Not pictured: Delores Nash and May, Tonya Vanwey and Curry, Linda Detwiler and Thyme. Graduates visited KSDS for 3 days of obedience sessions, refreshing and/or learning new skill tasks. Our growing family also had lots of time for socialization of dogs and humans. Recertification Every 5 years graduate teams are asked to recertify their partnership. They must show that they are still using their dog’s skill tasks correctly and pass the ADI public access test. The team is then issued a new ID card to verify that they have passed all of their requirements to be a successful and safe working team. Most teams take their recertification test during Grad retreat but are invited to do this at any other time during the year. 2016 GRAD RETREAT Sixteen graduate teams with family and caregiv- ers attended the 2016 Graduate Retreat. Three teams were recertified and everyone brushed up on skills and obedience. Once again Kan- sas weather provided a variety of changes for us to work on. Ninety plus degrees, wind, and rain kept everyone on their toes. Everyone was excited to visit with old friends and meet new ones. The dogs all worked well around each other, strangers, food, and toys. Playtime at the six-plex was enjoyed by all in the evenings.

KSDS had a display at K-State Open House on April 16th at the Kansas State Veterinary department. KSDS had a litter born on January 22, 2008, at K-State. The puppies were named after Kansas State. Danny Ayres, a KSDS service graduate, has Willie, a golden retriever, from this litter. Danny enjoyed a tour of the veterinary department at K-State, thanks to Kristen Linder, a member of the KSU CVM class of 2018, and a KSDS volunteer.

Learning sessions explored a pup’s life from the very beginning all the way to a life of assistance and then retirement.

For a donation of $100 or more, a memorial inscription of up to fifteen words are inscribed on a brass plate and affixed to a plaque in the west training building at KSDS, and you will also be recognized in the next Pathway newsletter. The brass plates are placed on wooden jigsaw puzzle pieces. Each piece has paw prints and footprints to signify the value of friendship in life’s journey.

13 EYE CARE FOR ANIMALS

Here is an example of something found on an exam: KSDS, Inc. (retired) Service Dog team Shelly Shetley and Boo. Shelly noted that Boo was having concerns with her retrieving skills and possibly losing vision. Shelly had met Mandi Holsten at a KSDS, Inc. monthly function, and Mandi informed Shelly of the Eye Care for Animals cour- tesy screening exams for assistance dogs. Dr. Kaese met with the team and diagnosed Boo with progressive retinal degeneration on her screening exam. Dr. Kaese scheduled Boo to be monitored for future complications from the progression of the disease. Boo was eventually retired and a suc- cessor dog named Jewel was placed with Shelly. She graduated from Rose Hill High School in 2005 and also graduated from Butler County Community College with a Business degree. Kristi has always had a love for animals and the desire and passion to help people since she was a young girl. This led Kristi into the career path of dog training and wanting to specialize in service dog training. Kristi is extremely grateful for her 5 week long internship at KSDS. Beginning September 1st, Kristi will move into a full-time position with KSDS as the Canine Housing Unit (CHU) Coordinator. Welcome to the KSDS family!
