Wharton Congratulates Senator Janis Johnson on Career Achievements Senator Has Had Many Outstanding Accomplishments for Manitobans, Canadians: Wharton NEWS RELEASE September 27, 2016 For Immediate Release Wharton congratulates Senator Janis Johnson on career achievements Senator has had many outstanding accomplishments for Manitobans, Canadians: Wharton Jeff Wharton, MLA for the Gimli constituency, congratulates the Honourable Janis Johnson of Manitoba on her retirement today from the Senate of Canada. Johnson, a Gimli resident, is retiring after a 26-year career in the Upper Chamber that began with her appointment by then-prime minister Brian Mulroney in 1990 as a representative for Manitoba. “Senator Johnson has served the people of the Interlake and Manitoba remarkably well during her many years in the Upper Chamber,” said Wharton. “Her lengthy list of achievements for this province and for all of Canada is outstanding. I thank her for her service and for her accomplishments in the Senate, and wish her the very best as she enters private life.” Before stepping away from the Senate as its longest-serving Conservative member, Johnson chaired or served on more than a dozen committees in the Upper Chamber. She has had a strong voice in environmental projects and causes including the creation of the Lake Winnipeg Basin Initiative.     The 18th Gimli Film Festival runs July 25 - 29, 2018 OPENING DAY OF THE 18TH ANNUAL GIMLI FILM FESTIVAL Gimli – July 26, 2018- After a fantastic and well attended first day the 18th Gimli Film Festival is excited to commence its second day of showcasing world-class cinema. As always many of our advance tickets have already sold out but rush seating is set aside for walk ups at each screening. Over 180 people attended last night’s opening reception which included sponsors, GFF Board members, staff and volunteers. At the reception, the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba The Honourable Janice C. Filmon gave a few words on what the Gimli Film Festival brings to Manitoban Cinema. Chair of the Gimli Film Festival The Honourable Janis Johnson also spoke of the growth of Gimli Film Festival over the last eighteen years and recognized Festival Director Leona Johnson for her four years with the Festival. Opening film Shirkers was well attended with local filmmaker Guy Maddin introducing the film. Following that 690 Vopnafjörður was at full capacity with Icelandic filmmaker Karna Sigurðardóttir in attendance. Last night’s RBC Sunset Screening was a home run hit with an attendance of 109 people despite the rainy weather. Day two opens with a 10 a.m. screening of Bachman, the documentary of rock royalty Randy Bachman who achieved success many decades ago, and now in his 70s is still performing, hosting radio shows, and mentoring young musicians. This film has sold out of pre-reserved tickets, but walk-ups are still available on a first-come first-served basis.
