The Rector Writes

The Real Deal

It seems there is a recurring thread throughout the readings over the past few weeks and that is – if our spirituality is indeed ‘authentic’ it must embrace both the experience of the divine and the call to work in the world. In truth no real impact can be made on the world without a vibrant, empowering relationship with God, and no real relationship with God can be found outside of engagement with the struggles and needs of our world. Being ‘authentic’ means practising what we preach or living out what we believe in real, tangible and practical ways.

To this end I want to share with you the story of ‘Vintage Kitchen Preserves’ (VKP). Vintage Kitchen Preserves is a local Bendigo business which was founded on passion and belief. The founder Sue Gerdsen is committed to looking after the earth and as such has developed a waste not-want not, practice and business to match. She writes, “Don’t expect perfect labels or perfect jars in a row, it’s family and friends who want the world to survive as we now know it and for our grandchildren to enjoy it. It’s that simple”. Vintage Kitchen Preserves is a tad different from lots of producers of preserves, as they live what they believe, using their Nans traditions every day. They salt, rest, soak, use wild ferments or whatever else the old age recipes instruct. They do their very best to never use preservatives or artificial colours and go the All Natural – No Bad-itives road. Sue and her team of helpers are not afraid to jump into the branches of a mulberry tree, fight the thorns (and snakes) for the blackberries that grow on the railway lines, or pick up that fruit, that looks to some, ordinary, and create something magical with it. VKP is about local people, using local produce, foraged fruits from the neighbourhood, recycling what the world already has and utilizing sustainable practices. 1 jar and 1 bag at a time VKP, seeks to make a difference and help our world hang around with its recycling, repurposing and reusing practices. You can look them up on Facebook, drop into see them at the Bendigo Marketplace or visit them at the various local markets. Their produce is out of this world and their ethos and enthusiasm to practice what they believe, to embody their values regarding creation care in their everyday practices is truly commendable and inspiring. In what ways is our beliefs reflected and expressed through our actions?

In the Gospel of Matthew today we see Jesus calls his followers to be as salt and light in the world – allowing our good works to be seen in order that others may praise God. It is when we are salt and light – those who live out in our own lives what we seek to see in the world – that we make a real difference. Salt and light people are those who bring flavour and colour, integrity and insight, healing and compassion into the world by the way they live, love and interact. Their influence is felt not through judgement or legalism, but through a life lived with a completely different quality, that touches others with grace and truth and compassion and calls out to the best in them, leaving them longing to live better lives themselves. This is what it means to let our good deeds be seen so that others will praise God, and it’s the only thing that really brings change into the world. As Gandhi famously said: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

May our worship this week lead us to ‘authentic spirituality’ that we might go out into the world in the power of God’s Spirit to serve the world that God loves.

Yours In Christ, Rev Tracey
