A Revolta Mendes Norton De 1935

Anneke Jans' Maternal Grandfather and Great Grandfather
Anneke Jans’ Maternal Grandfather and Great Grandfather By RICIGS member, Gene Eiklor I have been writing a book about my father’s ancestors. Anneke Jans is my 10th Great Grandmother, the “Matriarch of New Amsterdam.” I am including part of her story as an Appendix to my book. If it proves out, Anneke Jans would be the granddaughter of Willem I “The Silent” who started the process of making the Netherlands into a republic. Since the records and info about Willem I are in the hands of the royals and government (the Royals are buried at Delft under the tomb of Willem I) I took it upon myself to send the Appendix to Leiden University at Leiden. Leiden University was started by Willem I. An interesting fact is that descendants of Anneke have initiated a number of unsuccessful attempts to recapture Anneke’s land on which Trinity Church in New York is located. In Chapter 2 – Dutch Settlement, page 29, Anneke Jans’ mother was listed as Tryntje (Catherine) Jonas. Each were identified as my father’s ninth and tenth Great Grandmothers, respectively. Since completion of that and succeeding chapters I learned from material shared by cousin Betty Jean Leatherwood that Tryntje’s husband had been identified. From this there is a tentative identification of Anneke’s Grandfather and Great Grandfather. The analysis, the compilation and the writings on these finds were done by John Reynolds Totten. They were reported in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Volume LVI, No. 3, July 1925i and Volume LVII, No. 1, January 1926ii Anneke is often named as the Matriarch of New Amsterdam. -
The Engine of the Republic: the Presidential Cars PRESENTATION
The Engine of the Republic: The Presidential Cars PRESENTATION The museum collection The Engine of the Republic – The Presidential Cars came about as a result of a challenge issued by the Museum of Transport and Communications to the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic. The challenge, which was immediately accepted, was to create a permanent exhibit that would make it possible for the public to visit, assembled and preserved, one of the most important collections of cars in the country: those that have been in the service of its presidents since the founding of the Republic, over 100 years ago. This collection also reflects an awareness that the vehicles exhibited here are part of a historical heritage. As such, they are no longer disposed of once decommissioned, but become part of the collection of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic. The job of recording, locating and recovering the cars that were used by the presidents of the Republic, an ongoing task, has been a priority of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic practically since its inception, as already demonstrated by a group of temporary exhibitions: beginning in 2004, to coincide with the opening of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic, and continuing over the course of subsequent years, in Porto, Lisbon, Figueira da Foz and Guimarães. Siting this collection in Porto also contributes to the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic’s aim of decentralising its activity, bringing part of its collection to the north of the country, a region with a great tradition of car collecting. -

NATIONAL PALACE OF BELÉM Classified as a national monument in 2007, Belém Palace became the seat of the presidency after 1910. With a history spanning more than five centuries, Belém Palace has served as the official residence of the President of the Republic since the election of the first President, Manuel de Arriaga. In the mid-sixteenth century, D. Manuel of Portugal, a figure of the Portuguese Renaissance, constructed the main building of the palace on land leased to monks from the Order of St. Jerome. In 1726, the property was acquired by King João V to serve as his holiday residence and remained in the royal family's possession until 1908. From then on, guardianship was entrusted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which used Belém Palace to host visiting foreign officials until the foundation of the Republic in 1910. ABSTRACT The Nationalist Republican Party represented the conservative republican alternative to the Portuguese Republican Party which represented the radical and historic line of the Portuguese republicanism. The Nationalist Republican Party defended order, moderation and reconciliation with the traditionalist Por- tuguese society, trying to create a “Republic for all Portuguese”. The Nationalist Republican Party supported a secular state, but not a secular society. This party aimed the balance between traditionalism, moderate nationalism and republica- nism. Key-words Portugal – Portuguese First Republic – Nationalist Republican Party – ideo- logy – conservative – party of notables.
