NEWS RELEASE September 27, 2016 For Immediate Release Wharton congratulates Senator Janis Johnson on career achievements Senator has had many outstanding accomplishments for Manitobans, Canadians: Wharton Jeff Wharton, MLA for the Gimli constituency, congratulates the Honourable Janis Johnson of Manitoba on her retirement today from the Senate of Canada. Johnson, a Gimli resident, is retiring after a 26-year career in the Upper Chamber that began with her appointment by then-prime minister Brian Mulroney in 1990 as a representative for Manitoba. “Senator Johnson has served the people of the Interlake and Manitoba remarkably well during her many years in the Upper Chamber,” said Wharton. “Her lengthy list of achievements for this province and for all of Canada is outstanding. I thank her for her service and for her accomplishments in the Senate, and wish her the very best as she enters private life.” Before stepping away from the Senate as its longest-serving Conservative member, Johnson chaired or served on more than a dozen committees in the Upper Chamber. She has had a strong voice in environmental projects and causes including the creation of the Lake Winnipeg Basin Initiative.
