In the PADDOCK In the PADDOCK News from the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association Barber Motorsports Park, Leeds, AL – October 8-11, 2015 Sweet Dreams at Barber eorge Barber had a dream - to have a place to drive race cars and ride motorbikes in his own state, create a park- G like setting around it, and give back to his community. Barber Motorsports Park is a dream come true. Mr. Barber was racing sports cars in Europe back in the 1970s, when his father died suddenly. He had no choice but to give up his passion for racing and focus on running the family business – Barber Dairy Company. Barber Dairies started in the 1930s. The dairy housed a large ice plant, which produced enough ice to keep the pasteurized milk, buttermilk, butter, cottage cheese and other dairy products cold on company delivery trucks. As the oldest dairy in Alabama, Barber Dairies has a respected history of delivering the best in dairy products in Alabama and parts of Mississippi, Georgia and Florida. Staying true to his love of motor vehicles, Bar- ber began collecting and restoring classic cars in Above, Barber Dairies milk truck and advertise- 1989, but his interest soon ment. It was the spark for the Barber collection, whose mission was to reflect the history of motorcycles from a global perspective. The collection soon grew out of its space in an old warehouse in Birmingham and needed a new home. Fast forward to 2003 and after many years of hard work and planning Geroge Barber’s dream of a place for his love of motorsports came to fruition. Barber Motorsports Park is a world-renowned facil- ity and hosts a number of world-class motorsports events such as the AMA Superbike Classic, IMSA sports cars, Legends of Motorsports, kart racing and the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. The 2 Do Come True Motorsports Park spectator-friendly circuit is set within a perfectly manicured and sculpted landscape with heavily wooded surroundings that is second to none. The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in its current form is located on the premises of the lovely Barber Motorsports Park, and now currently houses 1400+ motorcycles. It is considered the largest motorcycle museum in the world, with the greatest vintage Lotus racecar collection in N. America. With over 7000 motorcycle books and more, the Barber Museum Research Library & Archives contains one of the largest collections of motorcycle literature in the world. Our AHRMA races at Barber Motorsports park are divided up in many ways – roadracing, cross country, vintage motocross and trials events. On the roadracing side, the age of the motorcycles, displacement, brands, even sidecars and a taste of the future with electric-powered eMotoRacing bikes, are all showcased. Take a walk through the paddock to see all of the bikes up-close. Our motorbike pilots range in age from “newbies” in their 20s to experienced veterans in their 70s. This weekend of vintage motorcycle racing will undoubtedly renew excitement for these historical machines, while providing lively competition for all. 3 Fast LINES The paddock Watch for... In most cases, 'permanent' is synonymous with 'purpose-built'. However, some circuits were not purpose-built but actually started out as tempo- rary courses. Florida's Sebring International Raceway, for example, was originally a temporary airfield course, laid out over the runways of Hendricks Field. Likewise, Portland International Raceway in Oregon evolved from a street course. Both circuits are nowadays permanent facilities. The starting point for this list was the 2003 edition of Allan Brown's book "A History of America's Speedways: Past & Present". This is an indispensable reference work for which Allan cannot be praised enough. However, in the book the road courses are a bit buried between the vast number of ovals. Listing them separately gives a better overview. Also, I found the information in the book is not always accurate. It is an excellent basis for further research but the data should be treated with great care. I have done my best to present the most correct and accurate info in this file, although there may well be errors here and there. In general, there are three main types of American road courses. The most interesting are the 'pure' road courses which were built specifically for road racing.

  • Racing Towards a Sustainable Future a Review of the Sustainability Performance of International Racing Circuits
RACING TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE A REVIEW OF THE SUSTAINABILITY PERFORMANCE OF INTERNATIONAL RACING CIRCUITS Edition June 2021 Racing towards a sustainable future FOREWORD I have been involved with the safety and sustainability of racing tracks for many years now, as a driver, GPDA Chairman and a circuit designer. And while I would argue that big improvements have been made in terms of safety, I also know that there is a long way to go in terms of fully embracing sustainability for racing tracks around the globe. Though circuits have started to change the way in which they approach sustainability, more guidance on what sustainability means and how a circuit can be sustainable are needed. This is why I welcome this new research and the data-driven proposal of the Sustainable Circuits Index™, highlighting indicators from the wider sustainability and sport ecosystem, encouraging best practice and calling attention to the importance of transparent reporting and independent validation. Motorsport has historically been defined by its commitment to innovation and excellence through competition. It’s now critically important for our sport to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability through collaboration. This paper highlights the new metrics for success in this global effort and provides circuits with the tools they need to help win the race for our planet, a race which we can only win together. Alexander Wurz Former F1 Driver, GPDA Chairman, and Consultant on Road Safety and Circuit Design Sustainability is one of the key issues of today’s society as confirmed by the increasing attention of governments, media, academics, and industry.

‘THE MAYOR’ REIGNS AT LONG BEACH: James Hinchcliffe became the second winner of 2017 as he held off points leader Sebastien Bourdais to claim the victory at Long Beach on April 9. It was the fi rst win for Hinch since his return from an life-threatening crash at Indianapolis in 2015 and lifted him into second in the in the Verizon IndyCar Series point standings. Hinchcliffe trails Bourdais by 19 points heading into this weekend’s Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. Chris Owens/INDYCAR PHOTO WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEKEND: •TEAM PENSKE LOOKS TO CONTINUE BARBER DOMINATION: Team Penske has won four of the seven Verizon IndyCar Series races at Barber Motorsports Park, including last year’s race with Simon Pagenaud. Team owner Roger Penske will look to add another trophy to his team’s collection during the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama with a lineup of drivers who have each visited victory lane at the track. • NEWGARDEN’S HOME TRACK: Josef Newgarden isn’t from Alabama, but he considers Barber Motorsports Park to be his home track. The former Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama winner hails from Nashville, Tennessee, a few hours away from the “Augusta of Motorsports,” where he claimed his fi rst Indy car win. Can Newgarden repeat in front of friends and family and score some more home cooking for Team Penske? • HUNTER-REAY GOES FOR A ALABAMA HAT-TRICK: Ryan Hunter-Reay is one of only two drivers to keep Team Penske out of victory lane at Barber Motorsports Park with wins in 2013 and 2014.
