MORNINGTON PENINSULA CRICKET ASSOCIATION UNDER 15’s United Kingdom Tour June 17th – July 7th 2006 Tour Report On arrival in London we stayed in the Grange Hotel in Kensington The Grange Hotel – Kensington. On the Underground going to Lords. The Lords Visit by Zac Brown On the second day of the tour, we visited the home of cricket “Lords”. At about 10:00 we all assembled down stairs and made our way to the train station. We caught the tube from Gloucester station to St Johns Wood. We then walked about 2 km to Lords, just missing the 12pm tour so we had to wait until 2pm. We found the Lords tavern bar and settled in. Most had lunch and my dad had his first English pint. While waiting, there was a county match on between Surrey and some one being televised which helped the time pass. At 1.30 we made our way to the museum. The gate fellow freaked out when we slipped down the gap in the stands and actually stood on the turf. He came racing down saying “I can’t believe it. You’re doing exactly what you’re not supposed to”. We looked through the museum. The dads with MCC memberships did the tour for free. It was the largest tour our guide had ever taken, believing it to be around 100 people. The museum was great. Exhibits from WG Grace, Bradman and of course the Ashes Earn. There were lots of pictures taken. It was funny locking at the old bats and seeing how far we’ve come none of the bats in the museum had graffite strips and also the sparrow killed by a ball bowled here in England. We toured the Long room, Committee room and the player’s dressing room, standing on the balcony where you see the players sitting during cricket matches at Lords. We then made our way around to the press box – the ugly bubble, or space ship looking object opposite the members stand. Lords was named after Thomas Lord who ran the tavern at the old ground and looked after the oval for the committee, made up of viscounts, lords and others. Game number one MPCA verse London Schools 19/06/2006 The first game of the tour was against the London Schools at Southgate, MPCA Captain Luke Marshall lost the toss and London Schools elected to bat first on flat well- worn wicket. Mitch Drummond (2/31) and Andy Mathers (0/15) opened the bowling; London Schools were in early trouble at 3/29 off 12 overs, which included a superb, run out by Robbie Clements. The score moved to 97 off 27 overs before Justin Cleary (2/37) got the break through, tight bowling from Jake Middleton (0/11) and Robbie Clements (1/1) helped restrict London Schools to 148 off 43 overs. Bryn Wells 1/28, Luke Marshall (1/8) and Cam Macauley (1/14) also provided good support with the ball. The MPCA batting was opened by Patty Hall (9) and Andy Johnson (38) getting us off to a solid 37 run opening stand from 10 overs. With the loss of Patty Hall the Captain Luke Marshall came to the crease, this partnership produced 60 runs before Andy Johnson was adjudged LBW. We then lost a couple of quick wickets and with Luke Marshall retiring on 55 the situation became tense. Some late hitting by Jake Middleton (31) and Nathan Martin (15) got us across the line and at the completion of 45 overs we ended up with a final score of 6/213. A great team effort and fantastic start to the MPCA Under 15 2006 England Tour. Team Photo after match verse London Schools. Luke retiring for 55 verse London School. The theory being that if the side batting gets into trouble chasing down the total, they can bat out for a draw and therefore the interest in the result is not curtailed buy a massive score in the first innings or loss of early wickets in the second inning’s. It was interesting however an experiment that we would not undertake again on the Tour. The MPCA again lost the toss and Thanet elected to bat. Mac Watson (1/17) and Zac Brown (3/33) opened the bowling. An early wicket by Zac did not curtail the Thanet batsman as they scored freely to be 1/74 of 21 overs. The run rate was stemmed by wonderful bowling partnership between Michael Whincup (1/12) and Bryn Wells (1/28) and at the 30 over mark Thanet were 3/102. At the conclusion of the 38 overs Thanet were 8/159 with other wicket takers being Justin Cleary (1/28) and Jake Middleton (1/2). Batting second and having 32 overs to chase down the score Andy Johnson (44) and Liam O’Connor (8) got the MPCA off to a solid start reaching 25 off 9 overs before Liam was dismissed. Luke Marshall joined Andy and compiled a quick fire 30 including 4 fours and two sixes. With Andy Johnson’s dismissal at 106 of 24 overs and requiring 53 runs of 48 balls the MPCA sent in the big hitters in an attempt to reduce the run rate, this failed and losing 4 wickets in 6 overs and at 8/130 captain Nathan Martin batted out the remaining overs to secure a draw.
