CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, DOMINGUEZ HILLS Eleventh Annual February 11-12, 2016 A Greeting from President Hagan Welcome to the Eleventh Annual Student Research Day at CSU Dominguez Hills. This day has become another special Toro tradition celebrating students from across the university as they reveal the depths of their scholarship and research in a vast array of disciplines. It is the culmination of hours upon hours of hard work as students present the findings and lessons from their research. From their initial inquiries to their final presentations, students learn a great deal about their subjects and a great deal about themselves. In particular, they learn the values of patience, persistence and the importance of having a plan and a process to reach the understanding and answers they’re seeking. Conducting outstanding research is an acquired and collaborative skill, so I want to thank all of the faculty mentors, staff, judges and fellow students who have guided and encouraged our researchers on their important journeys. Your input and feedback have allowed our student researchers to shine. I also encourage everyone – whether you’re a presenter or a supporter – to try to visit as many of the presentations as possible. As you do, what I think will impress you most is the amazing level of discovery, creativity and imagination taking place on our CSU Dominguez Hills campus. We are a diverse university with multi-talented, multi-faceted, highly engaged students who are eager to share their latest discoveries. And today’s amazing, high-impact student research showcase offers ample evidence of that! Sincerely, Willie J. Hagan, Ph.D. President Welcome Presenters, judges, faculty mentors, and guests: Thank you, and welcome to the Eleventh Annual Student Research Day at California State University, Dominguez Hills. We’re proud to say that Student Research Day continues to grow. This year we have 320 separate presentations and posters, representing the work of 455 students, making this the largest Student Research Day ever. Having read all of the abstracts submitted for last year’s Student Research Day as well as this year’s, we can also say that the quality of the presentations as increased as well as the quantity. The most credit for this goes, of course, to all of our student presenters, who put long hours of thought and effort into their presentations. Isaac Newton once famously said, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” With all due respect to Sir Isaac, we don’t think that’s really how the advance of human knowledge works. All of us, instead of standing on the shoulders of a giant or two, can see further because we stand on the top of a human pyramid, made up of millions who have gone before us. By being here and presenting today, all of these students join that vast endeavor. Some may end up seeing farther than any of us ever have before; but every single one of them, by bringing something new into the world, has helped extend the human horizon. We also give our profound thanks to our faculty judges and mentors, who receive nothing extra in their paychecks for putting in the many hours that make this day happen. They do this because they know that by encouraging their students to conduct original experiments, write original scholarship, and create original plays, videos, poems, and art, they are giving those students the best possible training for the future, and they are honoring themselves and the fields of knowledge that they have made their life’s work. Finally, we give special thanks to President Willie J. Hagan, Provost Ellen Junn, Dean Dorota Huizinga, Sandra Tsing Loh, Frier McCollister, Anna Liza Garcia, Erika Torres, Brenda Knepper, Laura Drake, Michelle Martinez, the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, University Events and Ceremonies, the Office of Development, University Communications and Public Affairs, Loker Student Union, and all of our student volunteers for their support of our students. We have been proud to work with all of you, because you realize the importance of student research and the importance of each individual student. All of these people help make this a day of celebration of our community and the knowledge we build together. Please enjoy, learn, ask questions, and make new friendships today. Sincerely, Randolph Cauthen, Ph.D. John Price, Ph.D. Professor of English Professor of Physics Conference Chair Conference Co-Chair We have made every effort to make the information in this program accurate and to include all participants.
