BRAND NEW, Jack Duckworth and Me: My Life on the Street and Other Adventures, Bill Tarmey, Actor Bill Tarmey first appeared as Jack Duckworth in Coronation Street in November 1979, when his formidable on-screen wife Vera dragged him to Brian and Gail Tilsley's wedding, only to have him sneak o for a pint at the first opportunity. Aer playing what is arguably the nation's best-loved soap character for 31 years, Bill leaves the series in December 2010. To coincide with this momentous event in soap history, Bill now tells the full story of what it has been like to play this loveable rogue for almost half his life. He reveals the hilarious on-set japes behind the scenes - such as getting fits of the giggles with Curly Watts and Alec Gilroy, what it was like playing the Romeo to Bet Lynch and Dulcie Froggat, plus the more emotional times such as when Bernard Youens, who played Stan Ogden, died. There is also the fascinating story of Bill's early years growing up in the streets of post-war Manchester, with bombsites for playgrounds and an ex-Navy grandpa who taught him how to box. Destined to become a master asphalter like his Dad, Bill never gave up his love of singing, and by the late 1960s he had made a name for himself in the unforgiving environment of the Working Men's Club circuit. Taking work as a TV extra, Bill soon found himself treading the famous cobbled streets, and was a natural in his newly created role of Jack, which has been uncanny in mirroring Bill's own life for its lurches of fortune. Packed with anecdotes to delight both Corrie fans and lovers of British TV everywhere, this warm-hearted and substantial autobiography is THE soap... • Ragchew November 2016
RAGCHEW NOVEMBER 2016 From the Editor The recent death of Jean Alexander who played the part of Hilda Ogden, the formidable wife of Stan Ogden played by Bernard Youens in the ITV soap opera “Coronation Street” reminded me of the time many years ago when the Gloucester Amateur Radio Society (as it then was) had it's own Stan and Hilda, in this case Stan Cook G3RNU and his wife Hilda. In those days we met in a room above the RAFA Club in Spa Road which for a time was also the venue for our occasional Skittles Social evenings. Now Stan was one of nature's gentlemen who wouldn't say “boo” to a goose and Hilda could be a bit domineering. At busy times Hilda could often be found serving behind the bar at the RAFA club and so it was on one occasion when we were having one of our Skittles bashes. The evening was in full flow and with a few drinks inside him, dear old Stan could be quite loquacious. And so it was that a group of us were around the bar with Stan in full flow when all of a sudden Hilda exploded “Yak, bloody yak that's all you do with this lot and when you're at home not a peep from you”. I can't recall who was more embarrassed – us or Stan!!!!! I think that was probably the evening too when we almost blotted our copy book with the RAFA Club because of our raucous singing and chanting which took the form of a lusty rendition of “Why Was He Born So Beautiful” to anyone who scored a duck with all three balls.

  • Carltonware.Com News
carltonware.com news Issue 124 23 January 2007 Novelty Items In the later years Carlton Ware produced quite a number of what is known as Novelty Items!. These usually consisted of copies of everyday items and gimmicky pieces for fun. The most famous and popular is the Walking Ware series. We have written about this in previous issues of this newsletter. In this Shape 3291 - Ice Cream Wafer Butter newsletter we thought we would look at some less known novelty items. Although they were probably produced quite cheaply in abundance for a mass market. The first picture is of shape 3291 which is an Ice Cream Wafer Butter. This was first introduced in Back Stamp the late 1970’s. An interesting replica of an ice-cream and wafer. To complement the ice-cream butter dish Carlton Ware produced 3292, Milk Shake Preserves. Another novelty design is the Alligator Range. This included the following items listed under the shape or impressed number 3543: Teapot, Sugar, Cream, Eggcup, Toast rack, Butter dish, Preserve, Salt and Pepper. It’s obvious that many of the novelty designs were created as utilitarian ware to appeal to a wide audience. Shape 3354 is a very amusing Toastrack with a Bird and Worm - Shape 3543 - Alligator Teapot The early bird gets the worm! Each of the two birds have got a different end of the same worm - which one will succeed in winning the prize? Shape 3353 is a Beaker in this Early Bird range. The handle consists of a bird eating a worm. Two other shapes in the Early Bird range include 3352 Chicken Egg Cups and 3348 Egg Pepper & Salt.
