In the World and for the World

A few Sundays ago the Gospel reading was the passage in John’s gospel where Jesus prays on his last evening with the disciples before his crucifixion; and what Jesus says in this prayer is still as relevant to us today as it was to the disciples then.

Jesus begins by reminding the disciples that the world is a difficult place; which we know is just as true today as it was then: and because this is true for so many people today, it’s important that the church is a place where we never pretend otherwise; where we tell the truth, that life is both, beautiful and difficult; wonderful and painful.

Adverts often try and sell us the dream that if we just buy the right product, or wear the right clothes, or drive the right car; life will be marvellous; but Jesus didn’t hide the pain of his death from his disciples or us, he tells the truth: this world can be a hard place to live in. Jesus also reminds us that faith doesn’t provide an escape from life, but it can help and support us through life’s problems.

During his prayer, Jesus asks God not to take his followers out of the world, but to protect them in the world from the designs of evil. Sometimes I think, it might be easier, if Jesus would take us out of this world ... protect us from all problems! But instead Jesus asks God to support us through whatever happens. Jesus promises that whatever problems and struggles we face, we will never be alone, he will always be with us; and that’s a message which the world really needs to hear right now: that our God is a God who helps us to face life’s difficult times. 4

Finally in the Gospel passage; we read about the purpose Jesus gives for our lives; that purpose is to care for this world that God loves. The world often seems such a sad place BUT unbelievable as it seems, this struggling world is very much loved by God; and Jesus wants us to tell people about God’s love and care, and to celebrate when we see love and care and good works in action.

In all the horrible things which are happening in our country and in the world at the moment, there are also actions of selfless love and instances of people giving to those in need in many different ways which it’s humbling to hear about and which point to the Holy Spirit living presence.

By our words, and more importantly by our actions, we too can bring God’s love to everyone we meet and show that God has not deserted this world but is very much a loving part of it through the Spirit.

I wonder how God might use us in the month ahead to show God’s love to the world? Perhaps we could ask God to give us the opportunities, and the courage, to reach out to others in love and to show them that we have a God who never deserts us but walks with us on our journey through life.

With love and blessings Rev Liz

Local History Corner

Creswell District Nurse's Retirement 1935 At the end of October 1935, a presentation was made in the Drill Hall, Creswell, to Miss Langbridge on her retirement as district nurse in the parish for the last 15 years. She was presented with an inscribed gold wristlet watch and an evening bag containing £30 10s. Mrs. Henton, wife of the colliery manager, presided and said that over 800 persons had subscribed to the presentation and this showed that she occupied a very warm place in the hearts of the people of Creswell. She commented that the life of a district nurse was not easy and was one of service throughout and needed courage and patience. Amid laughter she said that Nurse Langbridge had pushed along on her old bike in all weathers and smiled through it all. People would be pleased to hear that she was not leaving them but staying on in Creswell. Mrs.Turner of Elmton made the presentation saying, "May the watch never stop ticking and the bag never be empty". Mr.Luther Henton JP added his tribute and said it was only fair to say it was the Duke and Duchess of Portland who had conceived the idea of a district nurse 40 years ago and that they gave £90 per year to the nursing fund. The Bolsover Colliery Company gave £50 per year. He felt sure that the people of Creswell appreciated the help of their Graces very much indeed and that also of the Colliery Company. The responsibility for administering this fund fell to the Vicar, The Rev. C.Smith and his wife. in response to the latter's speech , he reminded Mr. Henton that he had forgotten to mention that about four years ago the workmen at the colliery had subscribed £40 and since

11 then had collected £25 or more each year for the nursing fund. The Church Glee Party entertained the guests and the National Anthem brought the evening to a close.

Elmton Festival The weekend of 23rd, 24th and 25th saw the Elmton Well Dressing and Open Gardens. A thoroughly enjoyable two days, which began with the blessing of the wells on Friday evening.

Saturday and Sunday saw over 300 visitors to the gardens and to the School Rooms for Cream Tea.

It was a real community effort a privilege to be involved.

The theme for the well dressing was ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’. His was Janet Barbers favourite hymn and we remembered Janet at the blessing of the wells.

Ingredients

100g Fairtrade raisins. 100ml boiling hot strong Fairtrade coffee. 250g unsalted butter. 300g Fairtrade soft dark brown sugar. 250g Fairtrade 70% dark chocolate, chopped into small pieces. 6 Large free range egg yokes. 6 large free range egg whites. 1 tsp sea salt. Bitter Chocolate powder for dusting.

Method Line a 20cm springform cake tin and set aside. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas 4. Pour the boiling hot coffee over the raisins. Set aside for 20 minutes to become plump. Melt the butter and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Once melted remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate. Whisk to melt. Stir in the soaked raisins and coffee. Set aside to cool whilst whisking the egg whites. Whip the egg whites till aerated and forming soft peaks, then add the sea salt. Whisk the egg yolks into the cooled chocolate mix and fold the egg whites into the chocolate mix. 16

Transfer the mix to the prepared cake tin and bake for 25 minutes. The cake will soufflé. However once cooled it will sink and become fudgy. Leave to cool till completely cold. Overnight is best.
