In the eighth century, John of Damascus composed four homilies in her honor. Saint Anselm, ât the end. of the el-eventh centuryr prayed fer-- vently to Mary. In the twelfth century, Amadeus of Lausanne composed eight honilies in her honor. In all three' Mary has the power to intercede for sins, to grant grace a¡d protec- tion, by her divine maternity to approach very close to God' a¡d. to serve as Queen of Heaven, next in power after her Son. This basic understanding of her power has not changed significantly since the eleventh century. -

AMBROSE AND KARL RAHNER: REFLECTIONS ON THE "VIRGINITAS IN PARTU" JAMES T. O'CONNOR, YONKERS, NY The doctrine which teaches that the Mother of God remained virginally and physi cally integral during the birth of her Son has always been, for some, one of the more perplexing and even "embarrassing" Christian beliefs. Even among Catholic theolo gians, the present century has witnessed efforts to re-interpret or re-read the meaning of the doctrine. The most significant attempt in this regard was the work, in 1952, by the Austrian priest Albert Mitterer who, while maintaining the miraculous nature of Mary's virginity "before, during, and after" the birth of Christ, thought that biologi cal integrity was not to be considered a necessary element of the doctrine and held that the birth process was, in itself (though not in its origins or causes or signifi cance), natural. -

THE CITY OF GOD AND CAESARO-PAPISM A. Nature of Caesaro-Papism Caesaro-papism, etymologically, is the regime in which Caesar would be pope. It particularly designates the Church-state relationship of the later and Christian Roman Empire, especially after it had been based upon Constantinople and largely restricted to the Byzantine or Greek world. Secondarily and less perfectly the Teutonic revival of the Roman Empire in the West would advance similar pretensions, though the unique position of the bishop of Rome would prove a bar to the faithful reproduction in the West of the system of Justinian the Great. In varying degrees, then, Caesaro-papism will be the alternative faced by the Church during the Feudal period to the anarchical tendencies of the age. Imperial protection afforded the Church many advantages in the temporal order: immunities for the clergy from secular tasks, subsidies for the liturgical and charitable works of the Church, protection for missionaries, facilities for communication-to mention but a few of the more obvious. In turn the Church made her contribution by inculcating respect for authority, patriotic loyalty, observance of morality, and promoting imperial unity and cultural homogeneity. But the price paid for this was a high one, since the imperial rulers always tended to make of the Church a department of the state and to make use of ecclesiastical institutions for political purposes. B. THE PHILOSOPHICAL CONCEPTION OF MARIOLOGY AND THE NOTION OF THEOTOKOS IN THE TEACHINGS OF SAINT AMBROSE Angelo Nicolaides Professor (Ethics, Governance and Stakeholder Management), Graduate School of Business Leadership, University of South Africa Key concepts St. Ambrose; Virgin Mary; Mariology; Immaculate Conception; early church ABSTRACT Saint Ambrose (339-397 BCE) was bishop of the Italian city of Milan and was a leading writer in the Western Christian Church during the 4th century. He was an outspoken believer in the notion of Christian female virginity and succeeded in communicating prominent conceptions of God and of the Christian quest for a virtuous life. Central to Ambrose’s teachings is the virginity of Mary and her role as the Theotokos (God bearer/Mother of God). This article discusses the Mariology of Ambrose of Milan, which greatly influenced the thinking of contemporary Popes including Damasus, Siricius and Leo the Great. In uncovering the Mariology of Ambrose, the researcher used various sources and went back to the official Marian pronouncements of Ambrose and also accentuated Scripture within the overall context of both Catholic and Orthodox Church teachings. A historical text-critical analysis was used and understood in terms the historic and socio-cultural context in which Ambrose lived. Biblical hermeneutics was applied to assist in the analysis of the relation between Biblical statements on Mary, Ambrosian writings and the early Church fathers, so as to arrive at a philosophical conception of Mariology and the notion of Theotokos in the teachings of Saint Ambrose.
