1938 was an important year for the Club.

It was the year that the Club first made the unanimous decision to accept women for Associate membership although no voting powers were given till the 1980s. Once quoted by the press to be “Singapore’s most famous male sanctum”, SCC might have possibly been the first club in Singapore to take the step forward.

Female Members made their mark at the opening function in 1938 with a novelty cricket match between their own eleven and a male Club eleven. Within a year, 22 associate female Members were elected to the Club.

1938 was also the year that the Clubhouse had a major facelift for its premises, to provide Members a more comfortable and prestigious setting.

The Men’s Bar, which was previously located at the current Oval Restaurant, was known for its strict rule of permitting only male Members.

This was a popular place for male Members to recline after a good game or socialize over a few pints of beers.

In the event that a wife or girlfriend entered the Men’s Bar in search of their partner, by the rule of thumb, the male Member would have to buy a drink for everyone in the bar, all done in good nature, of course.

Fast forward to today, after its relocation to the basement where it is still named the Men’s Bar for the sake of legacy, the Club lifted that rule and it is now a welcome venue for all Members.

12 THE PADANG MAR / APR 2019 CLUB NEWS Reciprocal Club Review: The Oriental Club, London, UK. The Happy Traveller

In my 20 years in the Singapore Cricket Club, I have always been happy and satisfied with the facilities provided by the Club, but there is one thing I never got around to make use of and that was the reciprocal rights provided throughout many clubs in the world, which the SCC staff and management are in constant pursuit of upgrading to provide us, the members, with a friendly and “home away from home” feel.

This changed back in August of 2018, when I went to London for a couple of visits split over two weeks. London of course being the metropole it is, is famous for many great things as well as for its sky-high hotel prices. A friendly advice from a friend and colleague as well as a glance through our website revealed that in the heart of London, and only a 5-minute walk from my office, The Oriental Club is located, where they provide comfortable rooms which can be used by visiting reciprocal club members.

The process of booking my room was simpler than simple. A quick email to their booking / reservations desk at The Oriental Club was responded to immediately, outlining the availability and price which I must point out was very favourable, Bar Captain Mr. Dalibor and his colleague Ms. Elena considering its location just opposite Bond Street Station (Oxford Street). All they needed was my credit card details along with a LOI (Letter of Introduction) from SCC to secure the booking.

I was quite excited to check in, and upon my arrival a late Sunday night in August, I was greeted at the front desk by a very polite and accommodating staff member of the club. The club and its facilities are right up the alley of the SCC, so already there the home-away-from-home feel started to make its impact. Much to my delight, I found the room to be of good standard, with its en-suite bathroom and all the amenities of a normal hotel room.

Throughout my stay, I had the pleasure of enjoying scrumptious breakfasts in the club’s restaurant, enjoying the warm August evenings in the beautiful courtyard, while hosting colleagues / clients in the Bar, where Mr. Dali, the friendly bar captain was in full control. Fine selections of wine and drinks were on offer, and again at very favourable prices, while the level of service was top-notch. And if that was not enough, the bar counter served Curry with Basmati rice that hit the spot so well, that I actually thought I could have been sitting at the SCC terrace.

All in all, it was a marvellous experience that I would suggest SCC Members to go and experience for themselves going forward. It was so enjoyable that I have booked myself in once again for my next upcoming trip to London.

Yours Truly Oliver E. Andersen – A new fan of the reciprocal club system on offer.

MAR / APR 2019 THE PADANG 19 FEATURE WOMEN OF SCC! In celebration of the International Women’s Day in March, The Padang spoke to six female SCC Members who are powerhouses in their own right.

Zaibun Siraj Co-Founder and Past President of the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE)

You have spent much of your life actively involved in civic society, even at a time when it was considered highly unconventional for women to speak up. What aspect of your work particularly resonates with you? Since the 1980s I have worked to influence the Media to portray women in a positive manner. The Media, in particular advertising is very powerful. It shapes people’s attitudes and beliefs and these in turn influence our behavior. Hence, it is important to create an awareness of sexism in the Media and to get men, women and children to reject sexist images. Sexist images and sexist language suggest derogatory, stereotypical ideas about women’s abilities, potential or characters. The implication of the message is that women are weak, inferior, subservient, dependent or subordinate in relation to men.

It has been most satisfying over the years to see some change do, we cannot protect ourselves. In today’s world, we must develop in the way women are now portrayed in the Media. I conducted intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and the higher order thinking research into the topic, organized campaigns like Spot the Sexist Ad skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. We must develop the Campaign, wrote letters of protest on sexist images that appeared ability to think differently and the courage to propose a different point in the Media, presented talks and wrote papers. Not only did I enjoy of view. We must stand up for ourselves. all of this work but I found it stimulating, challenging and satisfying. Sara Cheng Chief Executive Officer Fuji Xerox Singapore

How do you build a career for yourself in male-dominated industries? My first job was a Financial Analyst for Procter & Gamble who is the leader in the Consumer Product industry and I got into the Hi-tech industry purely by chance.

But regardless of which industry you are in, career opportunities are formed by a combination of opportunity, capability and your performance reputation. When I looked back, I see several turning In celebration of the International Women’s Day in March, points which led to where I am today:

The Padang spoke to six female SCC Members 1. Ask for the job you want – when I first moved from Consumer who are powerhouses in their own right. Products to Hi-tech industry, I was in Finance. I asked to be considered for sales and then I asked to be in business consulting. Both times, I was given the opportunities. They would not have happened had I not asked for them.

2. Know your passion – early in my career I was presented with a big promotion to become a project manager. I declined because I preferred to learn and solve customers’ business issues. Soon after, the business consulting job became available.

3. Find and learn from mentors/coaches – these are the senior managers in the company whom you respect. Ask 1 or 2 to be your informal mentors/coaches who can help you navigate the organization and show you leadership qualities.

4. Build a network both inside and outside of your company – I wish I had started on this much earlier! Networking does not have to be pretentious. I am surprised by the number of genuinely interesting people I have met since I made a real effort on this. The more senior you go, the more your network will carry you.

Speaking of being in male dominated environments, I love being different and taking full advantage of it. People listen to and remember me more and I am always mindful in building my personal brand and creating the most impact whenever I can.

Why should organizations invest in and nurture women talent? Women account for 50% of the world population. “How to improve gender equality in the workplace?” reached Google’s top 5% Can Women “Have it ALL”? searchers around gender equality last year. My question is, why shouldn’t any organization invest in and nurture female talent? “Have it all” started almost 20 years ago meaning for women to accomplish in both family and professional lives. In most advanced Gender equality globally is a complex issue reflecting difference countries like Singapore, women are presented with many choices. in values and opportunities for women in different societies. At Fuji Xerox a part time rather than a full time job, etc. Singapore, female employees account for 37% of our total work force and 50% of the managers. So make your choice with your eyes open and live it with your heart open. The more visible challenge in the workforce in Singapore to me is the lack of women in the top leadership positions and board rooms. We need policy makers and corporate leaders to take actions to remove If you could have dinner with any woman, living or dead, the glass ceiling. Is it important that all girls have access to/ participate in and viral marketing where you are glorified or vilified at the drop of sports, and why? a hat. That is where sports and meditation have helped me maintain that perspective as I have developed more empathy both with myself To be very honest, I believe that the era of restricting opportunities on and with my team-mates/trainees. the basis of gender is long gone. Girls have proven themselves to be as good if not better than me in Name one female who has impacted your life and how. all respects so why should sports be any different? Without a doubt, my mum. I was lucky to have an open-minded family background and as such, Singapore is a meritocratic society which allowed me to pursue my She is a single parent and through her own life and the adversities dreams uninhibitedly and I believe that this right should be made that she had endured, she has taught me that anything is possible. available to every individual (boy or girl.) She brought me up on her own and constantly reminded me that I could do anything I set my mind to. Sports is great for character building, developing mental and physical fitness, handling pressure, developing solutions on the go aswell With adequate and much needed doses of discipline and valued as learning how to work with others (if in a team environment) and education, she never made me feel that I was in any way lesser than doing all this in a fun yet challenging environment is something that my peers and that confidence has held me in good stead throughout everyone (boy or girl) should experience. my life. I wouldn’t be half the person that I am without her constant love, Are there any differences in the way male and female support and guidance and that has inspired me to try to do my part athletics are treated that you would like to see changed? for others, especially young girls all around the world. Yes, there are differences. There is a concept that women are not as good as men at sports and that is reflected in the way we are marketed, the pay structure and the opportunities afforded to us among others. Moreover during training, they sometimes go easy on girls when playing together in a same sport because they think we can’t step up or maybe even be afraid to get too rough in case we get hurt. Physically we are built differently and that’s probably the only difference actually but that can be worked on. Physical strength can be challenging but skills and mental strength are things we can work on and we can be just as good or even better then male athletes. I’ve been very lucky to be playing for SCC where I’ve never once been treated differently. If anything the boys at SCC challenge me more and give me opportunities to step up.

You won the Sports Woman of the Year award at the SCC Sports Awards 2018; how has your journey with SCC helped you in your sporting and personal development? It’s an amazing feeling. Being given an opportunity to play with the men is something not many female cricketers would have had. SCC not only gave me the opportunity but they recognised my efforts and awarded me with the SCC Sports Award. It gave me more confidence and encouraged me to push myself and focus on playing at a higher division for the Club

What is one thing sports has taught you that has helped you in your career? One thing that I have learned through playing and coaching is that sports is a great leveler. You could deliver a match-winning performance one day and be the cause of your team’s defeat on another but the key is to retain a balanced perspective wherein we are neutral in the face of both success and adversity. This is easier said than done especially in the age of social media

What are some strategies that can help women achieve a more prominent role in their organizations? Be yourself and stop apologising. Have you noticed how many times women say sorry when they don’t need to apologize? I don’t know why but it’s something women do all the time and they don’t need to – be confident in your decisions, even if they require compromise and negotiation. And accept that you are enough, stop thinking everyone is better than you and know that what you bring to home and work is valued and appreciated.

What advice would you give to younger women starting out in their careers? Most women look to find a mentor to help them and this can help. However what many women overlook is the importance having good sponsors to advance their careers. A sponsor, unlike a mentor, will provide positive feedback on work you have done in the organization and are, in many instances, instrumental in helping you move to your next role.

If you could have dinner with any woman, living or dead, Is it at all possible to balance a career and marriage, real or fictional, past or present, who would it be and while also making time for yourself? why? Absolutely! For me it comes down to making choices about when I would have dinner with my mother, because I still can. Often we and where to spend your time. It’s not always easy and sometimes overlook how precious our parents are and don’t realise this until the choices are very hard, especially when it comes to sacrificing they are no longer with us. Living in Singapore, I don’t get to see my short term family time for longer term gain. My advice though is to be mother as often as I would like so she would be my first choice for clear within yourself what you want and then discuss it openly with all dinner companion every time. those involved so everyone can see the full picture.

Nicci Meek Strategic Partner Manager

Are there any assumptions about women that you would like to see changed? I would change the fact that there are assumptions in general. Every woman is an individual and has different strengths, different things they enjoy, different reactions to situations and different goals for their own lives, so generalizing women as a whole isn’t super beneficial.

As a woman, how do you measure success? I’m pretty big on goal setting, both small (daily & weekly) and large (quarterly & yearly) and for work as well as personal. As I hit each of the goals, that equals success to me and that’s how I measure. I’m pretty guilty of moving onto the next thing before I’ve absorbed that the goal has been achieved so maybe that is something to work on for 2019!

What’s one key leadership lesson you’ve learned along the way? That to be trusted and valued is the most empowering feeling you can give someone. I’ve been lucky enough to work for a lot of great leaders, who inspired me to work really hard for them because of how they treated me, in fact I still work for one of those people right now!

Name one female who has impacted your life and how: My first female boss was a lady named Judy Rush, I worked with her in Kansas City when I was 22 or 23. She opened me up to a lot of new experiences and introduced me to the concept of vision boards which I have done every year since. These have changed my life. To me she really reflected the type of person I wanted to be one day, very skilled at what she did but extremely humble, compassionate and open.

MAR / APR 2019 THE PADANG 23 FEATURE

Tracy Jones Project Manager, HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens Sport SG

Why is it important for women to pursue their own interests and maintain their individuality even after marriage? We’re in 2019 and the ability for women to pursue their own interests should not be in question.

Since you first joined SCC, what changes have you observed in female representation in the Club? I do believe that female members speak up more than previously and have seen more representation on some of the Sub-Committees. However, the one gap that still remains is at General Committee level – since I joined the Club in 1998, you can count the number of women that have served on the GC with one hand. One of the challenges is that spouse members are not permitted to serve on the GC which rules out quite a number of women. There seems to be more younger female members who have joined SCC to play sports like Hockey, Netball, Tennis and Squash. They 4-Course Dinner (inclusive of free flow of wine) should actively be encouraged to play a bigger role in the Club, beyond just sports. • Keynote Dinner with AWARE Co-Founder Zaibun Siraj How can female members take on an even more active • role in the Club? Special Activities Firstly, women have to be confident in themselves that they have as much if not more to contribute than men. I also know that Members of the GC have tried to get more women involved, but I think women will be more likely to volunteer if they knew there would be others getting involved at the same time. One suggestion I have is for the GC to get a small group of women together for a focus group discussion to seek their advice and opinions on how to get more women involved and perhaps even identify individuals who might be interested. It is important to then act on the suggestions that are given.

What in your life has brought or given you the greatest satisfaction or fulfillment? On a personal level, I guess still being happily married after 22 years is an achievement! On a professional level, my earlier career took a bit of a back seat because my husband’s job required us to relocate several times. However, over the last 4 years I have been involved in running the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens – being part of a team that operates a tournament which is respected globally, has given me a lot of satisfaction.

About International Women’s Day International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

It is celebrated annually on 8 March, and has been occurring for more than a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911.

The International Women’s Day campaign theme for 2019 is #BalanceforBetter, calling for the building of a gender-balanced world.

From grassroots activism to worldwide action, we are entering an exciting period of history where the world expects balance. We notice its absence and celebrate its presence. Balance is not a women’s issue, it’s a business issue. The race is on for the gender- balanced boardroom, a gender-balanced government, gender-balanced media coverage, a gender-balance of employees, more gender-balance in wealth, gender-balanced sports coverage, etc.

Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive. Balance drives a better working world. Let’s all help create a #BalanceforBetter.

SCC Sports Camp!

We had an amazing year in 2018 - cver 180 children from 134 families attended camps throughout the different school holidays; the October half- term camp saw a record breaking 39 campers attend, which was brilliant fun. So thank you very much for your support!

Sports Camps SG, in partnership with the SCC, has worked very hard to develop and deliver exciting multisports camps for children aged between 6-12 years old. The children not only get to experience quality guidance from specialist coaches, they have the benefit of enjoying the amazing facilities at the SCC.

Coach Ricky explained, “We aim to make the school holidays special and enable children to be active, have fun and learn together.”

“Our programme is designed to build confidence, friendships and skills. So regardless of whether your child is sporty or less outgoing, our activities get the best out of every child and give you peace of mind knowing your child is safe, free from screens and having fun.”

So if you are wondering what to plan for your children in the school holidays in 2019, this could be a perfect way to keep the kids off pesky computers, iPads, and YouTube! and be super active instead. Children will try up to 8 different sports including Rugby, Soccer, Cricket, Netball, Tennis, and Squash. Every holidays, we will also introduce new sports to keep the children interested and engaged.

Sports Camp runs weekdays from 9am to 3pm. The 5-day program is best but we are flexible. A healthy lunch is provided every day, as well as camp shirts and achievement certificates for those who complete a full week.

We have a schedule of Camps planned to meet the demands of both the local and international schools; all we need is a minimum of 12 children booked in to confirm a camp. Sports Camps SG is open to all children so please do tell friends, family and work colleagues. SCC members are entitled to 10% discount on the camp fees for the first child. Sibling discounts are also available.

LEARN MORE BY VISITING WWW.SPORTSCAMPS.SG OR FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK. TO BOOK A PLACE ON THE NEXT CAMP, YOU CAN EMAIL [email protected]

Here is what one parent from the Summer Camps had to say about our program:

“School holidays every year require a great level of engagement and planning for all the parents to manage I’m sure, the key focus being how to keep the child en- gaged over the long breaks.

This year (2018) the Summer Camp at SCC was a welcome change for Sanaya; although I must admit that the enrolment was done with a hint of scepticism as to how this will turn out for Sanaya. However, the experience even after the first day itself made us believe that this was one of the best options for our child.

Although Sanaya has always been an active child , we had not seen her getting enthusiastic about any sport . This experience was pivotal and the exposure that she received in various disciplines was amazing. The method of coaching was clearly geared towards building a certain level of interest for the children and it is very ev- ident. And this was not restricted to any one sport . The same was observed across Tennis, Squash, Netball, Football, Cricket etc.

And that is not where is stopped. We were were happy with the level of attention and detail that was provided to ensure child safety and dietary requirements as well.

We as parents and Sanaya looked forward to being part of the camp every week. I would highly recommend this option to all who want their kids to have an active holiday in the form of sports education.

Child - Sanaya, Parent Sharmistha (Mum) Sanaya has attended 2 camps: the first was in 25-29 June and she enjoyed it so much, she came back on 16th-20 July 2018.

Balut Convenor: Tony Fisher | Article by: Tony Fisher

SCC’s “Happy Baluteers” are joined by SCC GM Sean Boyle, BEM, and new members Chris Sykes and Sue Cullen during the first In-house event of 2019 which was held on Tuesday, January 8th. THE BALUT SECTION BEGINS THE NEW YEAR IN A PARTY SPIRIT

The Balut Section kicked off on January 8th with its first In-house event of the year.

The Convenor first called for a minute’s silence in memory of the sad passing of longtime Balut Section member and benefactor Mogens Anderson.

Topping the leader board at this stage is Captain Raj Kumar who After several fruitless years of trying, Tony at last succeeded in ‘winning’ the coveted amassed 705 points. He is also reigning “Baluteer of the Year” Chivas ‘mini’ by accumulating the lowest total score of the night! since 2017! In second place was Rene Balagopal with 646 points followed by John Taylor who accumulated 590 points.

The award for the highest points total of the evening went to Penny Bligh with 153 points.

Tipping the scale at the other end was Convenor Tony who scratched together a miniscule 477 points and was justly rewarded with a bottle of the coveted Chivas ‘mini’ – which he needed no encouragement to “down in one” in the customary fashion.

AND THE SCC 2018 BALUTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD GOES TO…… …Captain Raj Kumar. He is the Balut Section’s ‘dice meister’ supreme. He conjures up more mystifying magical moves than David Copperfield. For the second year in a row, Raj received the ‘Baluteer of the Year’ trophy plus a bottle of Chivas Regal whisky from SCC GM Sean Boyle, BEM.

Second and third place honours went to Vashi Sajnani and Mohan Dadlani respectively. Balut Captain Raj Kumar is presented with the ‘2018 Baluteer of the Year’ trophy and bottle of Chivas Regal by SCC GM Sean Boyle, BEM. On his right is GC Member Anwar Gaffoor.

The Committee Members for the new term are as follows: • Convenor: Ganesh Ramanathan • Captain: Melvin Tan • Treasurer: Derek Hodgkinson • Secretary: Candy Lai • Junior Sports Member Representative: Christian Huang • Committee Members: T. Velu and Josephine Lim Many thanks to the out-going committee for their hard work done in the last term.

GOOD BOWLING DAYS Contrary to popular local belief, the sport of bowls is not just for seniors. It is a tactical sport for all age groups, gender and status. In this issue, we feature a couple who have had an illustrious history in the sport of bowls, and they are still regular players of the sport.

Veteran bowlers Chai Hon Yoong now in his mid-80’s, and Yong Lew Foong now in her youthful 70’s, met at a mutual friend’s gathering in 1976 and that marked the beginning of their love story. They got married in 1978. During their dating days, they had vastly different sports interests. Lew Foong played tennis and squash, and Hon Yoong played a range of sports from hockey to billiards. Bowls brought them together in sports. It was not until 1995 when Lew Foong started to play bowls seriously and since then she has never looked back. “I loved the idea of challenging myself and I started practising on my own,” she said. She remembered fondly of her first international representation in the 1996 Women’s World Outdoor Bowls Championship held in . Subsequently, she went on Yong Lew Foong (left) and Chai Hon Yoong to partner with veteran bowler, Mary Lim, to win a silver and a bronze in the Ladies Pairs in the SEA Games and the Asia during his bowling years. His proud sporting achievements made Pacific Bowls Championships in 1999 respectively. him the first recipient of SCC’s Lifetime Achievement Award in the inaugural SCC Sports Award Night in 2008. One of the memorable trips for the couple was in 2004 where they were both selected to represent Singapore in the World Singles Lew Foong said that playing together, as husband and wife in a Champion of Champions held in Warilla, Australia. Hon Yoong team, requires “a lot of patience and understanding”. Using a word was also the first Singaporean bowler to be selected to play in the to describe each other, Hon Yoong calls Lew Foong “dependable” Commonwealth Games held in Canada in 1994. He had bagged while she describes him as “competitive” as he likes to take part several medals including a silver in the SEA Games Singles in everything.

Bridge Convenor: Patricia Jasudasen | Article by: Lord Firoz Khimji (Lord of Glencoe)

Hi all, hope you're having a great time bridging the gaps! Since most of our bridge events happen during the later three-quarter of the year, and considering quite a few enjoyed (pictorial) coverage in the last issue of this "rare" publication, there isn't a (comparatively) great deal to report in this issue. Hence I shall be devoting some of the space available to my all-new concoction, "Bridge Tit-bitz". Have fun reading, and indulging ... ! OPEN PAIRS TOURNEY (TANGLIN CLUB, 25 JANUARY 2019) Once again, our SCC Bridge Section Members displayed their "prowess" at this highly competitive tournament, whence the indomitable duo of King Fook and Mike Sharples clinched #3 ranking from a total entry of 28 pairs! They were followed closely by Jai Chapman and Rags Raghavan, in 6th spot, placing two of our SCC Bridge pairs in the top ten group! Kudos to them, and do keep up that SCC "fighting spirit"(hic)! • 3rd Overall Ranking: King Fook & Mike Sharples, the “indomitable duo” • 6th. BRIDGE BEGINNER’S COURSE (COMMENCING 9TH MARCH 2019, 9am - 11am, VICTORIA ROOM) Once again, our evergreen director, Carl Parker, will be conducting these courses over four (consecutive) Saturday mornings, kicking off on Saturday, 9th March, so I hope he'll enjoy a good turn out. Please do continue to "support" this event whenever you can, henceforth, whether you're only just beginning to get into this noble game, or looking towards honing your already acquired "skills" even further ... and watch this space ... !

To register, please contact Olivia Jacob via : [email protected]

GOING FORWARD... There’s still the rest of the year of competitive bridge to look forward to, not least amongst the line up, the Premier & National Bridge Leagues. This is subject to a final decision via an appropriate committee / Games Control Board meeting (which will have transpired by the time this issue is published and delivered). And by the time of going to press, our “CNY special event” will have happened too, the results of which will therefore have to inevitably await announcement in the next (May/June) issue.

Meantime ... howz about a weee bit of “bridge fun” ... ?!

BRIDGE TIT-BITZ *Question-Answer Q : How should I have played that hand? A : Under an assumed name!

Golf Convenor: Chionh Chye Hion | Article by: Victor Olsen

SCC vs CHANGI GOLF CLUB Changi Golf Club - 26th January 2019 This friendly competition started in 1990 and has since been a hallmark annual social event in our SCC Golf calendar.

The Gods were with SCC this year. We were blessed with an afternoon of beautiful balmy weather and fresh sea breeze. Late afternoon threatening rain clouds on the horizon changed direction when they caught sight of Colin’s bright orange framed sunglasses which transmitted sharp rain prevention warning signals.

On course, we witnessed a frisky love contest by mating budgerigars (aka love birds) at the 18th Hole Tee Box while 2 large sea eagles hovered high as dusk approached. We missed the wild boar family this year. Hope they did not end up in a curry or as satay.

Kudos to CGC and SCC Captain Alvin Khoo for the competition pairing. It was very well balanced and thanks to some CGC members who are also SCC Golfers, SCC produced a strong challenge this year. ANG POW GAME SICC Old Course - 13th February 2019 Perfect sunny weather drizzled with occasional short bursts of cool light rain and non-stop wind from almost every direction made this a spectacular afternoon for golf.

Monkeys frolicked with a swagger near the Ladies Tee Box, confident that SCC Golfers would not hit them and screamed mockingly in delight whenever a shot went OB. Then it happened, a certain SCC golfer who loves a good meal and his drink, did the near impossible. His drive off the White Tees hit a tree and flew backwards to land behind the Blue Tees - without hitting anyone in its path!! Now, that is real skill. His electrifying drive also sapped (or scared?) the life out the battery in his golf cart and it went dead flat!

Suffice it to say, the cheeky monkeys scurried to the trees and stayed there. 2 legs better than 4 legs.

Thanks to PT Hong’s excellent arrangement and sterling support and Richard Loo’s delicious menu selection, our golf ”jingang” enjoyed the pleasure of an unhurried afternoon of sweet golfing at SICC and a fantastic CNY Dinner at the Club’s famous SILK SCC vs Changi Golf Club: SCC's top pair, Roland Pereira and Michael Daryanani / More Restaurant. than70 golfers kept the tradition alive / 19th Hole camaraderie.

Netball Convenor: Nanthini Visvalingam | Article by: Nanthini Visvalingam

It’s that time of the year again when everyone springs into action after a long (fat-building) festive off-season. We have had an influx of new players which speaks volumes to the efforts of the section both on the court and socially. We expect some shuffles in our teams, serious hard work, possibly some complaining as we realise how much Christmas pudding and Prosecco ruin fitness levels, plenty of social activities and another rollercoaster year – bring on 2019! SCC League Two teams have been entered into the SCC ladies league, which we run as a pre-season league each year. The league has grown to 24 teams across 4 divisions this year. Turnout for trials saw a good mix of returning and new faces. More names for Eric to remember! The Hawks are entered in division 1 and Eagles in division 2 with both teams facing more competition with the expansion of the league. Still figuring out different combinations, both teams lost their opening matches with the Hawks settling in quicker and only losing by the tiny margin of 4 goals while the Eagles are still working out their best combinations (don’t ask us about the score, we’d rather not talk about it). Despite the loss, we’ve seen many promising passages of play, given some of our newest members are only 13 years old and playing for the first time in an open women’s competition! Bucks International Invitational Netball Tournament Bucks are hosting an international invitational netball tournament for the second time this year. This is a great opportunity to see netballing talent from across Asia, something that we only get on tours, to pick up some new moves and a great opportunity for many of our girls to catch up with friends made over the years across the various international teams. Upcoming Tours – KL & Bangkok MK Tigers (KL) hosted their inaugural international invitational tournament last year in which our touring team, SCC Flamingos, won the plate. This year, we are hoping to equal or better last year’s standing! Every year, in early June, we send a team to participate in the annual Southerners South East Asian Netball Invitational in Bangkok. The event promises a different playing experience and a chance for the team to bond off-court, bearing in mind that what happens on tour in Bangkok... is usually a bit of a blur. This is a great opportunity for our ladies and younger girls to face new opponents, improve their abilities and gain a different playing experience.

Even though the new season has started, we are always open to new members! Drop us an email at [email protected] if you are keen and would like to find out more!

Tennis Convenor: Soenke Langhoff

A JSM and co-opted as the Tennis Section’s Ladies Captain, say hello to Rehmat Johal! When did you start playing tennis, and how did you get involved in the sport? I started playing Tennis at the age of 3, thanks to my dad's determination that I be a serious tennis player. According to him, I was the clumsiest child with almost zero hand-eye coordination and he didn't have much faith in me being an athlete at all!

What are some of the benefits you’ve gained from play- ing tennis? Growing up playing tennis with my dad as a coach was definitely mentally & physically tough - and I despised it as a kid. But in recent years I realized the incredibly value competitive tennis brought to my life - I was physically fit enough to pick up rugby and play a second sport for the country! But more importantly, growing up as a national athlete since the age of 14 definitely imbibed in me important values like resilience and a hunger to succeed. I see the importance of those sporting values in my personal and professional life as well.

How do you juggle your time between studies, family, your social life and tennis? I made alot of my friends from tennis and so tennis has also become part of my social life. Otherwise, perhaps I'm fortunate in that I never particularly found a conflict between the various priorities - 24 hours a day is alot! I think it all comes down to being conscious with time management and being present in whatever you're doing at a given point of time.

What would you say to a female member who is con- sidering joining the Tennis Section and learning to play tennis? Awesome! To me, the SCC Courts are the most beautiful tennis courts in Singapore. Young or old, I think we are all broadly fun- loving, love tennis, and enthusiastic about satay. Join us!!

If you could have a match with a tennis professional player, who would it be and why? How do u feel about being SCC's Ladies Captain at First let's assume an alternative hypothetical world where I'm as such a young age? good as the tennis professionals. Haha! Initially I was quite overwhelmed and I still don't think I'm I'm torn between Kerber and Osaka. Kerber because I feel my really carrying it out perfectly. style of play is similar to hers (I'm often inspired by her play) - in But the fact that I've grown up in the Club and played for SCC that we both win points through consistency, running for every ball, for about 12 years now definitely helps with my understanding of and turning defence into attack. Osaka because I'm not sure I've the team and winning strategies for the competitions. Nilma, our ever seen a player with such mental tenacity, focus, and intensity former captain for many years, also mentored me since young & to compete and win. It would be amazing to compete against groomed me for the role :-) someone so mentally tough. But I'm still learning & maturing, and having a wonderful team I don't think I'd ever want to play against Djokovic because he's just makes it very enjoyable! too good in every aspect.

Calling All Ladies!
