts. Lastly to everyone that has come to watch, spend some time with the team, sponsored the club or been a part of our setup in any small or large way we and I thank you for this continued support.

25th May 2015 Page 16

Langwarrin Cricket Club 2014/2015 Annual Report I believe as the outgoing coach that Langwarrin CC are in a strong position to take the next step and start beating these top teams more often. I wish Travis Campbell and the rest of the playing group all the successes we have had over the last 3 years and many more.

SECONDS

2014/15 was not without its challenges during the course of the year, however I am very proud of the way the 2nd eleven performed for the season as a whole.

After winning 5 consecutive premierships and taking over the captaincy from Al Davie at the start of the season I was confident that our 2nd eleven side would be very competitive. Like any other year, the 2nd eleven was about preparing our young and upcoming cricketers for 1st eleven cricket. This was not only helping them to improve their cricketing skill sets, but also guiding them in game preparation, game sense and of course, attitude. It was important as a new leader to continue to build on the foundations left by Al Davie and Gary Rees in playing the game in the right competitive spirit. I wanted opposition teams to approach us not only as a difficult team to beat, but also a highly respected team too – be proud to be a player of the Langwarrin Cricket Club.

Choose your attitude – is yours worth catching? This was what I wanted to see from our players each week. This was to be our formula towards success. This is what can distinguish you from playing 1st eleven cricket and playing in finals and premierships.

With a significant change in playing stocks compared to last year (up to 5 new players now promoted to the ones or retiring) our team at the start of the year took some time to find the right balance. As we were heading into the Christmas break we were sitting in the top 2 with other top 5 sides awaiting us in the New Year. It was there that the challenge went down to the playing group on making a statement to the rest of the competition leading into a finals series – Let’s show everyone why we are the reigning premiers.

A great team camaraderie, knowing our strengths, weaknesses and approaching each game with commitment and a can do attitude saw us head into the last game of the home away season with top spot secured. This was still at a time where we at least had one change to the side each game. As a result our batting line up was never settled.

There were some significant achievements during the season with great team and individual performances from both our younger and senior players. Highlights included: • Finishing the Home & Away Season 1st • Highest ‘Runs For’ (2416) in competition • Winning 8 games for the season – 1 win clear of 2nd. • Andrew Smith, Joel Bateman making their 1st eleven debut • Aaron Edwards over 300 runs in a season • Sam Prosser, Josh Mack making their debut in the 2nd eleven • Nathan Volpe 102 no vs Mornington • Jack Heverin selection in 1st eleven after ankle surgery in 2013/14 • Aaron Edwards winning the fielding award • Jack Heverin winning the batting average

Finishing on top spot assured us of a home final week 1. We approached the game with confidence, however we can up against a very strong bowling attack in Pines. As stated above our batting line up was rarely settled during the year and with finals selection came the problem of trying to fit 3 young opening bowlers into the team. We did this knowing that our bowling attack could dismiss any side cheaply but our batting line up would be a little thin. Unfortunately for us we came up against a very strong bowling side in Pines who bowled consistently in the right areas and made it very difficult to score. We batted over 75 overs and scored 125 on a slow ground. I can say with confidence that at no stage did our guys think we could not win. Their attitude overnight and the following morning before going out to defend was first rate. We had belief.

25th May 2015 Page 18

Langwarrin Cricket Club 2014/2015 Annual Report Our bowlers left nothing on the table. We had some questionable decisions not go our way which could have had Pines in trouble at 4/30. However from there the game began to slip away and when we lost Mick Edwards to a finger injury, the odds were stacked against us. In hindsight we needed another 25 runs – we just didn’t have enough.

Post-game debrief was simple. The message being that ‘to understand success, you need to understand defeat’ and we all needed to take aspects of the game away that we can learn from and become better cricketers.

I would like to thank my Vice Captain Pete Edwards for his support and advice during the year – it was a learning experience for both of us and with other distractions happening at the club at various times, it was great to just get out on a Saturday afternoon and play cricket with Pete and our team mates.

To Mark Cooper, Nathan Volpe, coaching staff and team captains, thanks for all of your support during the year. I would also like to thank Jack Heverin and the LCC committee for their dedication and hard work during the year.

Finally, I would like to stress that even though the 2nd eleven did not win the premiership this year (after 5 straight!) the team structure we have with a balanced mix of youth and experience should not be underestimated. It is the cornerstone for our young cricketers to learn from our senior cricketers on the job. This can be in the form of batting in the middle, bowling, setting fields, tactics, fitness – attitude! The list can go on, but it is why we have had a successful 2nd eleven with the goal of breeding success and temperament to go on and play 1st eleven cricket. I can assure you that we are still the envy of every other club in the competition when it comes to this team model.

In closing I would like to welcome Travis Campbell to the club and look forward to Langwarrin CC again being a competition leader in Provincial Cricket in 2015/16.

THIRDS

First of all I would like to thank the committee for the effort that they put in on a weekly basis to ensure that we get to play a game we love every Saturday (and Sunday when it counts).

To all of the players that in the 3rd XI this year thank you for you effort every week and the good humour that you played the game in each week. Some of the individual highlights include James Harker 104 against Somerville, Jamie Jewiss 101* against Heatherhill, Travis Whelan 84 against French Island, Alan Davie 76 against Tyabb, Josh Bateman 57 against Somerville and Riley Davie with 57 against Mt Eliza in the Grand Final. In all we had 10 Players with a average of over 20 which just goes to show their commitment to the game each week.

The best performances with the ball were Stephen Perry with 5/35 against Delacombe Park and 6/30 against Balnarring in the Semi Final, Josh Mack with 5/34 against Long Island and Jamie Jewiss with 6/17 against Mt Eliza in the Grand Final. We had 6 players with an average of less than 20 which was a great team effort every week.

Congratulations to Jamie Jewiss who took out the Batting award with 342 runs @42.75 and Stephen Perry on the bowling award with 31 wickets @10.15.

With such great individual performances happening with bat and ball on a consistent basis we managed to finish on top of the ladder with only one loss for the season. Semi Final weekend against Balnarring we won the toss and batted first to end up all out for 151 with Matt Reddaway(27), Josh Bateman(16) and Riley Davie(31) pushing us to a competitive total after being 5/58. Our turn to bowl and Stephen Perry tore through the top taking 6 of the first 7 wickets to finish with 17.4 overs 6 for 30 to hand us a comfortable victory dismissing Balnarring for 74.

A Grand Final re-match awaited us the following week against arch rival Mt Eliza, after winning the toss and batting we slumped to 8/117 with only Jamie Jewiss standing up with 53. Enter the young guns Josh Mack (14) and Riley Davie (57) with a superb partnership 73 to carry us to 191 which anyone knows is a very good score in a Grand Final. After a nights rest it our turn to bowl the next day and it wasn’t a great start with us putting down 4 early chances the managed to get to 4/135 shortly after tea and going along nicely although they still needed to score at 4 runs an over and enter the young quick Riley Davie and the very experienced Jamie Jewiss to bowl them out for 155. It was an awesome bowling partnership with Riley bowling sharp and lots of dot balls which meant that they had to score runs of the smartest bowler in local cricket Jamie who produced wickets at regular intervals to finish with 6/17 of 7.4 overs and we were Back-to-Back Premiers.

The best thing about the season was the performances of the Young blokes throughout the year with all of them contributing each and every game hopefully they learnt a few things along the way and will play a lot higher for this great club in the years to come.

Lastly I would like to thank Gary Rees for all of his help through the season from taking the reins while I was out injured to offering up his house during the finals for recovery sessions and for the constant phone calls during the weeks to discuss ideas and selections, we would not of achieved this without you Gaz thanks mate.

FOURTHS

I would like to thank the Langwarrin Cricket Club Executive Committee for giving me the opportunity to captain our Fourth XI team in 2014/15. I am delighted to report that our team was able to secure the first premiership for Langwarrin in the A2 Grade. This is certainly an achievement that our team will cherish. We are proud to play for the Langwarrin Cricket Club, and very thankful to be a part of such a strong and loyal community. This was a premiership built on character, collaboration and hard work; driven by a dedicated group of selfless cricketers united to achieving the ultimate goal. I am very proud of every player who represented us in the Grand Final, and all 23 players who represented the side throughout the year.

The year started on a moderate level with our side breaking for Christmas outside the top 4. The turning point came after Christmas before the Seaford game, when our Vice Captain Steve Brooker called for a team meeting to realign our expectations. Steve challenged the group not to drop another game for the rest of the year and for every Individual in the team to step up. The meeting really galvanised the unit, and we went on to achieve our goal of winning 7 games in a row. Heading into the finals, having finished third, meant we had to play 2 away finals; travelling to Tootgarook (Semi) and Pines (GF). If 2 away finals weren’t challenging enough, I lost both coin tosses requiring us to bowl first in both the Semi Final and Grand Final. The most gratifying aspect of this Premiership is the fact we did it the hard way, highlighting the character of the team; and the determination of the players to create lifelong memories.

In the Semi Final our bowlers were on fire with Jacob Brooker ripping through Tootgarook with 5 wickets, superbly assisted by Aubrey De Silva, Damien Wust, Dan Bray and Jarred Bartlett. We rolled them for 103, and chased down the runs before the close of play on day 1, putting the game beyond doubt. Dan Bray with 65 and Jacob Brooker with 41 did the bulk of the damage. Both players had superb games, and were the lynch pins in a wonderful team performance. A special mention has to go to Birchy for icing the result with 2 big sixes.

The Grand Final was almost a carbon copy of the game against Tootgarook, steamrolling the Pines batting line up for 99. Damien Wust and Dan Bray taking 3 wickets each with Aubrey De Silva setting the tone with the new pill, bowling tight and taking 2 wickets. Travis Whelan stepped up with the bat with a man of the match innings of 53. Travis was supported well by Jacob Brooker (21), Dan Bray (20) and Mat Stevenson (25). Again this was an excellent team effort with standout performances from Travis Whelan, Dan Bray, Aubrey De Silva, Damien Wust and Jacob Brooker.

There were plenty of personal milestones throughout the year to celebrate: 1. Daniel Bray’s highest score of 156 not out. 2. Dan Holden’s First career century of 130. Dan was 49 not out overnight, and unable to play the following week due to his lovely wife’s 40th birthday party. Luckily for Dan, Chrissy let him out to play for a few hours so he could secure his first ton. Chrissy, Dan owes you a drink or too, and so do we 3. Craig Edwards 102 against Seaford, capping off a great year with the bat. 4. Jacob Brooker’s bowling highlights 5/30 against Ballam Park and 5/46 in the Semi Final. 5. Justin Birch, Jarred Bartlett and Jacob Brooker’s first Grand Final Victory was the biggest driver this year for me. 6. Mitch Reid’s passion and commitment during the finals campaign, really gave his team mates a boost. 7. Nadia Wust and her outstanding efforts as scorer and supporter were very much appreciated. Thank you Nadia.

25th May 2015 Page 21

Langwarrin Cricket Club 2014/2015 Annual Report 8. Mal Reid’s effort in the Iron Man the week after the Grand Final, and the way the team galvanised to support Mal. This really consolidated how tight the group is. 9. We had 2 Father/Son combinations in the team this year of Mitch and Mal Reid and Steven and Jacob Brooker. This was extremely rewarding for us all and meant so much to proud dad’s Mal and Steve.

A Team highlight to remember was the bus trip to Rosebud. “What goes on tour stays on tour”. Another team highlight was the use of social media (Messenger) as a platform to communicate and bond throughout the year. This was a great way to unite when we were not training or playing.

On a personal note the team would like to thank our partners and children for the sacrifices they made this year, in supporting us to play the game we love. I would like to recognise Clint McKneil for his efforts in the early stages of the year. I would like to thank the following players for assisting us this year: Harry Boyle, Hayden Brooker, James Harker, Greg Talbot, Nick Brunton, Scott Weir, Steve Bown, Mitch Trewin, Riley Trewin, Rob Davy and Clint McKneil.

We would also like to congratulate our 3rd and 5th XI’s on their premierships, and all other players on good years.

Finally, it has been a thrill to Captain the 4 XI team, and I hope to see everyone back next year for continued success.

Regards Mat Stevenson

FIFTHS

Firstly I'd like to congratulate the Langwarrin Cricket Club on an outstanding year both on and off the field. Six teams with four in finals and to come away with three premierships is unbelievable so again well done. To my boys well done on winning the grand final it topped off a great season. We had a great time through the year with a lot of laughs and shit-stirring to be had and led by no other than our superstar batsman and bowler Adam Metters who had a fantastic year.

Some great accomplishments this year led by no other than the worst cricketer I have ever seen Chris Aedy a double century and so many other hundreds well done mate but you are still a shit cricketer. To the rest of the boys well done great team great mates had a ball. I will finish off by congratulating Greg Talbot on a remarkable year opening the batting without your hundred in the grand final I dare say it could have been a different outcome on the day. It was flawless mate you dug deep and smashed them all over the ground without a chance given I almost wanted to kiss you.

Bring on 2015/2016, go Langy!

Rick Quadara 5th XI Captain.

SIXTHS

The 6th XI this season was the first time in a few years that we fielded a one day team to give an opportunity to all players who wanted a game but couldn’t commit to two day cricket on a consecutive week basis.

We played in a very strong grade against some players very capable of playing 1st/2nd XI cricket. While we were not the most talented side we gave our all each game and enjoyed both the game and each other’s company throughout the season. Finals were never realistically a goal for us but we did generally beat those teams that we matched up well against. Our final standing of 7th out of 10 was a fair reflection of our talent/ability compared to those around us.

Our team was able to introduce back some returning players in Matthew Green and Todd Elcock and we also gave a few new comers in Darren Guinea, Nick Brunton, Luke Powell and Scott Weir their first taste of cricket at Langwarrin. It’s always good to have some new blood in and around the club so I personally hope to see you all representing Langwarrin next season.

We were also able to give a taste of senior cricket to a few promising junior cricketers in Jai Elcock, Mitch Trewin, Sam Green, Jessie Peacock and Zac Mussared who helped us to not only put a team on the park but also contributed on the field.

There were a few individual performances that were worth highlighting: • Josh Burgess taking a hat-trick in our first game that almost stole a miraculous win for us • Zac Mussared scoring 70 in an opening stand of 130 against a powerful Ballam Park team • Jai Elcock taking 6/18 to help skittle YCW for 31. • Sam Green with 5/25 to get us over the line with a small score to defend against Long Island. • Todd Elcock winning our batting award with some fantastic middle order knocks of great power. • Chris Baker winning the bowling award, generally knocking over the oppositions best batsmen and all off a two-step run up. • Matt Green who took out our fielding award with a hunger to stop every ball and take every catch.

Though finals cricket was not on the agenda for us this season it was a pleasure for all of us to be able to watch our 3rd, 4th and 5th XI teams all win premierships.

On behalf of the Captain by Committee group of Josh Burgess, Chris Bartlett, Chris Baker and I, thank you.
