AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Presents Custer’s Last Stand New Two-Hour Documentary Explores the Life of One of the Most Controversial and Mythic Figures in American History Premieres Tuesday, January 17, 2012 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. ET on PBS America had just finished celebrating its 100th birthday, when, on July 6, 1876, the telegraph brought word that General George Armstrong Custer and 261 members of his Seventh Cavalry column had been massacred by Cheyenne and Lakota warriors along the Little Bighorn River in Montana Territory. The news was greeted with stunned disbelief. How could Custer, the “boy general” of the Civil War, America’s most celebrated Indian fighter, the avatar of western expansion, have been struck down by a group of warriors armed with little more than bows and arrows? Like everything else about Custer, his martyrdom was shrouded in controversy and contradictions, and the final act of his larger-than-life career was played out on a grand stage with a spellbound public engrossed in the drama. In the end, his death would launch one of the greatest myths in American history. Custer’s Last Stand, a new two-hour biography of one of the most celebrated and controversial icons of nineteenth-century America, paints a penetrating psychological portrait of Custer’s charismatic, narcissistic personality, and for the first time on television, explores the fateful relationships within the officers of the Seventh Cavalry that would lead him to his doom. This new biography allows viewers to take a fresh look at Custer’s passionate love affair with his wife Libbie, and their mutually ambitious partnership that made them the power couple of the 1870s. -

Volume I is concerned with heritage rates and the methods used to estimate the rates; Volume II describes the methods and results of a current fish consumption survey; Volume III is a technical appendix to Volume II. A foreword to Volumes I-III has been authored by the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes and EPA. The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes have also authored a second foreword to Volumes I-III and the ‘Background’ section of Volume I. -

Faulconer Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 84602, USA; [email protected] Abstract: Latter-day Saint (“Mormon”) liturgy opens its participants to a world undefined by a stark border between the transcendent and immanent, with an emphasis on embodiment and relationality. The formal rites of the temple, and in particular that part of the rite called “the endowment”, act as a frame that erases the immanent–transcendent border. Within that frame, the more informal liturgy of the weekly administration of the blood and body of Christ, known as “the sacrament”, transforms otherwise mundane acts of living into acts of worship that sanctify life as a whole. I take a phenomenological approach, hoping that doing so will deepen interpretations that a more textually based approach might miss. Drawing on the works of Robert Orsi, Edward S. Casey, Paul Moyaert, and Nicola King, I argue that the Latter-day Saint sacrament is not merely a ritualized sign of Christ’s sacrifice. Instead, through the sacrament, Christ perdures with its participants in an act of communal memorialization by which church members incarnate the coming of the divine community of love and fellow suffering. Participants inhabit a hermeneutically transformed world as covenant children born again into the family of God. The Sheep Eater Shoshone – The Tukudeka Objective: Students will write a historical fiction account, using historical facts to make it realistic, of a week spent as a Sheep Eater Shoshone. Connections: Social Studies Writing Informational Text Note Taking Background: See “History of the Sheep Eaters”, which also can serve an informational text for students to read. Procedures: 1. Show a photo of a Sheep Eater Shoshone (Tukudeka) and ask students how they think “Sheep Eaters” earned their name. Explain that they will be learning more about one of the last groups of people to live away from modernization and then they will “become” one of these people and tell a story about a short segment of their year. It is suggested students write about one particular event that takes place over a day or week. 2. Either read the “History of the Sheep Eaters” to class or have students read it on their own. You may suggest students take notes or highlight information to help them write their story later. 3. You may wish to show them the entire segment of the movie “Sheep Eaters: Keepers of the Past” found on the USB drive or on YouTube. This is a 27- minute film accounting historical background of the people. Perhaps even starting the film at 2:59 would bypass some slow parts. The film uses excerpts from G.A. Native American Plaster Sculpture Conservation
Chief Manuelito Sculpture CITY HALL, GALLUP, NM SERVICES PERFORMED Chief Manuelito served as an important Navajo leader in the mid-19th century against the Conservation Treatments encroachment of the U. S. Government. Kit Carson’s scorched earth campaign left many native people Investigation, Testing & Analysis starving though until they were forced to turn themselves in. Throughout this period, Manuelito led Maintenance Programs attacks and remained among the last to surrender. He remained a popular leader, advocating for Plaster Conservation perseverance in the native culture and advancement through education. He is represented here by the Plaster Fabrication artist Hermon Atkins MacNeil, who created several other notable sculptures of Native American subjects and themes. Research & Documentation Surveys & Condition Assessments The Chief Manuelito sculpture was created using wood, plaster, and paint. Past cleaning eorts had caused signicant damage. Cracks in the gypsum and plaster layers were associated with the movement of the wooden armature. The sculpture had areas of loss, and areas of visible previous repairs. We were contracted to perform the sculptures’s plaster and paint conservation treatment. After the condition assessment, paint samples were collected and investigated to develop the earliest color compositions, likely paint scheme, and pattern of the blanket. Treatment of the sculpture itself proceeded in three parts: structural stabilization and integration of new base and support components, consolidation and repair of deteriorated decorative plasterwork, and paint removal along with repainting where needed. We also provided guidance for the display of the sculpture, and a maintenance plan for its continued preservation. RAMAH, NEW MEXICO, 1876-1900 AN HISTORICAL EPISODE WITH SOME VALUE ANALYSIS' BY IRVING TELLING* W'HE„ N BRIGHAM YOUNG planted colonies throughout the semi- arid intermountain region, the conditions under which settlers were called to live equalled in hardship those met anywhere on the American frontier. Yet the number of communities which failed was amazingly small. The Latter-day Saints remained at their posts through the most trying times.2 Why should these people leave their old homes to build anew, suffering again the trials of pioneering in an unfriendly country? Ramah was such a Mormon colony. In west central New Mexico, surrounded by a few hundred Navaho Indians, and twenty miles east of the Indian pueblo of Zuni, the settlement was founded as a mission to the Indians. A contemporary of the first Mormon settlements on the Little Colorado River (Sunset, Obed, Brigham City, and Joseph City), Ramah has been the only one of these initial ventures besides Joseph City to survive the struggle against a hostile environment.3 A mountain ridge *Mr. Telling recently received his doctor's degree from Harvard Uni versity, and is now serving as history instructor at the University of Massa chusetts.
