Tip Sheet RSA® Archer™ eGRC Platform v5.x RSA Archer Services

February 2012

What are the functions of the various Archer services, and what is the preferred start and stop order for them?

Archer Services Overview An Archer service is an NT service, a background that is loaded by the of the NT kernel. Such services are often loaded at startup, before any user logs on, and are frequently independent of any specific user being logged on at the time. If the system does not automatically launch a service during startup, the service can be manually launched at the console. Use the NT Control Panel Services applet or another program that interfaces to the NT RSA Archer eGRC Platform Service Control Manager. The following figure shows the list of Archer services in the Service Control Manager.

Once a service is installed, it can be managed by launching Management Console (MMC). MMC enables users to:

l Start, stop, pause, or restart services.

l Change the account under which the service logs on.

l Configure recovery options upon service failure.

l Change the startup type, including Automatic, Manual, and Disabled.

l Automatic. Starts the services at system logon.

l Manual. Starts a service as required or when called from an application (according to definition, but only some of the time in practice, depending on the service).

l Disabled. Completely disables the service and prevents it and its dependencies from running.

Description of Services The following sections provide descriptions of Archer services.

Data Feed Service This service is now a legacy service that currently handles LDAP synchronization.

Queuing Service This service manages change tracking for keyword indexes (leveraged for keyword searching). The Queuing Service processes text data and deposits it into a composite index file on the web server. This index file is then used for keyword searching.

Job Engine This service executes the jobs that are queued using the job framework. Examples of such jobs include notifications, data feeds, and system maintenance. This service polls for jobs in the queue for each instance and prioritizes jobs for execution. The Job Engine schedules and manages data feed imports. The Data Feed Manager automatically inserts applications and their settings into the Archer system, eliminating the need for manual configuration of applications and database support elements. The Data Feed Manager depends on this service to automate the setup and configuration of data feeds.

Configuration Services This service handles requests for information from the configuration database from various Archer products and services. The configuration database stores the settings from the Archer Control Panel. Any product needing access to these settings uses this service to obtain the information.

Recommended Stop and Start Order Use the following sequential order for stopping and starting Archer services:

Stop Order 1. Queuing Service 2. Data Feed Service 3. Job Engine 4. Configuration Service

Start Order 1. Configuration Service 2. Queuing Service 3. Data Feed Service 4. Job Engine
