United Kingdom Tour June 17th – July 7th 2006 Tour Report

On arrival in London we stayed in the Grange Hotel in Kensington

The Grange Hotel – Kensington.

On the Underground going to Lords.

The Lords Visit by Zac Brown

On the second day of the tour, we visited the home of cricket “Lords”. At about 10:00 we all assembled down stairs and made our way to the train station.

We caught the tube from Gloucester station to St Johns Wood. We then walked about 2 km to Lords, just missing the 12pm tour so we had to wait until 2pm. We found the Lords tavern bar and settled in. Most had lunch and my dad had his first English pint. While waiting, there was a county match on between Surrey and some one being televised which helped the time pass.

At 1.30 we made our way to the museum. The gate fellow freaked out when we slipped down the gap in the stands and actually stood on the turf. He came racing down saying “I can’t believe it. You’re doing exactly what you’re not supposed to”. We looked through the museum. The dads with MCC memberships did the tour for free. It was the largest tour our guide had ever taken, believing it to be around 100 people.

The museum was great. Exhibits from WG Grace, Bradman and of course the Ashes Earn. There were lots of pictures taken. It was funny locking at the old bats and seeing how far we’ve come none of the bats in the museum had graffite strips and also the sparrow killed by a ball bowled here in England.

We toured the Long room, Committee room and the player’s dressing room, standing on the balcony where you see the players sitting during cricket matches at Lords. We then made our way around to the press box – the ugly bubble, or space ship looking object opposite the members stand.

Lords was named after Thomas Lord who ran the tavern at the old ground and looked after the oval for the committee, made up of viscounts, lords and others.

Game number one MPCA verse London Schools 19/06/2006

The first game of the tour was against the London Schools at Southgate, MPCA Captain Luke Marshall lost the toss and London Schools elected to bat first on flat well- worn .

Mitch Drummond (2/31) and Andy Mathers (0/15) opened the bowling; London Schools were in early trouble at 3/29 off 12 overs, which included a superb, run out by Robbie Clements. The score moved to 97 off 27 overs before Justin Cleary (2/37) got the break through, tight bowling from Jake Middleton (0/11) and Robbie Clements (1/1) helped restrict London Schools to 148 off 43 overs. Bryn Wells 1/28, Luke Marshall (1/8) and Cam Macauley (1/14) also provided good support with the ball.

The MPCA was opened by Patty Hall (9) and Andy Johnson (38) getting us off to a solid 37 run opening stand from 10 overs. With the loss of Patty Hall the Captain Luke Marshall came to the crease, this partnership produced 60 runs before Andy Johnson was adjudged LBW. We then lost a couple of quick and with Luke Marshall retiring on 55 the situation became tense. Some late hitting by Jake Middleton (31) and Nathan Martin (15) got us across the line and at the completion of 45 overs we ended up with a final score of 6/213.

A great team effort and fantastic start to the MPCA Under 15 2006 England Tour.

Game number two verse Thanet CC at the Park Avenue Ground on 22/06/2006

We were persuaded to play a game where the side batting first faces 38 overs and the side batting second faces 32 overs. The theory being that if the side batting gets into trouble chasing down the total, they can bat out for a draw and therefore the interest in the result is not curtailed buy a massive score in the first innings or loss of early wickets in the second inning’s. It was interesting however an experiment that we would not undertake again on the Tour.

The MPCA again lost the toss and Thanet elected to bat. Mac Watson (1/17) and Zac Brown (3/33) opened the bowling. An early wicket by Zac did not curtail the Thanet batsman as they scored freely to be 1/74 of 21 overs. The run rate was stemmed by wonderful bowling partnership between Michael Whincup (1/12) and Bryn Wells (1/28) and at the 30 mark Thanet were 3/102. At the conclusion of the 38 overs Thanet were 8/159 with other wicket takers being Justin Cleary (1/28) and Jake Middleton (1/2).

Batting second and having 32 overs to chase down the score Andy Johnson (44) and Liam O’Connor (8) got the MPCA off to a solid start reaching 25 off 9 overs before Liam was dismissed. Luke Marshall joined Andy and compiled a quick fire 30 including 4 fours and two sixes. With Andy Johnson’s dismissal at 106 of 24 overs and requiring 53 runs of 48 balls the MPCA sent in the big hitters in an attempt to reduce the run rate, this failed and losing 4 wickets in 6 overs and at 8/130 captain Nathan Martin batted out the remaining overs to secure a draw.

Game number three verse Daunstey School on 22/06/2006

Playing Daunstey on the pristine school oval back ground surrounded with, sound artillary from the army and airforce training camps nearby the MPCA. Today we were Captained by Patrick Hall celebrating his birthday. MPCA again lost the toss and were sent in to bat, Patty Hall and Liam O’Connor opened the batting and with the loss of Patty (8) Liam was joined by Robbie Clements and at drinks MPCA were 1/59. Liam was retired on 11 and losing a quick wicket soon after were 2/78 off 26 overs. Luke Marshall joined Robbie and both batsmen scored freely to all parts of the ground. Robbie was retired on 72 and Luke was dismissed soon after for 41. Adam Smrdel (19) and Andy Mathers (14no) pulled the score to a respectable 4/185 off our allotted 40 overs.

The bowlers never really found a good line or length in this match until it was too late and Duanstey passed our score 4 wickets down and 8 overs still to play. Daunstey were finally bowled out for 221 losing the last 6 wickets for 31 runs. The best of the bowlers were spin twins Cam Macaulay (1/8) and Justin Cleary (3/24). Other wicket takers were Zac Brown 1/34, Bryn Wells 1/29, Michael Whincup 1/13 and Andy Johnson 2/3. Andy Mathers took threes catches and Liam O’Connor two stumpings in a good fielding display.

Game number four verse South Wilts CC 23/06/2006

Game 4 was and evening 20 / 20 fixture and was a well attended match by the local community.

Captain for this match was Zac Brown and winning our first toss on tour sent South Wilts CC into to bat with all bowlers to bowl two overs each. MPCA got off to a great start having the home side 2/12 off 5 overs, then a wonderful 96 run partnership saw South Wilts close its innings after the allotted 20 overs at 4/125. Wicket takers Justin Cleary 2/23, Mac Watson 1/6 and Jake Middleton 1/7.

Losing wickets at a regular rate the MPCA side never looked like making the 125 runs required with only two batsman making double figures, Andy Mathers (11) and opener Nathan Martin 50 not out. MPCA ended up at 7/101 well short of the required total.

Game number five verse Bryanston School under 17’s on 24/06/2006

Game 5 the MPCA lost the toss against a much older and physically stronger side than our own, but the boys played with typical Aussie spirit. Having been sent into bat the innings was opened by Captain Andy Johnson and Liam O’Connor, Andy was first batsman dismissed ending the excellent opening partnership of 84, Andy made a fine 50 and Liam was out shortly after for a determined and solid 25 runs. Luke Marshall made a magnificent 69 batting until nearly the conclusion of our allotted 35 overs and at close the MPCA had made 8/208.

Opening bowlers Mac Watson (2/37) and Mitch Drummond (2/21) got the MPCA into a terrific position having Bryanston 3/51 off 12 overs. Then a combination of good batting allowed Bryanston to get back into the match at 6/150 with eight overs remaining and match on. Bryanston passed the MPCA total with eight balls remaining and finished at 6/209, the maturity and experience of the older opposition was clearly the determining factor in the final result and the performance of the MPCA under 15’s in this match was a turning point on the tour.

Loosing yet another toss the MPCA were sent into bat with openers Andy Johnson and Patty Hall getting off to a flying start, Andy falling for 45 with the score on 80 off 14 overs. Mac Watson and Patty Hall added 32 for the third wicket before Mac was dismissed for 14 and Patty retired for a well compiled 53. The middle order hit out in the closing overs with Adam Smrdel (20) Mitch Drummond (11no) and Michael Whincup (8 no) building up a respectable 4 /166 of 40 overs.

BVGS were progressing well at 2 / 85 off 18 overs until the leg spin of Cam Macaulay changed the game in three balls by claiming a hat trick, this was then followed by a great spell from Captain Mitch Drummond (2/10 off 4 overs) and at 8/101 the game was within the MPCA grasp. A magnificent ninth wicket partnership of 44 put the game in balance but with two fantastic pieces of fielding by Patty Hall and Andy Johnson obtaining two run outs ended the game with BVGS falling 10 runs short – what a game.

Game number eight verse Marsden CC Invitation XI on 30/06/2006

The Marsden CC invitation XI won the toss and elected to bat and the openers took full advantage of the quick ground and at the close of the allocated 40 overs amassed 3/281. The only wicket takers were Mitch Drummond 1/41, Bryn Wells 1/25 and Luke Marshall 1/35 and the Marsden batting was superb.

The MPCA needed a special effort to chase down this huge total and Robbie Clements and Liam O’Connor got off the a flying start losing Liam at 59 off 12 overs, Luke Marshall made a quick 20 and at drinks MPCA were 2/101. After the drinks break the MPCA lost 4 quick wickets and the chance of chasing down the score was gone. Instead of retiring Robbie Clements the boys decided that he should try and score a century as the match could not be won and although the nineties were nervous and took eight overs to negotiate Robbie Clements finished on 104 not out. At the completion on the MPCA batting the score was 8/195.

Game number eleven verse Carres Grammar on 04/07/2006

The last game of the tour was against Carres Grammar and the MPCA were sent in to bat, losing Patty Hall first ball and Andy Johnson shortly after for 9. Luke Marshall (45) and Robbie Clements (33) kept the runs flowing and Captain Nathan Martin batted superbly to make 52 not out, the final score being 7/191 of the allotted 40 overs.

The best line and length spell of bowling of the tour by Mitch Drummond 0/3 off 5 overs and supported by Zac Brown 0/8 off 5 overs set up an excellent finish to the tour. The spoils of wickets went to Jake Middleton (3/12), Michael Whincup (2/9), Cam Macaulay (2/40), Bryn Wells (1/11) and Andy Mathers (1/13) who all bowled well to have Carres Grammar all out for 102 in 32 overs.

A great finish to a great tour and the development of all of the boys game could be seen in the teams performance as the your and belief in themselves and that of their team mates was demonstrated in this game in particular.

Bryn gets another break through.
